WILDFIRE

I was just up in the San Fernando Valley and the sky looks like a volcanic eruption. There's a 17,000 acre-sized wildfire up around Calabasas and Thousand Oaks.

Yeah, I saw it driving home yesterday. People only really worry when it goes into the millions of acres.

And yeah, this has been major fire season weather and a half. I am seeing a movie tonight partially to beat the heat.

Didn't like 900,000 chickens get roasted alive? I wonder how they came out.

(Ah, that was bad.)

andy --, Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

"San Timoteo Canyon fire: 1,160 acres burned between Redlands and Moreno Valley in Riverside County; 25 percent contained; destroyed three coops at a ranch believed to have as many as 90,000 chickens; no homes threatened; cause undetermined...."

I was off by a few.

Too close for comfort :(

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Dont all these conveniently timed fires make anyone else suspicious that theres some crazy arsonist going out and burning things every fall, or are the conditions just so rife for fire that its inevitable?

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Uh, the latter? Surely you've noticed the weather around here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

It's a (very) dry heat.

I know about the weather and all that shit, but because its dry and windy doesnt make things spontaneously combust.

Anyone remember John Orr, the Glendale Fire Dept. Captain who was a famous arson investigator as well as a serial arsonist...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 30 September 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

i have friends up near lake christine fire in CO, and spend time near durango, whole situation. according to this report i can blame guns and an undocumented dane for these. [BAD ATTEMPT AT JOKE REMOVED - mod]

Like the Spring Creek Fire, which Lake Garland resident and undocumented Danish immigrant Jesper Joergensen has been accused of starting, the Lake Christine Fire is believed to have been caused by humans. According to the Eagle County Sheriff's Office, 23-year-old Richard Karl Miller and 22-year-old Sarah Marcus, both residents of El Jebel, have been accused of fourth-degree arson for allegedly shooting tracer rounds at a Basalt shooting range on the evening of Tuesday, July 3, that caused the initial sparks.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 5 July 2018 15:22 (seven years ago)

Some very stupid and irresponsible target shooters started a 12,000 acre fire a few dozen miles from Portland a couple of years ago, by shooting at exploding materials at the end of summer when everything was tinder dry and just waiting for a spark.

Two weeks ago my girlfriend and I rented an airbnb mother-in-law unit in Felton, CA and spent the weekend hiking through Big Basin Redwood Park among majestic 2000 year old redwoods. This morning Felton was evacuated and tonight the entire park is on fire. SF is blanketed in smoke right now from an entirely different forest fire. The climate catastrophes scientists have been warning about for decades are here. This is the beginning of the end.

I really hope Armstrong Woods doesn’t burn. One of my favorite places anywhere.

Sounds like #WalbridgeFire has grown to an estimated 20,000 acres (up from 14,000 that was just reported). Also appears to be holding west of the Big Ridge west of Dry Creek (creek). Holding at Armstrong. Let's keep it up! 💪

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 23 August 2020 15:22 (five years ago)

Indeed. The smoke on the air in the city is more noticeable but on the bright side compared to last week's crushing heat with the storms it's much cooler here at least. But here is not the entire area by a long shot -- that said I was just on the phone with my folks in Carmel, and they said that while the smoke was still around it too had been cooler. We'll just have to see how the next 36 hours goes.
