Wow. Now that's a homosexual album cover.

I love the dude who's hanging on the other dude.

Notice I didn't use the large image this time.

Pray away the gay.

I was up until 4:30 a.m. mixing last night/this morning, and then I was woken up at 6:30 by a thunderstorm and a possessed cat.

I slept from 6:15 am to 8:00 am. What do I win?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Is that guy in the middle wearing a shirt made out of a quilt?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I slept exactly 8 hours, then I woke up and drank espresso. AWAKE.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:03 (eighteen years ago) link

what were you doing up so late, jaymc? you win a prize when you tell us.

the truth.

i slept for 7.5 hours, as usual.

I'm looking forward to hearing bits of the new album this weekend, jaymc.

I'm listening to it at work right now! Unfortunately, mastering had to be pushed back a week, so you'll hear the unmastered versions of the songs. I still think they sound good, though. But as Matt said the other day, mastering is basically just like pressing a big "BETTER" button.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I sort of had a rough night, not worth really going into, except I got drunk, got into a fight with someone close to me and then didn't really feel like going to sleep. I do this to myself too often, though. Not the drunk/fight part, but staying up until unreasonable hours on a weeknight.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Tomorrow I have to rent a car and drive to Manitowoc, WI for a boat show. Three hours each way. I rented the mid-size with the CD player, of course. I'm way more excited about the driving than I am the boat show. Maybe I'll stop in Milwaukee for lunch.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:06 (eighteen years ago) link

You should buy a boat, you know, on a whim.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Listening to the album right now is kind of interesting, because there are new lyrics on like five songs that I'm hearing for the first time.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:09 (eighteen years ago) link

It would be funny if all the songs were about you, vaguely hidden but not very well. "Oh you had a lovely beard, until you shaved it off, you are so hot playing keyboard over there..."

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I toyed with the idea of growing a winter beard the other day, but then realized that I was just too lazy to shave. It happens like that. First I grow a beard, and before you know it, I haven't taken out the trash in a week.

I keep getting random songs stuck in my head this morning. Most recently it was a combo of My milkshake's got all the boys in the yard and It's all about the he-said, she-said BULLshit!. Let me tell you, they don't mix together very well, even in my head.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:00 (eighteen years ago) link

that's weird -- whenever i hear the mister rogers theme song it always ALWAYS segues into "hey jude" at the end where he says "won't you be my neighbor, neighbor NEIGHBOR NEIGHBOR AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGH"

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Do any of you own City of the Century? We watched the first disc via netflix and will probably get the second one tomorrow, but I told myself I'd cancel netflix then, which would leave the 3rd disc...

I loved the espresso this morning! And I'm so glad we're using our espresso maker because I have 6 tiny cups for it I never get to use. When my mom and Hev come to visit, I'm going to ask Nick to make it again so we can at least use 4 of the cups at once.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's my real e-mail, J.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:21 (eighteen years ago) link

City of the Century is pretty readily available as a video rental. Isn't it fun? I love those DVDs. I've seen them twice and now I am a bottomless pit of Chicago trivia.

I'm feeling kind of confrontational, today. I am definitely not getting enough sleep and it's now catching up to me in the form of...

TOTAL BITCHINESS. And also hypersensitivity. Yeah! I am FUN TO BE WITH!

I think I'll go pick some fights on the internet.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

That was what I was like yesterday, pulla, but there is hope for you because I'm in an almost annoyingly fantastic mood today.

Today is one of the rare days that I leave iTunes running for all to hear (quietly). I just stepped out of the room for two minutes, and when I came back "Get Me Off" by Basement Jaxx was halfway done playing. I think I turned purple. I pray no one noticed.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:41 (eighteen years ago) link

"Get Me Off"

[heavy breathing]

Give your body to me
Give your body to me
Let your body be free, free
Your body, your body with me

[continuing heavy breathing]

Give your body to me
Give your body to me
Let your body be free, free
Your body, your body with me

I want to undress you
Wanna caress you, (wanna caress you)
Don`t wanna be coy [barely audible] (coy hoy)
It's time to get me off

I want to undress you
Wanna caress you, (wanna caress you)
Don`t wanna be coy [softly] (coy hoy)
It's time to get me off

Come on baby, thrust me, trust me, get me off
You're my poison and I cannot get enough

Come on baby, thrust me, trust me, get me off
You're my poison and I cannot get enough

Get me off
Get me off (get me off!)
Get me off (games, games) (get me off!)
Get me off (get me off!)
Get me off
Get me off (get me off!)
You got to get me off!

Give your body to me
Give your body to me
Let your body be free, free
Your body, your body with me

Give your body to me
Give your body to me
Let your body be free, free
Your body, your body with me

I want to undress you
Wanna caress you, (wanna caress you)
Don`t wanna be coy [normal volume] (coy hoy)
It's time to get me off

I want to undress you
Wanna caress you, (wanna caress you)
Don`t wanna be coy
It's time to get me off

Come on baby, thrust me, trust me, get me off
You're my poison and I cannot get enough (take it)

Come on baby, thrust me, trust me, get me off
You're my poison and I cannot get enough

(take-take it, take it)
[louder] (take-take it, take it)
(get me off, so good)
[heavy breathing]

Give your body to me
Give your body to me
Let your body be free, free
Your body, your body with me

The music's pumpin and I wish you'd do the same to me
I (come on, you know you can do it, you know you wanna do it)
You`re so freaky, treat me, make me come
Oh baby baby please (give your body to me)
You got to get me off
([male] get me off)

It's time to get me off
[heavy breathing]

Speaking of music, baked goods, and racy lyrics, the title to this thread has put "Hot Freaks" by Guided by Voices in my head.

I met a nondairy creamer she was exclusively laid out just like a fruit cake with a wet spot bigger than a great lake she took me to the new church and baptized me with salt she told me LIQUOR I am a new man. HOT STREETS!

OH WOW! That's like one of my favorite fliers I ever made, and it was for one of the WORST SHOWS EVER. I set it up myself, at this restaurant that was just starting to have shows, and was excited because it was my band, Sarah's band, and our friend PJ's band, but the bartender and waitress just kept yelling at us to turn down. It was horrible.

Fleer - manufacturer of balls (?)

Chicago smelled nice when I went back. Is it using a new shampoo, maybe? After getting off the highway, the first familiar sight was, as always, Hilary's Urban Eatery, which made me think: do people really ever eat there? Or does it just exist, maybe? Is it beyond mere "business?" Also: why do lots of kids in Wicker Park look like they just came from Brooklyn? They didn't before. They need to maintain their Chicago stylez.

Well, I drove up to my sousaphone player's parent's cabin in Spooner, Wisconsin on Friday. His dad made us hamburgers at two in the morning. Then we drove up to the boundary waters (at the Minnesota/Canada border) the next morning and took a flat-bottom boat to an island where the wedding gig was. It was such a weird combination between wedding-mode, camping-mode, and gig-mode. Also, nstead of a wedding cake, they had a Ben & Jerry's ice cream bar. It was an open bar without a bar tender, just infinite bottles of whiskey, scotch, wine, and beer where you just grabbed whatever you wanted and drank it straight.

We played three sets and I got completely trashed. At some point I felt horrible was ready to crash in our cabin when there was some noise about playing an afterbar IN ANOTHER CABIN. It was some weird summer camp shit. Our snare drummer was lying in bed in his underwear, and he woke up, put his sandles on, and started hiking down the trail. That inspired me, so we went and played a vulgar and sloppy after set.

Next morning, we left and found the coolest breakfast place ever. They make and sell Dork Clothing and clever liberal bumper stickers there. I had awesome fried walleye for breakfast. Then we drove 10 hours to get home and tried to reach friends in New Orleans on the phone.

Now I'm torn in way too many directions at work, between a ton of work to get done, worrying about New Orleans, my head spinning from relationship stuff, and normal Monday morning unmotivation.

xpost - Didn't they? I left before that, but I remember that's where they were heading. The hipstery in WP is completely out of control, at least for my stomach. It's like they have to raise the hipster quotient in order to compete with the yuppies and everyone's just raising the ante, one legwarmer/latte at a time.

Also: I had a great time at the Mexican wedding and danced so much that my feet are STILL crippled. I even danced to "Gasolina."

not that this has anything to do with chicago, but i tried to go on a 60 mile bike trip this weekend, along the Santa Ana River. my friend managed to get two flat tires; unfortunately, we only had one spare tube and no tire irons. so we had to call another friend for help at about mile 40. there was a really strong sea breeze on the return trip, so i didn't mind too terribly having to stop.

You look appropriately Chicago-hip, though, Sarah. I kept seeing W.P. kids who looked like they'd made special trips to Brooklyn to observe and import their styles and accessories, which was a little bit sad. There were even people in NYC-specific items, like A-train shirts and such. Though they could have been NYC expats, I suppose, what with everyone all into moving to Chicago these days. (Which, yeah, expect an influx: everytime I'm in a bar here someone goes on about how he or she's been thinking about moving to Chicago. At first I thought I just noticed it more, but no -- it's all the rage now.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

My friend Nick B@rtell is moving to Chicago next week! He's one of the saxophone players for Digdown, although I think he played on the night before you guys came to the gig. He's staying with his sister until he finds a place to live and a band to play with.

I don't worry about sullying the purity of the city or anything. Let New Yorkers move here. New Yorkers are fine individuals.

Still, I wonder what the rage is about. Did they hear about Millenium Park or something? It's nice and all, but instead of the bean, there should be 40-ft bronze likeness of Will Smith, and it should be called Willenium Park.

Hey -- has anyone here ever been to Gulliver's? It's on Howard, maybe two blocks west of Western? It's purported to be "America's most beautiful pizzeria." So we went there on Saturday. And I have to tell you guys, if you've never been there, that it's AWESOME. The ceiling is covered with chandeliers, like 50 per dining room. There are three dining rooms and an outdoor seating area. There are these oooold booths and tons of antiques plastered all over the walls and every available surface. It claims to be the North Side's original destination for deep dish pizza, and I can confirm that it was pretty tasty.

I would like to propose a mid-winter FAP there because it's the coziest, warmest place I've been in a good long while.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Weird. Lisa L@buz mentioned that place to me the other night, because I was telling her about Grizzly Man and how Timothy and Jewel had met at a Gulliver's Travels-themed restaurant. I've never been there, but in the wake of the cozy red booths of Calo being converted into a more upscale Italian dining experience, I've been looking for an old, dimly lit pizzeria.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:00 (eighteen years ago) link

(I swear, I wasn't trying to name-drop. At first I couldn't remember who had mentioned Gulliver's to me, but then I did.) (I have been curious about Gulliver's for a while, though, cuz I always pass it on the way to Target.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:01 (eighteen years ago) link

That's weird! This place must be seen to be believed. We had driven past it a zillion times before too and we just decided to go in on Saturday. The pizza was good, and I'm not even really that into deep dish. We had a small cheese-and-mushroom pizza that came to $10 and it was enough for two of us for lunch. Huge menu too. It would be a good place to go on a date. They;re open til 1AM. No servers in costume though.

They have thin crust too! You can get thin crust IN the pan! I don't like deep dish either, since it's usually gross, but this wasn't gross. I'm not going to tell you that it's the BEST pizza I've ever eaten, but it's worth going there for the atmo.

They have a HUGE round table that looks like it's from 500 years ago and probably seats 10-12 people. Maybe we could reserve that sometime and have a huge Northside FAP. (It's pretty convenient to 90/94 too, if anyone wants to come down from WI)

What's Restaurant Club?

I thought you'd ask.

(Please ignore weird photo of me on the front page.)

(Actually, that doesn't really do a good job of explaining. Basically, some friends of mine had the idea to go out to dinner every Friday night, and invite anyone who wanted to come via e-mail. Each week a new person would pick a new restaurant to go to, with the idea that no restaurant would ever be repeated. 280 weeks later, here we are.)

Chicago: Hot Streets!
jaymc, I really like the Ditty Bops! I mean, I hadn't heard them before now, ... In theory, porn sounds kind of fun, but I've never ever seen any didn't ...

Yes, yes, I found this on the way to the Ditty Bops "fan fiction" sites.

But, back to business:

Canasta cover art should identically mimic the "Hot Streets" cover, with (left to right): Megan, EL, Jaymc, Colin, Priest.

P.S. I guess I could look this up, but are there "band fiction" sites?
