Those ads bring out the worst in me. Or the best.

It might leave stains that even Shout won't get out.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't the CEO a major perve? I read some brief article that said he takes all the dirty polaroids himself.

Kelly is half-East Indian, half-Irish, half Thai. She just started working for our new American Apparel store in Winnipeg, although she often volunteers at our three sites in Mexico City. She says she loves working for American Apparel because of the camaraderie of all of the other girls, three of whom she shares an impossibly hip flat with. Sometimes they make out. She is wearing a solid blue unisex tank top and athletic shorts.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:16 (eighteen years ago) link

A buddy of mine who's a print broker went down to their HQ and said he's convinced that all the hot girls that work there have been sent to charm school. He was blown away.

andy --, Friday, 5 August 2005 15:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Kari works at our American Apparel store in New York, where the staff regularly touch her in uncomfortable ways and make inappropriate comments about her breasts -- which, to be fair, are large and beautifully shaped. She is seen here in a wet t-shirt through which her nipples are visible.

Yup, and he's currently being sued by former employees for sexual harrassment (no surprise).

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Guys guys guys can't you see that these ads are a barely restrained and vicious critique of American society as a whole?!?! "AMERICAN APPAREL" = t-shirt (extrapolated out into "tyranny-shirt") made "transparent" (see-thru, as in "see through the tyranny") by the refreshing and cleansing force of "water" (i.e., the persistance of the worker's rebellion against the overseers, like the constant and powerful tides of the ocean) to expose the "nipples" (i.e., the plight of the underpriviliged - they are brown and wrinkly, how much more obvious can a metaphor be?). Give American Apparel some credit, dudes.

Outside of the rampant sexual harrassment and free love in the workplace, the guy is helping to set a model for ethical business in the US... and he's doing quite well. Radiohead and all those poseurs must buy AA tour shirts or they look like dicks.

andy --, Friday, 5 August 2005 15:39 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe Dov just threatens to jizz in th0m yorke's good eye

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't stand their ads because they always look like the shitty faux-Wolfgang Tilmans/Terry Richardson/Nan Goldin/etc crap I had to see all the time when I was a photo major in the late 90s/early 00s. That stuff will never look hot to me, only really lame and icky.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 5 August 2005 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

i liked the "real girls" and the overall smuttiness of the ads for a while. selling ethical business practices wrapped in amateur porn aesthetics is quite slick. somewhere along the line ads started to turn my stomach.

dan (dan), Friday, 5 August 2005 16:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Why do people never use the kind of "real girls" that I think are cute in ads? It's always the super thin "exotic" version of "real girls."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 5 August 2005 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

I really wish Sean C. was still hosting the American Apparel/Head Games corporate-ad album cover on his server.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:00 (eighteen years ago) link

In real life, most of the AA girls (I see them out in LA all the time) are shorter than "standard" model-types. They are exotic but quite real for LA. They're not "knock-outs" at all.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you have to be over 5'9" to be a knock-out? Does the height add gravitas? (This is a serious question, I'm not baiting you Spencer)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I hate it when you say shit like this, Spencer. You make me feel like a schmuck for moving back to the Mid West.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Kate Moss is 5'7" which was quite odd for the time... I think shorter models are becoming more common these days, but the catwalks need HEIGHT for the clothes to drape properly.

andy --, Friday, 5 August 2005 17:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Good question. I didn't mean to equate them in my statement. However, I would cautiously say that yes, a "knock-out" is going to be tall - there's a physicality to the term. However, a "hottie" (which might imply someone shorter) can be equally attractive.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:08 (eighteen years ago) link

That reminds me of this exchange from Newsradio:
Lisa: Alright, look I did not ask for the stupid award.
Beth: If I were you I'd be upset too. I mean you? Cute? Come on.
Lisa: I am not entirely uncute. I... I... Why are you being nasty about this?
Beth: I'm not being nasty. You're pretty. You're very pretty in fact. But cute, I don't think so.
Lisa: Well I wasn't aware there was a difference.
Beth: Well of course there is a difference. Pretty means pretty. Cute means pretty but short and/or hyperactive - like me.
Lisa: Uh huh. What is beautiful?
Beth: Beautiful means pretty and tall.
Lisa: Gorgeous?
Beth: Pretty with great hair.
Lisa: Striking?
Beth: Pretty with a big nose.
Lisa: OK, you're making this up.
Beth: That's ridiculous, why would I make it up?
Lisa: Voluptuous?
Beth: Pretty and fat.
Lisa: Sexy?
Beth: Pretty and easy.
Lisa: Exotic?
Beth: Ugly

On my last flight I had a stopover in Winnipeg and was seating next to this prairie FREAK that was 5'11, slim, racked, and THIRTEEN bloody years old. All the dudes incl. me would stare at her at first but then when they saw her face up close our brains quickly and uncomfortably exploded.

That's funny that the CEO is a perv - here teh guy who runs Happy Planet all-natural fruit beverages got the same charges, he looks exactly like the kind of halfway-hippie-but-still-moneyed-mook-at-heart look that a lot of dudes taking the ethical angle approach to getting bank + booty.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 August 2005 19:52 (eighteen years ago) link

american apparel -- all the ads seem to involve a girl with a pit stain or two. it'll get so much better when they start involving tampon strings hanging out all over the place.
