I want to quit smoking. Before I quit completely, but then getting a job at a restaurant, I started again. It was mostly a social thing, going outside to socialize and smoke with everyone. That turned into smoking when I'm drinking. And that pretty much turned into being a full on smoker. So, I want to stop that.

2005 was the year of my breaking up with my fiance and a lot of other tragic shit that resulted in a pretty terrible year. Hopefully 2006 will be the year I get another girlfriend, or at least date more. My love life was pretty stagnant this past year. I did a fine job of asking out some hot girl from Belarus the other night, and even though nothing came of it, it was a step up from being too shy to not bother.

So, what do you want to change this year?

I want to get back to my swimming routine which I had to end due to a shoulder injury which is now fixed, hurrah.

I'm hoping to lose ten-fifteen lb. by the end of the year. If my health allows me to be as active as I'd like to be, that should be pretty doable. If not, I might still be able to get there by eating more carefully.

I'd love to get into a different line of work, but I have no escape plan, and can't seem to come up with one.

i'm very skeptical of my ability to accomplish even one or two of those

Oh, I have some ideas...

Also I have to move to another apartment. The thin walls in this place are just freaking me out too much now. I really don't look forward to either apartment hunting or moving, or the ienvitable final realization that I have moved into yet another hell-hole, no matter how ostensibly posh.

Thanks. :)

I'm not sure yet. I had been thinking IT but am now thinking that may not be the best path for me. I think I'm going to take some programming courses at the community college for the hell of it, see how it takes.

Most likely I'll go for a masters in social work with an aim towards counseling/therapy. That's what I've planned for years but had put it out of mind after my bad turn with teaching. I suspect that it would make me happier in the long-run than computer programming would.

Write a novel, make money, not let money make me, get a flat, own more idiots/avoid pathetic, insecure, self-absorbed losers at dodgy house parties, produce more artwork, get the driving licence, rejoin a gym, stick with those who matter, visit Tokyo, Stockholm and/or NYC, and spend valuable time with the new fancy.

my master's is in urban planning (or "city & regional planning," as a lot of schools are calling it now). the last two applications are going out tomorrow.

1. Sell a lot of copies of my book
2. Sell lots of banner ads for lube, poppers, and buttplugs.
3. Go on a date.
4. Cut down on drugs.

Those are my four goals for 2006.

I'd like to start playing guitar again. I'd slowly gotten away from it last summer to the point where I haven't picked one up in a couple of months. I thought maybe a change was in order so I sold my old reliable and bought a new Taylor that just sits waiting for me to breathe a little life into it. I really miss those daily sessions that gave me much more confidence in myself to do a whole lot more than just play an instrument.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 2 January 2006 04:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, I wrote this sort of trashy book about when I lived in that model dorm. An imprint of Simn & Schuster bought it a couple weeks ago, so I guess it'll come out winter of 2006.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 2 January 2006 04:15 (eighteen years ago) link

trashy in a good way, of course.

I am impressed, by news of Philip's book.

I want to read Mary McCarthy's The Group at last.

How long have I wanted to read it, you ask?

Stay with girlfriend (3 months so far)
Make inroads into my overdraft
Make progress with the music writing - did my first ever interview (of Andrew from Broken Social Scene) the other week.
Buy lots of CDs (possible conflict of interests with #2 there...)
Move out of parents' place - this should happen v soon.
