ok got myself a new ZX Spectrum 1128 K with the built in cassette jobby. if i tak ethe output direct to my tv or through my video to my tv - the tv strains to render the picture / th etype / the text whatever - it's like it's being overpowered or something. same wit any tv & any of these spectrums - it is a normal tv aerial style connection no fancy din or scart thing - do i need a special monitor? - a resistor in the signal path? i donut understand too much 4 my feeble mind i need heeelpppp

We have emulators these days.

As far as I can remember, all those old computers were just designed to plug straight into a tv RF socket; you shouldn't need a special monitor for them. Try adjusting your TV's brightness and contrast.

Yeah, I just used to plug my old 48k speccy into the telly, and it worked fine (both the telly and the spectrum)

thanks i ought to do that - i guess i haven't because it's somekinda handmedown tv you can only adjust the picture quality via the remote which is missing.
re: emulators. do i have to qualify my exasperation there?

is it simply a tuning thing? maybe that the channel the speccy is outputing on is too close to some other channel (mine used to be close to ch4 and with ch5 on the scene now i guess it's even tighter). iirc there's a little screw that'll let you modify, slightly, the output frequency for the spectrum.

you say it's the same with any tv and any other spectrum? are you using the same aerial lead, maybe thats what's knackered?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:36 (fifteen years ago) link

What country are you in? And what country did the spectrum come from? Sounds like the kind of thing that happens when you plug a PAL signal into an NTSC TV, or vice cersa, really.

fourteen years pass...

love the idea of someone pulling out a briefcase at a business meeting with a ZX81 in it with 16k ram extension cartridge, cassette deck and the worst printer ever made.

Ste, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 14:23 (eight months ago) link

a whole month of work was lost when someone accidentally nudged the 32k ram expansion cartridge and it crashed.

can anyone remember the Sharp MZ80k? Built in tape deck and monitor - type of machine you could really make the nerve-centre of your business!

calzino, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 14:54 (eight months ago) link

hah! proper bit of kit was that!

I can remember going to a computer club at the local community centre in the 80's which was just basically a hub of software piracy and violence. And saying that - copying games on a tape to tape deck there was usually a very slim chance of it working. There was a violent Scottish woman who used to wear slippers in the town centre and swear 50 times a minute. Someone borrowed some hardware off her boyfriend and broke it and she beat him up quite badly and pushed him down some stone steps outside!

calzino, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 15:03 (eight months ago) link

from what i can remember of the MZ80k was that all the games on it seemed to written in basic and utilising its own built in graphics/symbols set.

xp kind of like a mini version of the Commodore PET ? Getting 1970's goosepimples just looking at those pictures.

urgh I really want a retro looking keyboard with orange, black and white keys. Seems you have to buy a keyboard and then buy the keys separately but sounds like a great recipe for me breaking those said keys.

Ste, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 09:33 (eight months ago) link

also, what's with that small Return key?

Ste, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 09:38 (eight months ago) link

we all hate to see diminishing returns
