Sorry. Not in mood for search function.

Classic. Have you ever felt more alive than at this moment?

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Friday, 11 November 2005 18:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Rather like Dunbar from Catch 22.

go have it looked at now. my much-repeated story?

had pain, new it was a cavity, didn't deal with it, cavity got bigger and bigger, untill tooth broke. Needed crown. Almost needed root canal.

cost of filling a cavity vs. cost of having a crown PLUS cost of root canal if needed?

fill the cavity.

hold tight. immediately you need to swoosh w/ water, the colder the better. this will numb off the nerve endings and you'll have to keep the water in your mouth but it'll give you some respite. meantime get some more water into the fridge to get it really realy cold. when it's ready mix another glass of warm water and salt it heavily. get both handy by the sink then swoosh w/ the salt water, do it hard and use your cheek to force it through your gums. the salt makes it hurt like fuck so spit it in the sink and use the iced water to take the pain off fast. keep repeating this.

i did this with a baaaad root nerve infection and within half an hour of doing this salt/iced swoosh over and over the pain had backed off a lot.

failing this get down to your local hospital and ask emergency for some help - you could really use some benzodiazapines (dihydrocodeine is good) but be careful because there's a good chance they'll think you're a junkie on the make so don't go naming these. if you tell them you haven't slept for 48 hours and your desparate for relief you may get lucky and get a couple of strips of benzos.

best of luck - it does subside - you can ride it deej

If you're in a city with a dental school, go there. They will most likely be set up to provide low-cost emergency treatment. I've been going to one for the past year, it seems like almost every week...good luck.

viborgu, Friday, 11 November 2005 18:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Andy, you bastard.

When I was a wee barren git, my mother's mom (visiting us from Italy!) employed the string / doorknob technique to yank a loose-yet-stubborn tooth from my mouth. Best part: she used our front door, which opens to a small set of stairs leading into the living room. So I stood at the top of the stairs, bracing myself, while Nona worked the door. I think it took a few tries. Fun stuff.

This was me five years ago. I was in a LOT of pain and had to get a root canal and a crown. My first. I got it fixed but they made me pay for it all at one time, maxing out my credit cards, and finally let me leave $2100 poorer/in debt.

Fortunately, this spring I finally paid off all of my credit cards. I feel for you. This is a tough situation, but please see a doctor sooner rather than later.

it appears to have subsided on its own, but when i poke the tooth in the right spot it hurts a lot, momentarily. I'm guessing its a cavity right now. I need to get this filled.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 11 November 2005 19:59 (eighteen years ago) link

...so I guess its not as urgent as I made it seem but thanks so much everyone for the good responses!

also agreeing with gargling warm salt-water...it's good for all sorts of mouth pains, teeth, gums, roof, lips etc.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 November 2005 20:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't know where you live, deej (ie, whether painkiller brands are the same there as here) but I found that Advil gelcaps were about the only painkiller strong enough to numb the root pain. I had two teeth die off while I was uninsured, so I know what that means -- eventually both received root canals which were considerably more enjoyable than the tooth ache.

Clarkson is completely right about the hot + cold water treatment.

Owwwww. Tooth pain is not something to fuck with. Now I just need to make it through until 1:00 tomorrow. Gah.

Some string and a doorknob, pain's gone.

at least you have an appt!

Surmounter, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I know! I was happy I could get one that (relatively) quick. Unfortunately it means I have to back out of a weekend road trip last minute. But damn, when the wave of pain washes over me I can't imagine doing anything at all.

Dentist appointments ARE like travel plans.

It takes WEEKS to see a dentist. I don't get it, because capitalism usually works on the premise that a service will be there for the consumer. But it's really hard to get a dentist appointment.

I broke a tooth and waited two months to get an appointment. And I have insurance!

More people need to become dentists - NOW!

aimurchie, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i know, i'm actually kind of impressed with my dentist cuz sometimes they can get me in like the next week!

Surmounter, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^ mine as well - a bit fell off one of my fillings and they managed to see me two days later.

snoball, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't have dental insurance right now but i needed some work done this summer. i still need a few more treatments but i'm waiting until a potential employer offers me a nice benefit package.

Any suggestions on dealing with this as I wait for my appointment next week? T3s? Cocaine temporarily numbs the teeth, but that's a waste of cocaine. Fuck

obligatory ***IANAD*** but pretty sure this works:

The combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen works better than the combination of an opioid drug and acetaminophen for the relief of pain from dental operations, according to results from a new analysis of published data. The analysis also showed that the ibuprofen and acetaminophen combination was safer than combinations that include opioids.

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/809415

so advil (ibuprofen) + tylenol (acetaminophen)

take it with food because ibuprofen can damage your stomach lining

cheers infinity!

Unchanging Window (Ross), Friday, 23 June 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

topical stuff like anbesol (?) is ok, in cases of mild pain. If the pain is moderate/severe I'd guess there's an infection, and you'd be best off with antibiotics.

sarahell, Friday, 23 June 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

xp

yw bud

stay healthy

i n f i n i t y (∞), Friday, 23 June 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

also if you have known liver issues, don't drink alcohol because acetaminophen messes with your liver

both these effects are for long term use but better to be safe than sorry

i n f i n i t y (∞), Friday, 23 June 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

what infinity is suggesting would probably work if it's like a dull ache, but if it's a sharp shooting pain, ... idk just otc painkillers never worked for me in terms of the sharp, shooting pain.

sarahell, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:01 (six years ago) link

fair enough

it worked when i got my wisdom teeth taken out when vicodin/hydrocodone did nothing except "relax" my muscles but i was still able to feel the dental pain

i n f i n i t y (∞), Friday, 23 June 2017 20:06 (six years ago) link

oh yeah, when I had a wisdom tooth removed a few months back, I just took some ibuprofen, and was fine. But that pain was a dull ache, and nothing compared to the shooting pain of the infected tooth, which is why it had to be removed to begin with.

sarahell, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:08 (six years ago) link

yeah it's sharp shooting pain, quite searing

the tooth is also cracked - it needs removed STAT

Unchanging Window (Ross), Friday, 23 June 2017 20:09 (six years ago) link

oh

sarah's right though

hm try the topical stuff i guess

idk

desperate times/measures

i n f i n i t y (∞), Friday, 23 June 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

you need antibiotics. It's just *one more thing* right? On the other hand, once you get the tooth dealt with, the rest of the life garbage might feel better.

sarahell, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:13 (six years ago) link

ah fuck that sounds pretty apt.

Alright antibiotics it is, ATM i've taken a muscle relaxant which includes ibuprofen

Unchanging Window (Ross), Friday, 23 June 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link

good call sarah

sorry for the wrong info ross

i n f i n i t y (∞), Friday, 23 June 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link

no need to apologize, i think you've both been quite helpful :)

Unchanging Window (Ross), Friday, 23 June 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

recently i discovered that i'd had a cracked tooth for probably several years, and the crack went right across a nerve. it chose this year to start telling me about it and fuck man that was some of the most intense pain i've ever felt, feeling 4 u ross

tangenttangent, Saturday, 2 November 2019 14:39 (four years ago) link

A dentist fucked up years ago and made tooth bad and cracked. Now need root canal. Still costs like £700-800 even on the NHS - how? Cancelled one appointment because poor, next one in two weeks. Just had emergency appointment with nice sadist who plugged up tooth with temporary stuff, laughing. Crying on bench in town and mouth is still currently partially numb with anaesthetic. Taking dihydrocodeine - upthread muscle relaxants are mentioned - does it work?

tangenttangent, Saturday, 2 November 2019 14:44 (four years ago) link

it is genuinely much cheaper to fly to eastern europe to have a root canal, I had one for about £10 (was living there at the time, didn't fly out specially)

I mean it still wasn't a lot of fun

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 2 November 2019 14:49 (four years ago) link

at the time I was hanging around with american ex junkies and was surprised by their extensive knowledge of over the counter tooth pain treatment

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 2 November 2019 14:51 (four years ago) link

That’s actually not a terrible idea. I will look into it!

tangenttangent, Saturday, 2 November 2019 14:54 (four years ago) link

I've never had much luck with dentists but for first time I found one I'm super happy with this year, though I doubt it can compete with Eastern European prices

cherry blossom, Saturday, 2 November 2019 14:59 (four years ago) link

xp where are you based tt? My old dentists claims to do it for £250

gyac, Saturday, 2 November 2019 15:28 (four years ago) link

actually I looked it up and apparently it doesn’t matter where you’re based for a dentist? Not saying it’s the cheapest but could work out the same as travelling with costs etc and easier if you need aftercare.

gyac, Saturday, 2 November 2019 15:32 (four years ago) link

Apparently it’s like £300 for the actual root canal and then a varied amount for the crown depending on size and whether or not you want a white one which vanity insists that I do. I will get it done, it just sucks so much until then. You’re right about staying local for after care though... Pain has at least worn off to the point of being able to walk around.
