i don't mind LARYNGITIS. sometimes i go days without speaking in perfect health.

nein Socken (nein Socken), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 00:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I just contracted scarlet fever and my throat hurts too much to speak. It is difficult, when you want to say something but you realize it's just going to be so damn hard that you give up. It makes you much more economical and discriminating in what you express. I've been communicating with my roommate primarily with hand gestures for most of the evening. Also text messaging from 10 feet away.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 04:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Eek isnt scarlet fever some really bad thing? :/

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 04:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Short answer: YES. I had strep throat once which can lead to scarlet fever. The most dangerous aspect of scarlet fever is the potential for complications, as with most diseases. It is also infectious so beware of people with red spots! Fortunately it is now quite rare.

From Britannica:

Complications are frequent. The sinuses probably are always secondarily involved, frequently remain infected during convalescence, and constitute an important focus in which the organism remains to make the patient a carrier. Abscesses of the ear and mastoiditis occur. Infection of the glands of the neck frequently results in abscess formation. In certain instances the streptococcus enters the bloodstream and is carried to various parts of the body, where localized areas of infection develop. Among the late complications are nephritis (inflammation of the collecting tubules in the kidney, occurring in 0.5 to 1 percent of all cases), arthritis, and rheumatic fever.

I reckon I could communicate with JW with just hand gestures

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh god, poor Laura. Jon, can't you just slip 'er a micky so by the time she wakes up she's all better? Do the spots itch, like chix pox?

Before they yanked my tonsils out in 3rd grade I used to get sore throats & strep so often that I worked out a sort of "head" voice for speaking, a nasal one that bypassed my throat as much as possible. My mother knew to get me to the ER whenever I started using it. Yuck. This is not like laryngitis, though, when I felt fine except my voice was missing -- it's pretty novel for the first day or two. Then it turns into "Hush" and there are scary floating guys who kill you & cut out your heart.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Kick 'em when they're down, Markelby.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I have laryngitis. The first time I swallowed this morning it was painful enough to bring tears to my eyes.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha! I thought he meant getting it = understanding what Laura was trying to say!

I always pride myself on showing people the decency and respect they would show me, Remy.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, Markelby has been nice to me on ILX since I expressed my pain of balding to him. :D

jdubz (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Jeez, no more sickness! (Remy -- heard from Arthur and will e-mail you.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

No! Do tell!

some... bitches... or something... were... happy?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Laryngitis for me was always painless. It has been every time I have ever had it. If there was severe throat pain involved, it usually meant strep throat or once I had the mumps and that was icky painful too.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:10 (eighteen years ago) link

it's more chest than throat

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Tonsilitis is the nastiest minor throat infection type thing, I think.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I read this thread last night and woke up this morning w/killer sore throat. Everybody wash your hands after using ilx!

i have no memory of any of this... laryngitis... x-men dreams... madonna at misshapes??

s1ocki, Thursday, 28 February 2008 03:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I practically lost my voice too. My mouth feels like a furnace and have had hardly any sleep because of catarrh in my throat. I got antibiotics and just as it starts to work i get a stinking headache so for the 3rd night in a row i cant sleep. argh

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 28 February 2008 03:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Huh. I have never seen or heard the word catarrh before. The Spanish word for the common cold is catarro Is catarrh a Briticism?

Jesse, Thursday, 28 February 2008 05:10 (sixteen years ago) link

nine years pass...

do i have to go to the doctor? cuz my GP moved to East Williamsburg.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 June 2017 00:34 (six years ago) link

Losing my voice occurred around the tenth day of my current cold, which means I don't know whether to take decongestants (dry out the larynx) or not.

My cancer drugs have gotten me better, but also gave me the immune system of a 90-yo.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 June 2017 16:32 (six years ago) link

four years pass...

this sucks. it's not from illness, it's from shouting at a soccer match.

recovery been slow as I train people for a living and couldn't vocal rest.

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Sunday, 27 June 2021 18:14 (two years ago) link

had this happen a few years ago in the Philippines due to vocal fatigue too.

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Sunday, 27 June 2021 18:17 (two years ago) link

9 days, and some but not much improvement. the order of operations seems to have been:

1) damage voice naturally by yelling at sporting event
2) didn't take proper care shortly after
3) bad allergies/post nasal drip showed up, causing already irritated uvula to swell
4) now most of the 'damage' from the sporting event is gone, but vocal chords is still blocked by thick-assed mucus.
5) cough has developed due to the post-nasal drip

not being able to sing for 9 days hasn't been fun. meh. Steroid seems to at least have stopped the swelling but this is hell. this is why I get on people for screaming at rock/pop musicians for cancelling shows due to vocal issues. this is what can happen.
