The question beloved of IRC creepynutfreaks everywhere. But no, *really*, what ARE you wearing?

stevie t, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A dark green crew shirt, navy blue shorts, black sneakers and white sox.

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

David Clulow frameless specs; black short-sleeved shirt from Greenwich Market; coffee-coloured Muji needlecords; white socks (part of my continuing campaign for the fashion rehabilitation thereof - sports socks, yes, are bad... but there's nothing wrong with a nice pair of white socks!); brown leather bowling shoes by Camper; underwear by -erm- Next.

stevie t, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Bad time to ask! I'm home from work today, still wearing what I slept in, which is a bright red fleece pullover (yes, I know it's summer, but we have central air) a pink bra (put on since I got up) and grey drawstring PJ pants. Hair is a ratty pile atop o' head. Have raccoon eyes. Hot chocolate nearby - no stains on clothing as of yet.

Kim, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

plain tan levi's vintange range t-shirt, white drawstring trousers from express, tan and white underwear courtesy of victoria's secret.

marianna, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A navy Adidas t-shirt. Black jeans and white ol' skool Adidas trainers.

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Silver hoop earrings, black short-sleeved turtleneck, black knee- length skirt with white polka dots, my 'posh spice' sandals (Manon has them on too today, the bitch!), red thong and bra. I should be wearing more because I am sick.

Ally, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Fruit of the Loom T (green); pink socks from Hennes (they say "Dreamy Girl"); somewhat battered old black jeans; Yves St Laurent glasses; blue flipflops kicked off somewhere in the office

mark s, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Pair of combats, some velcro cons, an aubergine short sleeve silky shirt and pants.

Pete, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm at work. So a black suit, black shirt, black tie and black shoes. I'm the legalgoth.

Paul Strange, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm wearing my pyjamas (not the pyjamas I had onstage last night, which are my supernice never wear to bed pyjamas) but my I am sick and even though I shower, I refuse to get up pyjamas, which consist of a pair of purple leggings which long ago lost all pretense of elacsticity, and whatever oversize t-shirt is to hand in my top drawer. Which happened to be a blue and grey ringer Strange Fruit shirt with a banana on it.

If only you'd asked last night... I was dressed so very nicely. A tie and everything.

masonic boom, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Amongst other things I'm wearing a pair of baggy beige cords. Except the cord has gone from large swathes of them. What are they then? Please don't say they're chinos or I might cry.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Wasn't strange fruit a label?

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

green pullover w/holes at elbows & various other places. one of those cheap 'western style" shirts w/ the popper things instead of buttons (blue). green t-shirt w/ "Ireland" (never bin there) & a shamrock. skanky blackish levis w/ thick leather belt & heavy buckle w/ masonic insignia. cotton underpants (briefs). woollen long underpants too. 2 pairs socks. glasses. wristwatch. if i had to go outside again (don't have no reason to tho, it's the middle of the night & v. cold) would put back on sneakers (runbird skyliberty), 2-tone (green-brown) leather jacket , black marlboro baseball hat. (all clothes - old, cheap).

duane, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A bluey-grey cotton top from Zara with denimy shoulder patches, a pair of twister jeans and some increasingly knackered Acupuncture grey/black big sole trainers.

Nick, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Anyway, creepynutfreak, why are you asking?

Nick, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Strange Fruit was John Peel's record label. Still is, I believe. Not where we took the name from, but it's still pretty fitting.

Paul Strange, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I cant remember which shops any of my clothes come from. As a rule M & S.

Black shirty-smocky thing, long sleeves, comfy, I like it a lot. Sensible black work trousers, which I think are the cheap ones I had to get urgently back in May. Blue socks I bought at Gatwick last week. Increasingly battered brown leather shoes bought on the circle line walk, so march 24 2001, and that was definitely M & S. Blue/green check boxers which have been chafing me all day and increasing my grumpiness. Grr.

Tom, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Argghh... my Pervy Text boy used to ask me this all the time with particular reference to detailed descriptions of my underwear. Then he would respond with long lists of what he was wearing and which designer it was by. I was briefly excited by his obvious wealth but alas it did not last....

As I am in the office I have on: black miniskirt, pale blue short sleeve top, hoop earrings, black heels. I am having some difficulties as I have binned the usual kitten heels (which are perfect with knee length skirts) in favour of chunky forties style shoes which are much higher and stompier. Blokes in the office: 'oooh, Emma, high heels and a short skirt, who are you trying to impress?'. Pathetic.

Emma, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Your Pervy Text boy was Patrick Bateman, good job on dropping him.

Ally, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

blue billabong t-shirt, black nike trousers, black socks, tan, black and blue trainers with a red swoosh, Boss glasses and red pants, and a lovely brown zip up top that makes me look like a sheep.

White shirt, black trousers, black socks, navy blue pants. I have no idea where they come from except the pants. They're from George (is that Asda?). I think they are quite old. My gran probably bought them.

Ally C, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I predict that this thread will become immense. I've seen this before.

I still haven't gotten dressed by the way. Hair looks even worse.

Kim, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Darnit, I can only post from work, so I will never be wearing interesting clothes. From the top... Emporio Armani glasses with black and tortoiseshell frame, small silver earrings with Rennie Mackintosh design, pink Clinique lipgloss, white short sleeved top from Hennes, skin colour bra by Warners, silver Casio watch, silver ring with heart on it, chunky silver band ring, Bourgeois nail varnish in Rose Candide, skin colour g-string from Marks & Spencer, black trousers from Top Shop, black knee high socks from John Lewis, Black Mary Janes from Shelleys.

Madchen, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah glasses. I'm wearing my glasses. There's nothing to say about them except I'd like a new pair.

Tom, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dude, I left out my glasses and black eyeliner, fuck that shit.

Ally, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nick: I asked the question, cos, well a) I was kind of intrigued by that illustration the Guardian used for their "Brands Issue" the other week (ie people wearing jackets that say "Not yet 36" and trousers that say "money to burn"), so I thought it might open up into kind of conversation about that sort of thing... b) I used to love those Q&A things back in the early issues of i-D that asked random passers-by "what are you wearing and why?"... and c)there are ILE index categories for books, films, tv etc, but not clothes - why not? the Ally/Suzy/Emma conversation on the fashmag thread is/was one of the more interesting threads on the board at the mo'.

stevie t, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As my t-shirt isn't a band or record label one its probably next or BHS. Next boxers (they rule btw). Grey trouser which are now to big cos I've lost weight since I bought them but are well comfy and baggy. I've just kicked off sandals, I have worn shoes only once in over a month and a half.

More importantly have you thought about what you will wear for meeting strange people on saturday, I know I have, I'm not normally this vain so i must be terrified.

Ed, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I omitted my underwear — black, natch — not because it is not there, but because it is not Designer. I have merely forgot the label on my jeans: it was inexpressibly chic, when it still adhered to them.

mark s, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, perhaps I'd better add a 'clothes' category, then.
As for me, black t-shirt, black boxer shorts, blue jeans and black socks. I'm not Mr Style.

DG, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, what are your bestest going out clothes? Whenever I'm out with people the boys seem to wear the same thing they always do so I am intrigued to know if boys actually have special best clothes. I am daft and only ever buy sparkly skimpy things for non-work wear so end up down the pub in a boob tube and lace gloves, to the great embarassment of my mates.

Emma, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah glasses, Cutler and Gross

Ed, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Those are my special best clothes, dammit Emma. Normally it's string vests and potato sacks.

Tom, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

the only clothes I have specifically for going out are my cyberdog tekno trousers. They are good cos you can get a couple of bottles of water in the ockets which are very deep so money and other things don't fall out of them. They did have flashing lights but they ran out of batteries. For other types of club I just wear the better end of my normal clothes.

Ed, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

if i was going out i would put on my jacket, my shoes, my hat. like i already said.

duane, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

(jacket -y'd call it suede. "2 tone leather" sounds like something really gross)

duane, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I have some astonishingly tight metallicy jeans that I never wear to work. I rarely wear them to go out either, because getting anything out of the pockets requires writhing about in a prone position for about half an hour. I also have a nice YSL camel jacket that I never wear because it makes my other clothes look scruffy. And some clubby tops that I never wear because I prefer to stay in listening to Smiths records.

Nick, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Pointy black sigerson morrison slingbacks, banana republic grey cotton skirt and black sleeveless turtleneck (all bought on sale), H+M leopard underwear (not a thong), a pearl ring my stepfather bought in Japan 40 years ago and my mom gave to me last month, and Motu by Comptoir Sud Pacifique. I'm at work and we have a meeting this morning, this is kind of dressed up for me.

Lesley Higgins, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd rather know what people wear around the house and the ratio of dressing gown to jogging slacks wearing contributors to ILE. I love my dressing gown, it's like a poor man's smoking jacket.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I would love a smoking jaket. However round the house I wear a Sarong and a t shirt and add a big white wooly jumper with a black star on it if its cold. I'm still looking for the ultimate sarong, my best ones are purple.

Ed, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I only wear "tighty -whitey "style undies

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't like to think about Nick writhing around in astonishingly tight metallic jeans.

Madchen, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Green/brown lightweight jacket (looks better than it sounds), earth- tone t-shirt, blue jeans. Simple, yet effective. Perhaps.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I am now relieved that male friends stick to the jeans or combats / t- shirt combo when out as tight spangly pants (US) would be quite terrifying.

Me and Pete do dressing gowns around the house. In fact on Monday our guests turned up at 9:30 to watch BB and there we were resplendent in them. Pete's is scary as it is short and keeps falling open. Mine is grey and fleecy although I have a Confessions of a Milkman style job too which is see thru black chiffon with ostrich feather trim. I have not got to wear it for ages, sadly.

Emma, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ok, now I'm wearing a tiger print thong (with extra spangles), a Gautier bra, a fright wig, Rob't Smith red lipstick, toenails in Electric Salmon, brass knuckles, a stripey stovepipe hat, Spock Ears, vampire teeth, and thigh high KISS boots.

Ok, I'm lying. Still in my PJs. The Electric Salmon toenails are for real tho.

Kim, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dressing gown in the morning (obviously on A weekend this stretches long into the afternoon)

Jogging bottoms or drawstring trousers and old t-shirt for mooching round the house, definitely no slippers.

Forgot aftershave - Hugo Boss and jewellery - silver ring on first finger left hand, gold signet ring (not nice but was present from Dad) silver and green watch and a silver bracelet from Bali

Going out clothes...oh yeah, a good trick is that if your female friends say they like an item of clothing, it's pretty safe that other girls will too ;-)

cabbage, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It will astonish all to learn that I have complicated rules re appropriate clothing.
In particular, buttons = rubbish and visible buttons = evil. It is the 21st Century. Please Catch Up.
All shades of brown = unacceptable. Primary colours are good, pastels are wanks.
Umbrellas? No, of course not. If it rains (see me for defn here: water falling from sky = not good enough) and you see fit to produce one, yes, I will walk with you — because I am no fanatic — but not *beside* you, obviously.
Most shoes, expensive or cheap, men's or women's, are QUITE AMAZINGLY UGLY.

mark s, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't like to think about Nick writhing around in astonishingly tight metallic jeans.

But you can't stop doing it, can you. CAN YOU??

Mark.S - is your buttons stance purely borne of progressive ideology, or do you have a FEAR OF BUTTONS. It's quite a common phobia, apparently. My sister's ex-boyfriend used to have it. Her current one is, I discovered this weekend, freaked out by touching flour. Honestly, my sister and her freaky men. Why can't she choose a normal, psychotic boyfriend like everyone else?

Nick, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hmmm, with a shoe fetish or something? Mark's hatred of shoes makes me think he has a foot fetish. Which I find weirder than a shoe fetish.
