I went to my first and only ST convention in spring 1988, right as she got capped.

I remember they were showing all this promo shit for these movies called "Willow" and "Moontrap"

kingfish, Thursday, 4 June 2009 20:57 (fourteen years ago) link

lol you went to a convention

god how good was this?
all the people who liked the neo-batman films but thought them too dark for popcorn type movies (which seemed to be a lot of people) should see this.
oddly though this was bloodier than the batman films.

uhura didn't 'cop off' with spock in the tv version did she?

god i so hope they don't 're-boot' the new generataion.. boooring!

three months pass...

As for the next one:

Abrams spoke about the general creative imperatives for the story while Orci hinted that we might be seeing clear metaphors for modern geo-political concerns in the story about ongoing mission of the Starship Enterprise. First, here's what Abrams told me:

"The ambition for a sequel to 'Star Trek' is to make a movie that's worthy of the audience and not just another movie, you know, just a second movie that feels tacked on. The first movie was so concerned with just setting up the characters -- their meeting each and galvanizing that family -- that in many ways a sequel will have a very different mission. it needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving story. There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn't mean it should be pretentious. If there are simple truths -- truths connected to what we live -- that elevates any story -- that's true with any story."

Here's what Orci had to say:

"We’ve literally had two meetings now. We haven’t decided anything but we’re starting to circle around some ideas. We got a lot of fan response from the first one and a considerable amount of critical response and one of the things we heard was, ‘Make sure the next one deals with modern-day issues.’ We’re trying to keep it as up-to-date and as reflective of what’s going on today as possible. So that’s one thing, to make it reflect the things that we are all dealing with today.

I asked Orci somewhat flippantly if that meant we might see Starfleet grappling with the ethics of torture or dealing with a rising terrorist threat or perhaps a painful, politicized war with the Klingons.

"Well yeah, those are the kind of issues we're talking about. Wow, you're good! But seriously that's the way we're thinking, that's an approach. So if you have any ideas ... "

And this is all meant to be a surprise how?

Looking forward to the sequel consisting of Scotty introducing healthcare to little dude Keenser's home planet whilst the Federation demands to see Spock's true birth certificate.

not a star trek dude really, but finally saw this and it was AWESOME. pacing reminded me of indiana jones (pre crystal skull abomination). so FUN, they should make more action movies like this.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 22 January 2010 06:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I only saw it recently so I missed whatever arguments hay have happened in this thread, but I remain kind of dumbfounded both by the idea that this movie was interesting or necessary or that it was executed well. I mean, the orig ST characters with new actors seems kind of pointless and is only being done because creating new characters within that universe stopped working for the franchise, but it wasn't even some cool stylish Casino Royale-style reboot, it was just a super generic new school sci-fi movie with some familiar names and premises plugged into it.

the Delta Vega thing seemed like a huge plot hole to me: Nero & co leave Spock on the planet and tell him they're going to destroy Vulcan, so why does Spock just hang around in the cave when he knows exactly where the outpost is and how to get off the planet? Wouldn't his first instinct to be to get to the outpost and warn the people of Vulcan? I have yet to hear an explanation that completely explains what was going on there.

I did actually like this movie.

I thought the point of that was that, aside from a research outpost that no one ever actually talked to, no one ever went to Delta Vega or was in contact with it and the only reason they were able to get off of it was because the Enterprise happened to be in the area and they convinced Scotty to try to remtely hack into its transporter system. It's also a little unclear to me how long Spock has actually been on Delta Vega but that's mostly because I saw the movie once 6 months ago and don't remember if they addressed it.

It was more like "I Am Legend" with everything interesting/sympathetic replaced with a gigantic asshole and a stick of wood.

Vajazzle My Nazzle (HI DERE), Friday, 22 January 2010 19:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, you can lambaste "I Am Legend" for going for cheap sentiment but I would rather watch Will Smith realistically interact with a dog than watch Christian Bale act like an irredeemable cock.

Quinto got Spock all wrong imo. I was sort of into the movie until real Spock showed up, then I realized how lame all these characters were compared to the classic ones, and just spent the rest of the movie being sad that the originals were too old to do any more movies. I'm not even close to being a Trekkie either.

Always, always read this as Young Kirk in Spock

Good film tho! Captures the more freewheeling attitude of the series, and the best parts of the first two or three movies.

DavidM, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:41 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah Spock in the movie was too bitchy, I know it was young Spock reconciling his human and vulcan sides, learning to keep emotions in check, but it was still weird.

did they actually tell him they were going to destroy vulcan? i don't remember that. also, maybe he was just staying out of the way as to not influence the past?

I'm FINNISH!!!! (s1ocki), Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure that's exactly why they put him there and they told him he would have to watch his planet suffer. And it seems inconsistent that he's watch his home planet implode while he helps Kirk and Scotty get back on the Enterprise, since Vulcan was always around in the first "reality".

I would recommend the blu-ray for anyone who has the setup and likes the movie...It looks incredible and has tons of features. There's a little doc on Nimoy playing Spock for presumably the last time that turns out to be fairly moving. The man himself is in tears as he completes his final scene.

it's because the whole movie is set in an alternate timeline!

manichean ramen (latebloomer), Saturday, 23 January 2010 03:57 (fourteen years ago) link

here's the quote from Spock in the film:

"Nero spared my life for one reason: so that i would know his pain. he beamed me here so i could observe his vengeance."

I figure that means that Nero told him, but let's say he didn't; that still doesn't explain why Spock would stay on the planet when he knows where the outpost is.

ok thanks i couldn't remember exact details of the movie!

Basically the Romulans changed everything by going through the black hole and killing off Kirk's dad, so now everything is slightly different.

that's kinda my point....it's not of a piece with the rest of the series, it's just another 'pretty people in peril' JJ Abrams sci-fi soap opera with ST characters and a bunch of fan service references plugged in.
