When other people do it, I mean

Also, since 90% of people's attempts at conversation involve some variation of one or the other, is there any reason to interact with other people at all when not absolutely necessary?

I would incline towards complaining - because a lot of my mates ridicule the object of their ire and irritation quite amusingly. It's only possible to be humorous when 'bragging' if you're self-deprecating with it, which isn't really bragging, is it?

Will, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know anyone who brags, so I can't really comment.

Nick, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm trying really hard to become a grade A braggart. I'd rather bore people than annoy them. Or I could say something insightful instead. Haha...

Er Nick, you know me...

(see sports thread for confirmation)

I get annoyed with someone bragging if they have good reasons for it, because it makes me realize I have no gift to promote myself adequately at all. Justified whingeing is just ennerving, though...

Bragging is counter-revolutionary while complaining shows solidarity with your fellow oppressed workers, but if you make the same complaints continually about that darn elevator's so slow or the photocopier's jammed again, it must be monday! - basically turning yourself into a fucking walking Cathy comic - well, then you are an opressor too. But now I am complaining and must turn myself in for reeducation.

Unjustified bragging is the way to go.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I'm sick of complainers. Sick.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Unjustified bragging is good. Justified bragging is vulgar.

maryann, Monday, 10 December 2001 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Bragging about problems is the most annoying thing EVER. I prefer complaining.

their both about being insecure so whats the difference?

di, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Depends on the person, really, and how well they do either?

In general, probably bragging. I'm so sick of relentless negativity lately that to hear someone actually being positive about their life, even if it is bragging, would actually be a relief.

seventeen years pass...

it's 2019 and the internet seems to be equal parts bragging and complaining about other people

personally, if given a choice between the two i would rather read about people's successes than their kvetches. imagine what it would look like if people swore off complaining on the internet (about other people, about anything -- no complaining!) for 3 months/whatever period of time. the level of hostility in the air would be reduced substantially. maybe some plants would be able to grow on account of the additional oxygen.

"Shut up your dogs or I'll fucking behead them!" I screamed… and the rest of the building cheered / applauded for me.

lmao

difficult listening hour, Monday, 13 May 2019 20:44 (three months ago) link

do either imo, but be clever, entertaining or funny about it like me

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Monday, 13 May 2019 21:39 (three months ago) link

bragging definitely, it's depressingly common for people to be awful, rare for them to be awesome

Burt Bacharach's Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull (rushomancy), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 00:18 (three months ago) link

neither bragging nor complaining are a guarantee of fact ofc

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 07:14 (three months ago) link

People seem to have found a good sweetspot between the two.

FernandoHierro, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 07:22 (three months ago) link

have they

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 07:29 (three months ago) link

well in the sense that if someone fired a tennis ball at your head and it was very painful but they struck it sweetly
