Kids on the bus playing ropey mp3s through their tinny phones, and often singing along badly in a group, usually to the same song over and over. Classic or dud?

It's a mood thing. A lot of the time classically amusing, often dudly off-pissing, esp if singing bad, song awful, trying to read impenetrable modern novel

for the record is was Ray J's "One Wish" last night. blimey those girls really had no idea how awful their singing voices were.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

classic if they're hackney schoolgirls on the 277. those girls all have serious style, massive attitude and can actually properly sing. the last time i heard them they were doing 'gold digger', one of them was doing the sample and a couple of the others were doing the rap.

They were probably hoping someone from Pop Idol would just happen to be in hearing range to *discover* them. Girls can be narcissistic and seem to believe they have fabulous singing voices and were born stars.

Fucking awful, pathetic 'showing off'. I am hoping phone wars will start though, two or more separate parties playing tracks loudly at the same time, to highlight the ridiculousness of the it all.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

At least they've all stopped listening to that God-awful re-work of Going Underground that was so popular in the summer. It had terrible comedy lyrics and they all found it screechingly funny. Actually, I hate teenagers on buses full stop. I hate the shrieking and I hate the way they always turn on the weaker members of their packs. Teenage girls are evil. I thought that when I was one and I still think it now. Plus, also massive dud if the little bitches in their pastel sports wear take the piss out of what I'm wearing. Why have people over 20 suddenly become visible to them?

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

i'm not being a grouch! well not all the time. sometimes i do think it's great. if a bit rude to the other people on the bus who might not be in such a good mood.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

This is, pretty much why I've stopped taking the bus and started taking the overground. It's expensive and overcrowded, but at least it's bloody QUIET.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm more annoyed by people on buses who sneeze and cough continuously and don't bother covering up their mouth/nose while doing it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

Lex I don't give a flying fuck if it's grouchy. It's really fucking rude. Why they go on and on about bloody respect when they obviously haven't got the faintest tiny sliver of it for other people is beyond me, but there you go. Studies have shown that teenagers all become slightly autistic between the ages of 13 and 16. True fact!

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Kids shouting and screaming on buses drive my wife crazy but I'm fairly immune to them. Especially if I've got my iPod with me cos I can just drown them out with that.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

If anything I'm just stunned and baffled by the audacity and 'fearlessness' in the sense that it's deemed okay by them to shout and play music in such a confined public space. How did they get the impression that this was okay? How do they not worry about what other people would think? Obviously it says a lot about my own fear of other people and shyness in this respect, but naturally I still think logic is on my side.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

I fucking hate this. Much as I enjoy hearing new music, I really hate the arrogance of it, assuming that other people don't mind hearing it through the bloody awful little speakers, which would make anything sound shite. Last night on the 253 some people were listening to what I can only describe as white noise with shouting. I'm going to get myself a thing that can play stuff audibly, and play Sibelius at them. Or Autechre.

I like to get the C2 from Kentish Town, as it's full of posh schoolgirls.

not sitting down != being a menace. i am not opposed to little kids not sitting down, unless the inertia of the bus accelerating or braking rapidly causes them to fall and hurt themselves. this still doesn't excuse the girl shouting loudly at someone right next to them though, or threatening to beat them up for not doing what they're told.

I commuted on the Oxford Tube for sixteen years and always used a Walkman (and later a Discman). I think I only got asked to turn it down a bit maybe two or three times in that whole period, but then I usually made sure I kept it at a reasonable volume. There were never any "respect" problems with anyone else on the coach but then the Oxford Tube isn't the South London school run bus system.

i think everyone knows my position on this by now, but i really do have a great deal of affection for the kids on the bus playing their mp3s and singing along. my own headphones are sufficient to block out their noise if i want to listen to my own music - though people TALKING bugs me much more - but often i don't because the kids' music is usually great!

it's especially great when you coincidentally synchronise your music with theirs, this happened to me with RIHANNA.

You know, this discussion can be mapped almost entirely onto the Yelling Things From Cars thread.

The basic debate here is exactly the same, either:

a) It's great! It's an expression of joy and youth! How dare you coddled old middle-class people be such killjoys?

b) It's horrible! They're invading my personal space and intimidating myself and others!

As a wise person once said, binary binary binary, is that all you people think?

My personal take is this is fine, provided it's innocent enough. If the kids in question are aggressive or intimidating, whether or not there's music playing doesn't make the blindest bit of difference.

If you resent your personal space being invaded, why the fuck do you get the bus in the first place? They've ALWAYS been noisy, crowded, chaotic, intrusive and unpleasant, especially during rush hour/around school times. They're also slow, clunky, unreliable and its impossible to predict how long a journey is actually going to take. The trains or tubes around London may be shit in their own way, but at least everyone is silent on them. Even WALKING is quicker than the bus, especially in Central London. And at least you know how long it's going to take.

ten months pass...

classic or dud or a resocialisation of public life through the collective enjoyment of music

The way teenagers use their mobile phones may annoy the hell out of anyone older than 15, but their seemingly obnoxious desire to play music in public needs explaining. To some, sodcasting might seem like a bloody-minded imposition, a two-fingers from those who don't care what others think of them. To the teenagers, though they probably wouldn't put it quite like this, it's a resocialisation of public life through the collective enjoyment of music; it's friends doing the most natural thing imaginable – sharing what makes them happy. And if you try and restrict people's innate instinct to enjoy music together, it just squeezes out from the sides, like an over-filled sandwich.

desperate

Classic or death, more like.

Seldom it's less resocialization of public life so much as a severely insular lack of awareness or recognition of others, of others' space, and their equal rights to it - the most extreme case I've seen being someone very loudly and aggressively yelling at someone to get off a streetcar because he politely asked someone to turn off their cell-phone mp3 player.

"claiming public space" means making it that little bit less public? gertcha. i know that hancox idolizes east london kids, but they don't have special claims over public space. just because they enjoy playing mp3s and pissing everyone else off doesn't mean it's the most natural thing in the world; and even if it is, ever heard of the naturalistic fallacy? if he thinks they have a poor lot in life (which they do), then perhaps he'd be better off writing about how to improve it, rather than saying, "their life sucks therefore they should be able to play mp3s." not exactly socialist.
