Your weekly burrito consumption

I realized today that since moving to the West Coast, burritos are the thing i most consume over a week's time, to about 5-6 per week. This can be attributed to the number of taquieras locally and to how I'm on the go all day for work.

How about you? How many burritos do you eat per week?

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

3 per month, maybe. I eat more tacos than burritos now.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:25 (fifteen years ago) link

On average, I would estimate that I eat about 1/4 to 1/2 of a burrito per week (2-4 per month).

However, I have a girlfriend and standards and she has standards as well.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:25 (fifteen years ago) link

One can't eat burritos for every meal. It's unseemly.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Besides, pizza.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

If frozen chimichangas count as well, six a week is pretty accurate.

I eat a lot more quesadillas than I do burritos. Quesadillas are my default "cooking drunk/late at night" meal.

Haha, I was drunk one night and so I went to Flash Taco, and was chowing down on my burrito when it occurred to me that the tortilla was a little different this time -- a little flakier, almost like phyllo. I was actually enjoying it until I looked down and realized I'd eaten half of the paper wrapper.

Geoff, you are thinking of something else! Which I only know because I stumbled past it (them?) drunk the other night while trying to catch a cab! I forget the name ... but you're right that it's near Ashland/Division.

Flash Taco = Damen/North/Milwaukee.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

I've gotten tired of burritos and hardly ever order them. Look at what the taqueria employees bring to the table on their lunch break: it's never burritos (usually rice, beans, corn tortillas, and some mole sauce or something)... that's very telling.

Maybe someday I'll get back into them, but I'm on a big tamale trip right now and burritos seems bland and hippy now.

andy --, Monday, 11 July 2005 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Less than one a month. Philadelphia is not a good city for Mexican food. All the Mexicans in kitchens here are busy making textureless pizza.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:34 (fifteen years ago) link

why not get a taco (or 3) or an enchilada or a chimichanga? the success of burritos seems like "gringos like when you put a whole bunch of shit all in one thing, regardless of how it ends up tasting."
i'm honestly puzzled.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link

four a week, made by me. when I go out for mexican I get enchiladas or something.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, lately I have gotten two or three tacos instead of a burrito. Although they def. pile in all that lettuce, beans, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream as much as they can onto a tiny corn tortilla.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

'Cuz burritos have built-in convenience that you get all of it in your hand, wrapped-up. You can't get that with enchiladas or chimichangas.

tacos are usually smaller, more numerous, and not as many kinds of ingredients(no rice, for example).

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:40 (fifteen years ago) link

things to avoid: refried beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole (although it has "good" fat), and any other dairy based sauces. Substitute whole beans and/or rice.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:42 (fifteen years ago) link

see exactly. rice should not be in a tortilla with meat and sauce and beans and sour cream and guac and whatever else is in the kitchen! it's convenient, but the tastes and textures don't mesh and the tortilla is always a soggy bleh mess.

i love burritos. i don't eat them that often really, maybe once a month, but i try to have some variety (and health consciousness, haha) in my diet. the last mexican food i had (thursday or friday) was a quesadilla with chicken, grilled jalapenos, and scallions.

oh yeah and as far as i can tell the mexicans around here (60 miles north of the mexican border) like burritos too and seem to have no problem with them being "gringo" food.
