I never understood why they have to put a picture of the device on the screen of the device with that frowny face. Why not just make the mac/ipod screen just have a goddamned frown on it? It's just as informative. Drawing another ipod on the screen of an ipod is fucking redundant! Why! Why! Stupid people. Everywhere.

I took mine to the gym for the first time today and dropped it while I was on the treadmill — off the back it went, zip clunk. And I stopped walking, looked back between my legs, and off the treadmill I went, zip thud. And I said "fuck" in front of all those nice old people trying to keep from having a second heart attack.

truck-patch pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 1 January 2006 02:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Mine died a month or so back, served as a paperweight for a the remainder of its too-short life and then it was stolen from my desk at work (which would have taken a serious archaeological dig to unearth it, actually). It'll cost whoever stole it more to repair than if they'd actually gone out and bought one, so that's some consolation.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Sunday, 1 January 2006 02:16 (eighteen years ago) link

One good thing about using minidisc players instead is they now cost only about 80$. I must say though the video ipod is quite royal - porn to go!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Sunday, 1 January 2006 19:54 (eighteen years ago) link

This is why you get a store-based warranty for at least a year or two when you buy an iPod... physical damage to an iPod that doesn't show any surface damage can be replaced at that store for a new and updated version of your iPod for nothing -- no "Apple Care" hassles or anything! Granted, you have to buy a new warranty, but that's around, what, $50 compared to $500?

Dom iNut (donut), Sunday, 1 January 2006 20:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I've had to do this twice... (no toilets were involved, but same after effects.. the stories weren't nearly as exciting )

Dom iNut (donut), Sunday, 1 January 2006 20:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, your reason for product defect has to be something like "well, the hard disc just stopped.. working.. i don't know why." Dishonesty is imperative!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 1 January 2006 21:19 (eighteen years ago) link

i was about to say, just wait for it to dry out and it will probably work again. I know this from throwing cell phones into creeks and pouring beer down the back of tvs. wait a day and they will dry out. GOOD AS NEW!

my ipod rolled off a treadmill the other day too, but since it had a cover it was fine.

ShawShank Rambo Connection (Carey), Sunday, 1 January 2006 21:29 (eighteen years ago) link

well, it turns on. then it froze. so i'm not sure what the deal is.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 1 January 2006 21:46 (eighteen years ago) link

A couple of years ago I dropped my mobile phone into a pint glass of water, partly out of curiosity, partly because I didn't think about what I was doing. It switched off immediately, obviously, but after a night in the airing cupboard it worked again good as new!

I've been told it's turning it on whilst wet that's the real killer, so best let it dry out some more before you try and turn it on again. Have you tried full reboots and all that now it's turning on?

Mine has just stopped turning on now, or freezing at the Apple screen. I occasionally get the sad ipod face but nothing more.

To my knowledge, it hasn't been dropped or had water poured on it or anything. Any tips on trying to resurrect it?

My replacement iPod has now started arbitrarily pausing during songs, even when the hold switch is on. This doesn't ever seem to happen when its sitting still, weirdly, but I've no idea why this could be.

Happened to anyone else?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 4 March 2006 13:50 (eighteen years ago) link

happened to me when it didnt like the headphones (or headphone jack, really) i was using - it thought they were disconnected, and would auto-pause. maybe this is what's happening to you?

Mac can't make hardware. Be thee warned forever

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Saturday, 4 March 2006 16:14 (eighteen years ago) link

A Mac is hardware! I think you mean Apple. And yeah, it's the headphones that likely have a short somewhere or (more likely) the connector isn't making contact correctly. The newer iPods pause when you pull out the headphones. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to turn off that feature.

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 4 March 2006 21:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought my ipod had gremlins, because it kept turning on and playing the same song while it was switched off and locked. It would do it every day, and it was really annoying me, running the battery down.

It took me a MONTH to realise that I had accidentally put the alarm clock on.

I think that I somehow electrocuted my iPod. I was plugging it into the charger, all the lights flashed a couple of times, and then ... silence. No sound, no display, no nothing.

I'm a little scared of all those Uncle Tupelo songs shooting around the circuitry of my house ala Shocker.

Anyway. It's dead. No Mr. Nice Guy.

a great big turk running amok with a machete (kenan), Monday, 3 July 2006 09:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, that's the problem -- you can't get into ipod preferences until your ipod is attached, so if it syncs, it's too late by then.

my ipod keeps freezing. i know abt the things i can do to try and fix it, it is just sad.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 3 July 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

jeffrey - if it's still under warranty, you can send it in and you won't get charged for repair or replacement.

my ipod died this morning (sad face, completely unresponsive to everything). then i left for work, and when i got back, it was completely normal. i'm nervous because the warranty's only good for 24 more days, and if going to break shortly i hope it makes up its mind quickly.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 00:40 (seventeen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
My ipod (3rd Gen, I think 40GB monochrome) is giving me a world or pain. It froze and emitted a clicking sound continually. Resetting gave the 'sad ipod' icon. Every attempt to power up resulted in more clicking or whirring followed by the sad ipod icon or the folder icon. I-tunes or the updater wouldn't recognize it. I partly fixed it by banging it quite hard on my knee which I assume freed up the hard disk head or whatever was clicking. It worked fine for an hour or so and then started track skipping and clicking again. I-tunes reported an error with the disk that required restoring back to factory settings, so I did this. I also downloaded the latest versions of itunes and ipod software.

Now THIS is the problem : I can happily upload tracks from my library onto the restored/cleaned hard drive until I get to just over 5000 tracks (about 18GB). When I go further, the upload freezes and eventually I get a 'writing to drive K' error (K is the drive name my PC has assigned to the ipod). Then when I disconnect from the computer, there's a high chance that ALL of the music has disappeared from the ipod and you have to repeat the restore/upload cycle again. I think I did it 3 times before I noticed that it was crashing at roughly the same place every time.

So my ipod is working at roughly half capacity, which I'm pissed off about. Any ideas what's wrong - is half of the hard drive corrupt? If so, why doesn't restoring sort this out? Anyone else seen this?

I have looked at ipodlounge and the 'hitting the ipod' technique appears to be a known fix, but I can't find any mention of the half-capacity crash problem.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:08 (seventeen years ago) link

is half of the hard drive corrupt? If so, why doesn't restoring sort this out?

Because there's phyical damage?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Physical. Phyical is not some technical term, as far as I know.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:18 (seventeen years ago) link

half of the hard drive corrupt? If so, why doesn't restoring sort this out?

Yes. Because it's physical destruction, restoring won't revive the dead parts. (it's just like a computer hard drive, if you look around for HDD errors on the net (you don't need to add iPod to your Google query) you'll find a lot more info)

Basically: it's half dead now and it's only going to get worse.

(xxpost)

you're lucky there's still half left, to be honest (mine had the same click of death and it was a total loss and now i play hacky-sack with it). is it still in warranty?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Mine died just like that at Christmas, but it came to life again a couple of months later, and when it plays up I use Dr C's method of giving it a thump.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:48 (seventeen years ago) link

No warranty - it's 17 months old.

Just been looking at ipodlounge again, and the 'hitting it hard' fix seems to be a well-known and reliable solution to the click of death! It seems that in my case half of the hard drive has been screwed up though. I'm still not convinced that it's totally knacked.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:55 (seventeen years ago) link

hmmm. your iPod sounds like it's doing exactly what my first-generation one started doing after its unfortunate altercation with a hard stone floor. but at least in that instance i could work out why the disk was damaged. unless the "hitting it hard" fix has actually, er, buggered it? :(
