15th apr 2005: the holloway, holloway road
2nd time me and my exflatmate John went to this place. what a craic! the karaoke hostess was fantastic, loves her job, loves the stage, and she likes to perform. for sure.

She sang the last song of the evening, then did TWO encores. The last one of which was a parody of "Help yourself" by Tom Jones, in which she modified the words to say "Help yourself to my crotch, my tits and my arse just say the word", together with hand movements. It was clear that this was not an impromptu idea. Another immortal line "My crotch has room enough for two! (three!) (four!)"

we sang: Dedicated Follower Of Fashion - The Kinks (John and I did alternate "oh yes he is!" lines) This was right after a norwegian guy did "Waterloo Sunset". Basically we destroyed him.

and also: Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns 'n' Roses This was pretty phenomenal, we started pretty brightly, hitting all the high notes - by the end we ran out of breath a bit and had to resort to falsetto a little more. Disappointment came when we realised that in this karaoke version, the song stops just as the guitar solo begins, which ruled out the whole best bit of the song ("where do we go?? where do we go now?? aye aye aye aye aye aye where do we go now????") but probably good because that prevents me from singing out the final guitar solo part which would have been embarassing.

After that song, the norwegien guy looked at me and nodded in approval. I gestured the sign of the devil \m/ in return. Top night.

Summer 1997, Kos: Awaiting the departure coach to the airport, we took our cases to a bar to kill 30 mins. I put down to do "Ebeneezer Goode". Just as we were going to go, my name was called. So, I did a fairly knockout rendition, round the bar (wireless mike), out the front, street, back in again, finished song, grabbed cases and we went. "Elvis has left the frickin Island, pal"

Only time I've done karaoke - pretty classic: 199something, Sen Bar Melbourne. Did a duet of "Don't You Want Me" by the Human League with another guy from the IRC meetup I was at.

He proceeded to sing "Dont chew on me, baby" in the chorus, at which point I cracked up and lost it and couldn't finish my lovely atonal harmonies.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 21 April 2005 11:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Last time I did karaoke I did death metal vocals for John Farnhams "Youre the Voice". I also spent half the song twirling the mike by the chord and working on my stage presence. I got booed but I was so pissed I cracked myself up. I still cringe when I think about it to this day.

20th Apr 2005: A work night out to celebrate the end of six or seven 72-hour weeks. Our boss's boss is a big fan of Morrissey, so there's a prize for the best rendition of Every Day Is Like Sunday. Which isn't on the list. The vagaries of licensing etc means that there's twenty songs by Jewel, one by Morrissey (The More You Ignore Me..., which we eventually sing en masse), and none by The Smiths.

It was Japanese restaurant/sake bar/karaoke box, so we got a room (nearly a cubicle!) to ourselves. I opened by seizing on They Might Be Giants' Istanbul Not Constantinople as one of the few good non-singing songs (no Sultans WTF!!), then a bit later It's The End Of The World As We Know It, Johnny Cash's Hurt, Smashing Pumpkins' 1979 (my boss picked it and handed me the mic), and a bit of Don't Be Cruel. Unfortunately, we also picked random numbers inbetween times, and the only actual audio that escaped was my growling my way through Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. The enclosed situation meant the only embarrassing bit was when a GURL came in to ask if we had the two pages with the Abba songs (they were missing from our book too) during Love Shack (which we were giving full voice on the boy and girl tracks).

Other songs included Tie A Yellow Ribbon, Losing My Religion, Man On The Moon, Pump Up The Jam, Sweet Home Alabama, Centerfold (The J Geils Band one), Folson Prison Blues, Anarchy In The UK, and for a closer, the always terrible Light My Fire.

1991: Did a duet of Chirpy-Chirpy-Cheep-Cheep with a nice young blond boy.

Not only was this my first (and last karaoke), but it was the first time I heard Chirpy-Chirpy-Cheep-Cheep. Now there was a love that lasts!

I am not too funny about karaoke, I don't think, but you need to hang around in groups. In 1991 the young blond boy came with a group and I've never seen like it since. Holy fuck!

I'll never live down the time I did 99 Luftballons in German. Whenever I go out to karaoke here, they ask me to do it. But I don't want to. Last few times have been karaoke suicide, getting up there and realising I don't really know the song and not being drunk and uninhibited enough to pull it off improvisation style. I look forward to getting my karaoke mojo back.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Sunday, 24 April 2005 03:03 (nineteen years ago) link

last night after the bars closed we went to this weird rent-a-room karaoke place. I'd never been to such a place but we got a cozy little room with couches and our own karaoke machine. And the lady illegally sold us a bottle of Korean liqour which tasted like rubbing alcohol.

My personal highlights were Blur's Song 2, In Da Club and a good duet on Bus Stop by the Hollies with my friend.

I was once, drunkenly, made to sing The Nolans' I'm In The Mood For Dancing. Apparently I sing in an Inverness accent when drunk, like a female northern Proclaimer.

I think once in Cyprus I might have sung 500 Miles by the Proclaimers with my husband and got booed off the stage by a bar full of English football fans the night before England v Brazil in the last World Cup, upset that we weren't singing either Three Lions or Vindaloo. I think we misjudged how funny we thought it would be to be not supporting England. (we had been in the pub all day drinking hideous cocktails, in our defence, so my memories of this evening are so blurred they might not even have happened).

Summer 2004 in a rent a room karaoke place in Hong Kong

Most of the songs on the list were Chinese, and most of the english stuff were boybands, so I chose MmmBop by Hanson, only to realise (when the song kicked in) that I had forgotten the melody of the song.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 24 April 2005 10:31 (nineteen years ago) link

there's a melody in Mmmbop?

apparently so. I couldn't fit all the words in time.

I'm kinda glad that my only karaoke experience has been in a small room..
Or maybe I should listen to the Bon Jovi back catalogue in time for my next trip...

My last karaoke appearance was on St Patrick's night in an Irish bar in Majorca, where I performed "Lola" and realised that my range is not what it used to be. Still, it went down better than the time I did "Thong Song" in a bar full of middle-aged drunks.

For those Americans who think two posh white English guys doing hip hop sounds like torture, Mark and Alan are actually rather good at it.

I'd still rather see/hear Maria doing Suzi Quatro, though.

La Mexicana - Pontoon Beach, IL, Spring 2007

Matched girl with whom I have been friends for a very long time (and on whom I had at the time a major crush) Drink for Drink in some sort of ridiculous attempt at chivalry, not fully comprehending her magical ability to metabolize alcohol.

Did a rendition of "Rebel, Rebel" which devolved into angry, out-of-breath, atonal screams at anyone I knew in attendance. YOUVETORNYOURDRESS! YOURFACEISAMESS!

10 may 2008 - the research club, glasgow university

birthday party for the ex of my old glasgow buddy. the ex is now in the 1990s (a band). so it is with some trepidation, mitigated of course by the alcohol i've been necking, that i sing "harper valley p.t.a." by jeannie c. riley

somewhat later i do a disastrous version of "islands in the stream" - ATTENTION KARAOKERS: the timing of the chorus IS VERY DIFFICULT. also note that when performing a duet it is never good form to argue on stage over whose part is whose.

finally i achieve some sort of redemption with "your cheatin heart", which goes down to thunderous approbation

other highlights included Member of Famous Rock Band singing "Livin on a Prayer" and Member of Semi-Famous Rock Band doing a duet WITH HIMSELF of "to all the girls i've loved before", actually holding his own nose to achieve willie nelson effect

*This was originally supposed to be "Under the Milky Way," but the karaoke machine was messed up, so I went for my second choice.

i did "alison" by elvis costello. i was supposed to do "i touch myself" by the divinyls but some dudes stole my turn so i did "suffragette city" by david bowie instead

winner was the random dude who did "what a fool believes," maintaining his awkward michael mcdonald impression through the entire song without giving up

EXCEPTION: If you are dueting "Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing and you complete your argument when the girl shouts NO ONE PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER right before your last chorus. (see: Mar 24 2008 @ Mia's, Lexington, KY)
