No way, I like the "duster" types of housecoats, mostly vintage ones, that have patch pockets and zip down the front. I have a few, they all look like derranged picnic-table cloths with appliques. YES JUST LIKE THAT but mine are sleeveless.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:16 (eighteen years ago) link

i am wearing a robe right now, because i am unemployed and LAZY.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:17 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm unemployed & just posted a pickle on the other thread about it.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah yes, that (Laurel's) sounds more like the platonic housecoat I have in mind when I hear the word. But are you really naked underneath those?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I dunno about anyone else, but I am.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:18 (eighteen years ago) link

It's perfect for that time right after you get home from work and you want to rip your uncomfortable clothes off but aren't really ready to walk around totally buck naked. It's a compromise. Comfort AND modesty. And thinly-veiled nudity. And they don't constantly come open in the front.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Just to bring this over from the last thread and then I'm done...

Man, I ain't going to argue about this either. But no, I don't think Laurel is part of a cabal. But she did say: "Jay, if I ever get ops I'll always unban you. Of course Jon already knows that, and once he figures it out he'll un-op for me eternity" -- and that says to me that there are a few dudes who rule that board, and "allow" others to post there.

And now I will post a picture of a robe like mine

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:18 (eighteen years ago) link

What is "ops" short for? I assume she means "admin privileges."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:19 (eighteen years ago) link

That IS a dilly of a pickle, btw. Don't tell them you lied.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Can we please stop? xp

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't ask what "ops" means?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:22 (eighteen years ago) link

what would i say then? do i keep up the lie?!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not a big fan of the tie-front robes for MYSELF, too inconvenient with the always-coming-untied. But I've got no objections to them on anyone else....

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Kelsey--do not tell them you lied.

xpost--yes, continue to lie. It is best.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

on the theme of robes & off the theme of me being a lying, manipulative ass-wipe: i just found out that my robe is called a 'yukata.' it's a cotton japanese robe/kimono thing. it has batiked fish on it.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I think you should be as vague as possible when talking about the family emergency. It all sort of depends on the possibility of getting another job of this nature. If that's very possible, then go to China. If that's highly unlikely and you will probably find yourself at the Gap, I would think again about the trip.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Kelsey it is also important to remember that this is a temp agency, and they will lie, cheat, and steal to get you on the job because that makes them money. This happened to me more than once.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

(xp) haha.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

By that I mean entirely misrepresent the type of work I would be doing, and the chances of permanent employment. xpost

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a Tommy Hilfiger robe that I found (in brand new condition) in a vacated apt. I was cleaning one summer when I was a cleaning lady. I've had it for a good 6 years.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a housedress that I wear around the house. It's not like a typical housecoat, it's just an old, floppy dress that is comfortable enough for me to forget that it's on OR to take the dogs out if I have to. It's blue with big white polka dots. Sometimes I wear it to work and no one knows it's my housedress. HAHAHHA SUCKAS.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, lying to TEMP employers is totally fair game.

Or, in my case, to permanent employers.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

She's had the robe for a good six years.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, "ops" is chat-speak from mIRC days. "Privs" would be better.

Oi for pete's sake, there is no "ruling" and no "allowing". I don't care enough to fight about most things by the unofficial rules of the arena ie the insulting and the making up jokes about each other and the other, like, boy-social stuff & pretend dick-waving, so if I wanted to out on a limb on the NB I would have to find my own ways to exercise status/credibility/whatever. So far when I have gotten honstly upset about anything there and spoken to other posters individually, adjustments have been made so that everyone stays cool with each other, which I appreciate! It just has its own weird conventions. AND I AM DONE. Sorry this is a huge XP.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:31 (eighteen years ago) link

i have two yukatas. i'd forgotten the name...i always call them my kimonos. i had a really hard time finding a place that sold them online.

amanda sounds sensible with her advice...

xp i hate dialup. amanda that dress sounds great. i am always in search of comfy loungey stuff to wear.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm done with you guys, anyway.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Speaking of lying:

i put my phone through the laundry about a week ago, and want to get a new one under the warranty. The screen looks fine, text messaging still works, ditto the buttons, but voice calls only last 8 secs and the microphone doesn't work.

What should I tell the people at the Sprint store??? That it just stopped working?

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

2x yes.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you have the protection plan? If so, then it doesn't matter at all what you tell them happened.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, ok.

xp no protection plan, just warranty.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

In that case lie. And probably pay for a new phone, in my experience. I learned the hard way and therefore have the protection plan.

There is a pH-strip thing in the phone that turns pink when there is water damage. Just hope they don't check that or don't care.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:41 (eighteen years ago) link

gulp. i just did it. i called her back & gave the whole story. i can't believe myself. i couldn't turn back, though.
but, she did ask me how possible it would be for me to take two weeks off & then come back & i told her it was possible. it's nice to feel so wanted for a job & if this place ends up wanting me & i end up going & loving it a whole lot, i suppose the right job could convince me to refund my ticket in the name of financial stability.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm totally squirming. sorely, actually. i worked out yesterday & i need to gingerly sit myself upon the toilet seat b/c of the soreness. have you ever had those days?! it's been awhile for me.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 17:01 (eighteen years ago) link

I feel like my body shape approximates an album cover by Tara Jane O'Neil, minus the boob sagging...

Huh. I think that body looks very normal, if a little sad. Also, not quite right with the feet.

I just missed her when I moved up here . . . last time I saw her (empty bottle) I totally talked to her after & asked if she'd want to do an art trade. she was game, but i never went through with it. i was too fucking nervous or something.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I think that one time, TJO got Kevin in a headlock and then made him punch himself in the face, the whole while saying, "Why are you hitting yourself? Huh? Stop hitting yourself!"

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Expand on this, please.

it was a song on the b-side of sebadoh's "skull" 7" from 94(?). it was basically a mash note written by jason lowenstein to tara jane o'neill. i'm guessing they used to be an item or something, that would explain her playing drums on a couple of jake's tracks on the bakesale album.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:56 (eighteen years ago) link

She did have an album called TJO TKO.

Also: I thought she liked the ladies.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes she was. Reckless still files her stuff under RODAN, even though they only put out one album 12 years ago and she's done like four solo albums and four Retsin albums.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I found out the other day that my (pretty much) most-pretentious-indie- art-snob friend had never listened to Archers of Loaf. OH THE HUMANITY

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I say that only because I don't think that that's what brings us together normally, and yet there it is. (Although I guess a fair number of us found ILX via ILM.)

Wha? No Archers of Loaf? Lame. I had a funny realization recently when it dawned on me that when I saw them in 94 they were probably all like 23 or so. I thought they were all adult and I was a child, but boy was I wrong. They WOULD have given me the time of day. Maybe.
