Tony Scott vs. Ridley Scott! Films! Directing!

Though really this thread just boils down to Legend versus Top Gun.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Blade Runner vs. Domino?

chap who would dare to violate the least amount of laws of physics (chap), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Sir Ridley Scott loves freckle faced women who look like they haven't slept for 3 weeks. This is probably why he took on Thelma and Louise.

Also, he is the producer of Tony Scott's Domino so this thread isn't as senseless as it seems.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Cinematically senseless I mean. GLADIATOR VS. BEVERLY HILLS COP II

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Gaaaaah I just pulled up IMDB to look at other Tony Scott directed films and realized the only one that I pretty well understand what occurred in it was Man on Fire. Even Top Gun is confusing to me! Days of Thunder, I forgot about that film, and I'm kind of irritated that I'm remembering it now :(

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Still that Gerard Depardieu Christopher Columbus movie is even less comprehensible than Days of Thunder so I mean really this is a close call.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

I officially declare this thread mine and no one else can post here.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

I only saw Top Gun relatively recently, and thought it was absolute wank. I'd probably love it if I'd first watched it when I was a kid.

If you go on number of indisputible classics, it's 2 to Ridley, 0 to Tony.

Top Gun, I enjoy to watch, but not in a manner that involves knowing what they are on about in any fashion.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

i remember tearing up a bit at top gun, aged 8

Yeah it's sad when the doctor from ER dies. Also Meg Ryan is way cuter than Kelly McGinnis.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

also that damn berlin song still makes me feel the funny feeling

this is sicilian medieval thuggery (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

that song is pretty good.

But you have to admit, Days of Thunder is crap.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

It was produced by Giorgio Moroder! That "Berlin" song is just the singer from Berlin doing GM lyrics over GM synths!

this is sicilian medieval thuggery (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Spy Game was about how Robert Redford and Brad Pitt pretended that they don't look exactly alike and then Brad Pitt gets beat up by Chinamen or something and then Redford saves his ass right before they McCain him, or something. I think this all happened because Pitt's girlfriend was unsavory? Or because Pitt was, I forget now. Anyway, it was great.

Hannibal is like the worst movie ever made but it does have a shot of Anthony Hopkins eating Ray Liotta's brains out of his head, while Liotta is still alive and having a conversation with Julianne Moore, so that was kind of worth it, seeing it I mean.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Who, me? What? What if Michael Bay turned out to be related to Tony and Ridley too? Would we have all the movies at once? Would we need anybody else? Could we have George Lucas killed?

YES, YOU. You ragged on Leafy Phoenix and Russell Crowe and even the anonymous chick and declared it the "worst movie [I] own." Then you put on The Matrix and also explained that it was a terrible movie. Granted you were drunk, but I can't think of a single other boyfriend I have who would ever have said anything like that about ANY of those movies, because everyone I hang out with, well they are crazy about crap.

Black Rain is the Yakuza version of Year of the Dragon. Both have a big layer of cheese when it comes to the story and dialog, but they look cool. Ridley Scott is all about a bunch of smoke, steam, dripping water or rain in every scene.

Viggo has a Tony Scott connection as he was in Crimson Tide.

He and his brother Tony Scott have worked with several of the same actors. Ridley cast Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas in Alien (1979), while Tony cast him as Mike Metcalf, mentor to Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun (1986). Tom Cruise appeared in Top Gun for Tony, and Legend (1985) for Ridley. Giancarlo Giannini played a police officer in Hannibal (2001), and again in Man on Fire (2004). Gary Oldman appeared in True Romance (1993) for Tony and Hannibal (2001) for Ridley. Brad Pitt appeared in True Romance for Tony and Thelma and Louise for Ridley. Viggo Mortensen appeared in Crimson Tide (1995) for Tony, and G.I. Jane (1997) for Ridley. In addition, Tim Robbins, who appeared in Top Gun, has been involved in a long term relationship with Susan Sarandon, who appeared in Thelma and Louise, since 1988.

at this amusement park near charlotte, nc, paramount's carowinds, they used to have this godawful days of thunder ride. it was just a theater with a bunch of motion simulator seats that moved in time with the movie.

later it was turned into a godawful james bond ride, "License to Thrill". a very embarassed looking judy dench stars in the intro movie playing outside for people in line. i hate amusement parks.

I've been to Tony Scott's house! So has Chuck Tatum, I think.

Me either!

Heh, really? I guess I thought it was fairly common knowledge, I remember hearing it mentioned a few times around when Fellowship got released.

Ridley Scott is all about a bunch of smoke, steam, dripping water or rain in every scene.

This is absolutely correct. (cf. Tony Scott is all about cool backlighting and Joel Schumacher is all about swirling drapery.)

Every Ridley Scott movie contains at least one signature shot:
Alien - water dripping down the chain in the cargo hold
Blade Runner - steam/noodle shop
Legend - Leaves swirling artfully in every frickin' shot
Black Rain - fog/vinyard
Thelma and Louise - dust/roostertail
1492 - *no one has seen 1492
White Squall - rain/male nipples

etc.

My mom did. Must ask her.

I didn't know until recently that Viggo Mortenson was once married to Exene from X.

How will the smoke, steam, rain and dripping water work out in the Encyclopedia Brown movie?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh, It's a Sharon Waxman article, I would take it with a grain of salt.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh god I've been on that Days of Thunder ride when it was at Kings Island.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Is Waxman unreliable? I don't know anything about her beyond her byline.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

She describes HBO's Encyclopedia Brown series as "successful," yet I have NEVER SEEN a single episode of said series. Hah!

How will the smoke, steam, rain and dripping water work out in the Encyclopedia Brown movie?

Encyclopedia Brown will use the presence of smoke to identify the location of a fire.

'course, i think the rule's only in effect for flix RS directs...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he'll hire Tony to direct. Then Encyclopedia can solve the Mystery of the Gigantic Exploding Fireballs. And Bugs Meany will dress all in black and enjoy stubbing out cigarettes on people's eyeballs.

Which Scott brother is the worse director?

two years pass...

Hmmm.

The Financial Times is reporting (sub req'd) in Friday's edition that Ridley and Tony "have expressed interest in running MGM". The newspaper quotes "people familiar with the situation" as its sources. The assumption is that, if MGM emerges from the busted auction as a stand-alone and restructured company, a new management team will be brought in to run the studio once its fate is determined by creditors. "The Scott brothers have their own production company, Scott Free, but it is unclear whether their proposal would involve combining it with MGM, or if they are seeking a stake in the recapitalized studio. They could not be reached for comment."

Just saw Man on Fire. Beautiful colors. Affecting ending. Only problem was believing Denzel could be such a bad ass.
