I have red all four of the west riding quartet and I dont get the end of the third one, who is Martin laws and what are the three words that John piggot writes down. There seems a lot of unanswered questions as well such as who was his dad and why did he shoot himself. If anyone can help me understand I would be greatful.

Hi Big R

I agree with you they are confusing. Undeniably atmospheric but I think the plotting is poor. Here's my theories for what they're worth:

Martin Laws is a priest (defrocked after the Exorcist incident in which Jack Whitehead's wife died). However, he is also part of a paedophile ring which also includes George Marsh, Dawson the architect, and probably Piggot's dad who was a policeman. BJ the rent boy was one of their victims. I'm guessing Piggot senior shot himself out of shame or possibly having been found out.

No idea what the three words John writes when he kills himself, or the significance of the nail cutting or ring of salt round the bath. Could be some sort of occult thing?

Hope this is of some assistance.

naw, not yet - i'm in spain at the minute (red riding quartet was part of my featherlight escapist beach reading selection) but i'll track them down when i get home.

the casting looks largely great, although for some reason i'd imagined maurice jobson as a younger jim broadbent than david morrissey. i'll grant you tho that morrissey looks more capable of savagely mutilating a child-killer, right enough
