I think I'd be Louise of the famed dyke bar all the insiders hung out at. Sit and scowl at the kids with Francis Bacon.

Arthur, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Or maybe that hot dog vendor from the Bromley Contingent, he was awful cute.

Arthur, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'd be Mrs Lydon's budgie.

Nancy Drew, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i am SUE CATWOMAN!! i am strikingly beautiful and all desire me — but WHERE AM I TODAY?!?

mark s, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hopefully, someone would cast me as Animal from the Anti-Nowhere League

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Caroline Coon of Melody Maker - more of an observer.

Anna, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't know anything about 76/77 english punk. John Lennon? Terry Wogan?

Ronan, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

A confusing question to me because I was actually there at the time. So I'd be me again...a diffident young punk saving up for my first drum kit...

David Inglesfield, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'd be (a) Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, with those squeeky keyboards, silly lyrics (with equally silly sociopolitical theorizing), and cheesy costumes; or (b) Jerry Harrison.

Whatever I'd be, I'd be sotto voce on my love for the music of Zappa and Sabbath, whilst somehow trying to shoehorn either of the two into the newly-emerging musical scheme of things.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Poly Styrene. [One Thread] Up Yours!

felicity, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Id have to be a Canadian so since no ones mentioned Art Bergman. I'll share his alcohol abuse.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dave Vanian. I'd invent goth without trying and laugh my head off at all the suckers who forgot the sense of humor part later. *And* I'd still be a suave bastard 25 years after the fact.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

an embryonic (not literally of course) mark e. smith.

this might happen. (but not in ten thousand years-ah.), Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Siouxsie, obviously. Ned, you *do* know that Mr Dave Vanian once drank tea made with Lydia Lunch's used Tampax, don't you?

suzy, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Howard Devoto. I wish.

DG, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No-one. I'd be down the disco having F!U!N!

DavidM, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'd be Alice Cooper!! Wahhoooooooo!!!

jel, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Coz you know, I think I woulda been into classic rock if I'd been around at the time.

jel, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But Suzy, why am I not surprised?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'd like to be Ari Up, but I'd probably be Jimmy Pursey.

dave q, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Actually, Dave, if you were Grundy, what would *you* have done during That There Interview?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

DAVE FORMULA

Norman Phay, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Can't decide between Howard Devoto or Jon Anderson.

Damian, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jah Wobble. Cos of the tube driving.

RickyT, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jah Wobble was very rude to me on the london underground once.

Norman Phay, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Why?

RickyT, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Because the ticket I had had the previous day's date printed on it. It was when he was working there - I didn't know it was him @ the time, but later on, I saw a pic in some musick rag or other where there was a pic of him, and it said he worked on the U/G. He was pretty obnoxious, and I was only saved by this big old black guy, who told him to leave me alone. He told me that it was impossible for a tix0ret machine to print the wrong date, but IT DID!!!! I was only down in London for that one day, so obv I couldn't have reused one from thee previous day, and I certainly *did* buy one - he accused me of picking up an old ticket, but it seemed to me that all the old tickets would have been handed in at the gate, and I said this to him. It's hard to Xplain just how threatening, nasty & overbearing his manner was. However, I still like a lot of his records, so WTF.....

Norman Phay, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i dont know, patti smith maybe

anthony, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

rosemary, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

...Mr Dave Vanian once drank tea made with Lydia Lunch's used Tampax....

Didn't GG Allen have a thing for used tampax as well? Oh, and poo. And wee. And drumsticks....

Al, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Mr. Genesis P. Orridge, in his Throbbing Gristle days, also had a thing for used tampons. And used diapers (yuck!).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i would be pete shelley.

di, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

A cross between Vic Godard (still around and doing stuff) and Gaye Advert (still looking good in her 40's)!!

Dr. C, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I discovered the other week that I work with someone who used to be in a precursor of Generation X with Billy Idol!

Dr. C, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I discovered the other week that I work with someone who used to be in a precursor of Generation X with Billy Idol!

Do you mean Chelsea (mind you that was the same line up as Gen X but with Gene October as well)? So who is it? I know someone who was in a band with BI at Sussex University.

David Inglesfield, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

still one of the only things to make me squeamish (for reasons i cant quite figure...ilx shrinks to thread pleez) was a story of an old skool coum transmissions performance where mssr. p'orridge drew a syringe full of blood out of his scrotum and re-injected it into his arm. it's not -that- creepy (kodanshi's certainly posted worse to ilx) but it does unnerve me for some reason.

jess, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I wonder whether Idol was always as much of a dickhead as he appeared at the time of "Hot In The City", "White Wedding" et al? I have to say he seemed so when I saw an old Gen X performance on TOTP2 a while back.

Oh, and I'd be Howard Devoto, because I came from nowhere and I'm going straight back there.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You'd never know that Dr C was an old punk, would you? Gaye Advert indeed...
Sue Catwoman popped up on some ITV punk documentary a couple of years ago, looking rather old, and if I remember right she fell foul of smack and ended up a prostitute for a while. Though I might be getting her mixed up with someone else.

DG, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'd be Marc Bolan.

Sean, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tch, you all want to be Devoto, eh? I'm going to a preview for 24 Hour Party People tomorrow, where Howard has a cameo as the Haçienda's cleaner. Should be interesting...

suzy, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You must tell all once you've seen it before I drag LC off to see it and spend the evening ranting about how WRONG WROMNG WRONG it is...or is it?

DG, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well, points in its favour include the full cooperation of everyone involved in Manc scene. I won't pass judgement on the Coog as Tony Wilson until after the fact.

suzy, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Who plays Vini Reilly is what I want to know.

Sean as Marc Bolan...hanging around with all the sweet young punk rock things...yes, that works. ;-) But surely you don't want to end up running into a tree?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That's what I thought as well. Surely Sean doesn't wish he hadn't outlived the Year Of Punk?

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

David - I reckon we know the same person, because he told me that he was at Sussex Univ too. And he mentioned Gene October.

His name is Steve Upstone. I've worked with him for 10+ years and only found this out last month.

Dr. C, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i'd be either Dennis Bovell, Epic Soundtracks, or all of Kleenex. i'd say Pete Shelley but someone else already took him, so i couldn't possibly... if i were american i'd probably be Jad Fair, though that'd be around '79-'80...

i've noticed a lot of answers, mine included, started leaning towards post-punk... which is much more exciting anyway.

good thread, this one.

mike j, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Who plays Vini Reilly is what I want to know.

Not The Pinefox, apparently. Therefore, entire project = worthless.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

His name is Steve Upstone.

Not the person I know, but he must have been in the same band as the person I know (Rob Harper - who later joined The Clash as drummer, after Terry Chimes...before Topper Headon).

David Inglesfield, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hey, I want to be Vini Reilly

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ian Curtis.

I was going to say that I should be Poly Styrene seeing as I've got pilot goggles, but having thought about it (and googled) I can't find any evidence that she did wear any herself. Surely I'm not just mad? Does anyone remember if she did?

emil.y, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well, points in its favour include the full cooperation of everyone involved in Manc scene.

Well we both know ONE angry punk dyke — w.her own fac number no less — that that ain't so of, suzy!!

Andy Gill?

David - there's a website with photos of the pre-Gen X/Chelsea folks on it. I'll check it out.

No, I'd want to be Linton Kwesi Johnson.

It really pays to actually read closely the thread header. Esp. since neither of Messrs. Mothersbaugh or Harrison are Brits.

I'll pick either Jon King or Pete Shelley. Covers the same ground as Mothersbaugh/Harrison though on different turf (I think?)

David - this is the link. (http://www.billyidol.com/Rockettes.html). The band was called the Rockettes - no mention of Rob Harper, but I'll ask him.

The bloke at the next desk to me used to be in the Frantic Elevators, and now plays in a band with Idol's old mate. They play stuff like Cray/Clapton/John Martyn etc, so not of interest. I'm the only true punXOR round here!

Dr. C, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I be Derek Bailey coz hes the BOSS the DON he be hipper than all that punk shit an he aint never changed never sold out for the benjamins and he be hip forevah he be hippest fuckah in '77 as he be now DB RULES YOU FAGGOT PARKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David - this is the link. (http://www.billyidol.com/Rockettes.html). The band was called the Rockettes - no mention of Rob Harper, but I'll ask him.

Delving deep into trivia now. I'm almost certain that that's Rob Harper's white Premier drum kit with 'customised' bendy cymbal stands that he still had when I first met him. But it's somebody else actually playing the drums in the photos.

five months pass...
I don't know her name... In "The Filth & the Fury", there's a blonde girl in what appears to be a black rubber dress, dancing on the stage & holding a pint. She looks likes she's having so much fun!
