YA READY FOR YOUR TURKEY DINNER?

The turkey has just gone into my oven. The neck and giblets are simmering to make stock for the gravy. My guests are due at 5pm. I haven't had this much "free" time for several weeks, and am not sure what to do with myself while dinner cooks.

Yesterday, I explained the ideas behind Thanksgiving to several of my friends here in Vietnam, because they were unfamiliar. But they all knew what Black Friday was already

we had fun. 20 people at our house. friends and family. it was nice. a baby. a dog. a 23 pound turkey. sambuca in my coffee.

Good meal all around and the turkey already fully broken down and turned into stock and soup and everything cleaned up and we’re chilling. That works!

The guests have gone, the leftovers are chilling in the fridge, and I'm hoping my overstuffed feeling will soon pass.

Microwaved myself a Marie Callender’s turkey pot pie for lunch, no complaints whatsoever.

My wife and I ordered a mushroom pot pie from a fancy restaurant for our main dish and are supplementing with a bunch of homemade sides and dessert. All vegetarian except for some bacon in the brussels sprouts.

One member of our household is having turkey, though.

since we’re not having anyone over we felt like turkey was a bit much so we bought some ribeye steaks. pretty sure i’m going to do this every year now tbh. the steaks that is, not the not having people over. london is usually a neat place to do thanksgiving because you get to invite other americans over that you maybe don’t see enough of. i did it up anyway though, just with smaller portions. cranberry relish, mashed butternut sqash, cornbread, wild rice, the aforementioned ribeye, and i made fuckin lava cakes for dessert. AND PUT IN A DAY’S WORK TOO.

I knew in advance that there would be a very high demand for small-sized turkeys this year. My wife wanted to have a turkey for just the two of us, for the delight of having many leftovers and some delicious dishes that use leftover turkey.

We ordered online, selecting a "12 lb. or thereabouts" sized bird. When we came to pick it up, the nearest size they had was almost 18 lbs. Our roasting pan was barely big enough. My wife shall have her wish for leftovers come true. Including braised Brussels sprouts, delicata squash, saute'd zucchini w/ mushrooms, wine, and pumpkin custard.

this was year 2 (I think) of Quorn brand meatless loaf. much prefer it to Tofurkey, though speaking its name is even more embarrassing.

Taking a break here! So we preordered in a full precooked turkey and in the past six hours I broke it down and made stock. Separated out some stock, cooled up mirepoix and simmered it and a batch of the turkey to create a lot of soup for freezing. Then there's whatever turkey we have over the next couple of days and the rest I'm going to cube or shred and freeze. (The shredded turkey I have plans for -- creating a chili from scratch later in colder months.) And that leaves turkey for tonight, with a quick prep of spicy green beans later, and everything we ordered in yesterday we just heat up and eat (gravy, cranberry chutney, stuffing, roasted potatoes and brussel sprouts -- and a small Dutch crunch apple pie). Meanwhile the turkey carcass is already in the outside trash and the kitchen is cleaned up. It’s like I’ve achieved Thanksgiving satori.

I bought a couple turkey thighs for my dinner-for-one meal (only going to cook one of them). Potatoes, carrots, celery, and onions in the pot with it. And I made a pumpkin pie yesterday.

Switching from turkey to a basic meat+potatoes+carrots pot roast (that I make - bless my family but none of my grandparents or parents took an interest in cooking and my mom is still terrible) remains the best holiday decision I've made. Turkey sucks.

I also just wanna say to everybody out there who decided to just make pasta or order some indian food tonight? I get it

Sides are where it's at so I just got a small boneless turkey breast. Sliced and heated in the gravy, it's an afterthought to the cornbread dressing (tried to recreate my mom's recipe, result was a B or B-) and grated-not-mashed sweet potato casserole (ditto, A++), creamed corn, peas, rolls, etc.

Just hosted my mother, my sister, and her boyfriend. My sister doesn't eat meat or poultry, but the rest of us did a pretty thorough job on a 12-pound turkey.

spent Thanksgiving alone for the first time in my life. for dinner I finished the cauliflower and blue Stilton soup I made last night. p solid, would make again with a less pungent cheese. a solo turkey dinner would have been (more) sad and (more) labor-intensive, probably.

We did the annual Tofurky (sorely underrated) with roasted vegetables and a mushroom rosemary gravy, and a (lemon fennel) cranberry sauce for the first time.

Got some pics from a friend who did the entire ridiculous feast for two people (including two pies and a turkey from restaurants, everything else home-made). Can't imagine facing that down.

we are heading to inlaws this afternoon for prime rib dinner. just got a text from the fam which included this line: “..oven broken, but we have a huge convection oven”

With just the two of us to feed I'll be roasting a 10.5 lb turkey for us later today. For me tonight's roast turkey dinner isn't the real treat; it's the turkey and cranberry sandwiches, turkey-rice soup, and turkey enchiladas that will come afterward.

had i known the surgery was gonna hang on this long i would not be hosting a dinner
and while i appreciate the heads up from the folks upstairs that they are hosting themselves and "will be playing music louder than usual" the conflicting bass beats do my head in

We're trying a homemade tofurky-style loaf for the first time this year.

We wanted a turducken, but vegetarian, so we're having a tofucken.

my holiday has been so nurturing and relaxing without family in the picture. just my boyfriend and i. did my morning routine of physical activity. we went for a walk in a wonderfully empty park. and now we're heating up a multiple-course dinner we picked up from a restaurant last night.

at an extended family thing. honestly could have done without the ukulele rendition of "Ring of Fire"
