would est have been as successful if werner erhard weren't a serenely handsome man?

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 03:47 (nine years ago) link

Well, considering LR Hubb4rd, maybe cult popularity is inversely proportional to the founder's looks.

No one has mentioned the "nest egg" yet.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 November 2014 22:09 (nine years ago) link

I think I did in the Brooks thread.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 November 2014 22:11 (nine years ago) link

No one can mention "nest egg" if they do not understand the concept "nest egg."

Junior Dadaismus (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 14 November 2014 22:12 (nine years ago) link

I was going to say it's my favourite comedy of the past whatever, but I think it's my favourite comedy ever; I'd have to check, but I think I had it #1 in the ILX poll. Throwaway exchange I love:

"Why do you keep speaking to me like I'm a dog?"
"I'll explain later."

Are we allowed to use the words "nest" and "egg" in the same sentence?

nickn, Saturday, 15 November 2014 05:46 (nine years ago) link

btw, WilliamC, there's no need for you to watch Lost In America now, all the jokes are in here.

nickn, Saturday, 15 November 2014 05:52 (nine years ago) link

The core, the heart money, the nest egg.

a stupid red mute juggalo (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 December 2014 00:23 (nine years ago) link

i once had a really odd conversation with my mother about how much she hated Barbara Stanwyck. it was hilarious.

Nhex, Friday, 5 December 2014 22:02 (nine years ago) link

Almost feel bad for your mom.

Cutset Creator (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 5 December 2014 22:03 (nine years ago) link

But if you were to recount hilarious conversation it might cheer me up.

Cutset Creator (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 5 December 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link

I wish I could accurately relay it, but it wasn't so much the words as the pure, unexpected, primal disgust in her face when I mentioned how much I loved Stanwyck, as she simply muttered "I don't like her. I never did." It totally came out of nowhere.

Nhex, Friday, 5 December 2014 22:34 (nine years ago) link

Some of these have been/probably will/not/ be on tcm, but mainly it's a big free stash---suppressed yet supposedly uncut Kubrick etc:

Are you going to watch Mon Oncle D'Amerique?

Pigbag Wanderer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 03:15 (nine years ago) link

Hey, it is categorized as a Comedy.

Pigbag Wanderer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 03:15 (nine years ago) link

it is one.

(Saw it a few weeks ago for the first time in 34 years, on a library VHS)

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 03:44 (nine years ago) link

^^The New Yorker DVD is VHS quality. The film is as serious as one can be with an extended fight scene between two guys in mouse suits inside its running time.

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 04:26 (nine years ago) link

it might be resnais's strangest film, and that is /really/ saying something.

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 14:12 (nine years ago) link

Haven't watched in 20 some odd years myself so recorded this morning. Will keep an eye out for teh comedy.
