I hate the "it's complicated" relationship status. Relationships are confusing anyway, facebook doesn't need to add to anxiety-inducing ambiguity!

i don't know anyone obsessed with it, though. thank heavens.

Does the opposing partner's status change to "Married to someone who thinks it's complicated" ?

i have learned about two new forms of manipulation using facebook in the last week! one of my friends put that she was married to a boyfriend she wasn't serious about so that it wouldn't scare off possibly interested guys looking at her profile, who would think it was a joke. another used facebook to stalk and then get in touch with someone from catholicmatch.com, which doesn't give you contact information unless you pay, and now has a possible catholic boyfriend (as long as he doesn't decide the priesthood is his vocation). it's hilarious, i love it.

Have people seen the latest features of facebook? They're terrifying. They tell you everything that your friends have done. Nothing gets by them. Before, it was a little creepy, and easy for stalkers to use. Now, it does your stalking for you. This is not right.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 03:13 (seventeen years ago) link

It records every change in favorite movie, relationship status, events attended, everything in your friends' profiles, and then informs you on the facebook front page. When it tells you of a relationship ending, it adds a little broken heart symbol.

everyone in my office today was talking about how creepy facebook suddenly was! it sucks because i'm the kind of dork who constantly makes pointless minor changes to his profile.

This is great! Folks like me who are comfortable with others knowing a little about my life won't mind the changes, and the more secretive types will be forced to grow up and stop minding what everyone thinks!

That sentence contains an unhealthy amount of ad hominem bile. Untrue ad hominem bile, moreover. Pfft, I suppose I'd better get used to it.

Facebook's early history is pretty snobby and reflects the fact that it was started by a Harvard kid. The schools were added pretty much in order of prestige. No doubt the public school kids just weren't mature enough to deal with such technology until much later.

It spread this summer beyond Trinity in Ireland. And resulted in much "Oh no! PLebs!" type comments.
Bebo is more popular here for the reason that you can find your old school friends and facebook wasn't available to anyone with anything less than an (a)tcd.ie address. Radio stations, music things etc have bebo pages rather than MySpace, which seemed a bit odd to me. I committed beboicide a while back. Considering commiting Facebookicide.

That said it's been handy for me, esp now that people I know are scattered to the winds, to toronto and cambridge and london and shit. There's no option for saying you're a drop out though..

The new changes are horrible. I mean it was a bit weird before that you could check who's profile had changed, go see and not notice or realise what had changed. But this is odd. It should be possible to disable it.

Anyway, more worrying than the new facebook is the number of groups that have sprung up in the past day either praising, slating or being conspicuously ambivalent about the changes. Guys, calm down, it's only an irrelevant Internet database.

So now the concept of waitlisting students has spread to their social networking sites. Beautiful.

I couldn't find an old friend of mine last week searching his name on myspace when it hit me, "______ has always been a bit too conceited and way too social to not have any social e-profile networking thingamajigger...but he wouldn't be on myspace anyway...too popular...doesn't show elite status or isn't some club...if only there was some other sites just like myspace but seemed to be more about distancing yourself from the unwashed masFACEBOOK DOT COM!"

I checked out the site and sure enough I found him. Just goes to show how far mean generalizations about people will get you in life.

okay, this is because i got a group email from the guy who runs the web company that oversees a site i sometimes write for, saying that that website now has a facebook profile and that we should add it, oh, and hey, add him while we're at it, cheers, etc!

so, okay, it's kinda creepy for people not in college/over 30 to be on facebook, right? myspace, sure, 'cause of like, the music/bands, whatever, i don't know, it's unwashed hilarity (what i'm saying is i'm still on myspace, yeah. and the site in question isn't even), but, uh, facebook? i thought it was really just for college kids who want to fuck each other? am i so wrong for doing a spit-take and laughing when i received the above email from mr. internet entrepreneur?

rrrobyn, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:10 (seventeen years ago) link

It isn't just about college kids who want to fuck each other. It's about anybody who wants to fuck college kids.

I just had to create a Facebook profile for work! Their reasoning: "You're one of the more technology-savvy librarians. We should start a staff group! You must join!" Don't they know it's weird? They don't! Sad!

I was tempted to say, in the section where you say how you know each other, that I had slept with every one of my coworkers on Facebook.

I didn't.

You can be my friend, if you like. last name: dahl

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

that kind of temptation wld be too much for. i am having a hard enough time not replying-to-all with something 'comedic' about this email.

i promise not to join facebook
