Ant and Dec - s/d

I only caught the end of the FINAL EVAH chums, and was unprepared for the fact that this was their final SMTV. To atone for this ignorance, i sat through a truly awful CD:UK (Stereophonics! Mariah! Starsailor! num num).

I must admit i will miss them, evn though i only really watched for their pokemon related sketches. Do you have a PJ and Dunc single, did you like their sketch show on BBC/ch4? Weren't they crap on that recent BBC game show?

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

NOBODY will be allowed to post with "which one's Ant? is he the square headed one, or is that Dec?". a new answer if ever one was needed.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It depends on where they're put. They were rubbish on prime time, they rock(ed) on SM:TV, and they are really good on Pop Idol (go Rik). Dec hugged one of the wannabe girls when she was getting slated by nasty Simon. Awww. Bet he was just trying to cop a feel.

Will, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't have any singles by them, though I do have Psyche, Top Katz and The Cult Of... (blimey, THREE albums!)

Psyche is obviously their bestest album because it has Let's Get Ready To Rhumble, Our Radio Rocks, Tonight I'm Free and Why Me (=>is one of the BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME).

The Channel 4 show was a bit crummy and that BBC1 show wasn't too great but they're total class on Pop Idol.

My sister-in-law used to work with them and she said she was REALLY REALLY tempted to call them PJ and Duncan all the time but she managed to resist temptation. Apparantly they're the nicest people in the world.

jamesmichaelward, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I used to look uncannily like Dec.

Will, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I hate them both, they're as funny as Ebola and I cannot fathom why ANYONE on this board likes them AT ALL.

DG, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh no - are we going to get the DG Backlash....?

I think they have managed to juggle their audiences perfectly, and the reason why Slap Bang didn't work is that it did not have a formula (All good TV shows are based on an existing formula - you can then subvert that all you like cf Don't Forget Your Toothbrush etc.) The loose kids TV Zoo formula worked well for them because they are nice, childish and yet smutty. Double entendre works best when there is a whole section of the audience who aren't supposed to get it.

Pete, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dec is the one that looks like he should be Ant, quite simple really.

"When I Fall In Love" is, seriously, the greatest pop record of all time. NB the version GMTV's Hits 97 CD, the only such compilation I own, which according to destiny, is also one of Sara's ten CD's (She also has "A Tribute To Bon Jovi" = Identical royalty- free covers for playing in Poundstretcher)). I played the first 10 seconds at The Picnic In The Sky, before chickening out as it starts way way camper than I remembered (RickyT: "You're one fast DJ").

Aw, the last ever A&D SM:tv was a tremendous anti-climax, I thought. It's like they didn't realise how the significance of it all. I didn't want to have to sit through My Parents are Aliens and Sabrina the Teenage Witch - it should have been a huge three hour orgy of celebrity self-congratulation and teary-eyed nostalgia. The donk with the wonk didn't even put in an appearance FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE! Chums was good though.

Interesting attempt by Polly Vernon to write about A&D in the Guardian Guide on Saturday. I'm not sure she entirely succeeded, but it was nice to see someone trying to avoid that "oh-shucks-i'm- pushing-30-but-still-a-tweenager-inside" Heat-reader arrested- development cultural alibi, and actually try to say why a piece of mainstream pop culture was rich and strange. Certainly better than Zoe Williams on Buffy in the Guardian mag a few weeks earlier.

The burning question, of course, is can Finn-out-of-Hollyoaks be anything other than an embarrassing failure? I remain to be convinced, but, let's face it, the alternative is Dani bleeding Behr.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

aw, come on DG. DId you ever see the abusive berating of callers that was WONKEY DONKEY? funniest episode ever.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wonky Donkey always featured Ant & Dec ripping all kinds of piss out of callers. They rocked.

Kodanshi, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

DG, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Surely the ILE Christmas Party should have all Ant and Dec's games as tribute. "Challenge Mark S." - the shame of it! A 41 year old man beaten by a, uh, 27 year old man! And pen-and-paper wonkey donkey plus abuse.

Tom, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

would giant plastic foreheads be taking it that bit too far?

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah...Wonky Donkey, the memories...when contestants would always go 'is it a, um, flying...bird'. Cue apoplectic 'IT'S GOT TO RHYME!' Made my saturday mornings.

Bill, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Question is, how much of SM:TV do you revamp, and how much do you leave the same? This was always the reason given why the BBC (pre- Live & Kicking) used to revamp the entire show for a new set of presenters - including the name.

Cannot do any main A&D style sketches. So out goes Chums (no great loss) Dec Says, Cap'n Justice. Wonkey Donkey goes, Challenge Ant could be tweaked but best left alone. But must keep up similar kind of features. Must increase Cat's role in the program basically as she is now the star - not the sidekick (think early SM:TV which is how she was presented).

My advice. Urgent & Key to get Cat's best buddy Enid in from Capital Radio show as a female double act. No Louise.

Pete, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I watched the last one and laughed greatly, they are cheeky wee scamps and so are great and it was double entendre day which was ace. But it falls some way behind soccer am in my Saturday morning viewing. That is essential.

chris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In bed with a cup of tea and channel hopping between SM:TV and Football Italia Gazetta = one of life's great joys.

Will, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Of course the big coup the BBC had for the last SM:TV was the World Cup Draw. Not only the football but an entertainment spectacular. But I bet it ate into the ratings.

Pete, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Pete you mean EDITH and no thanks she is not pretty enough for Saturday mornings. Also she would distract Cat from the job in hand with her sapphic shenanigans.

But Fin from Hollyoaks aka James Redmond ROWR.

Emma, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But it has been proven by legions of kids TV presenters that we don't want attractive (Ant & Dec = not sexy) but intelligent fun. Certainly a Sapphic SM:TV would bring in the Dadz.

Pete, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes but the chicks must be purty, if you want to look at a past it old slapper on a Saturday morning try Dani Behr (or me if it was a big Friday nite, oh dear).

Emma, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

channel 4 show zenith - shaving kids heads for a laugh

Ant rappin, steppin stone, dec wiv floppy fringe - ahh the memories

, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

that "anty and deccy" where Craig Fairbrass was on and upset a punnet of plums, and then deccy ran around screeching "he slapped my plums!" was the funniest thing i have ever seen on a saturday morning. apart from RickyT's bedhead that is, hur hur :)

seven years pass...

The split doesn't seem very central - is there supposed to be an advert/another article further left or something?

(also lol etc)

if, Thursday, 3 September 2009 19:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think there must have been an ad on the left.

Shock confession my foot! Haven't these guys ever heard Tonight I'm Free?!

Windsor Davies, Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:40 (eleven years ago) link

Feel that it's worth clarifying that I was referring to the drugs thing. Tbh "ANT VOTED TORY" has kinda blindsided me

Well.

This fuckin guy (ant) is like Mr Google Trends. I swear, every damn day he's showing up there. "Ant celebrity" "Ant and dec ant" "Ant McPartlin" (I've even learnt the c*t's surname, something I'd have thought impossible)

Don't want another Moaty scenario for sure, though, personally, I hope he never appears on my TV screen again.

(Henry) Green container bin with face (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:07 (six years ago) link

i've found that the secret to keeping him off tv is not to watch anything he shows up in, it's worked pretty well for the last 20 years or so

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:08 (six years ago) link

I've not been following tbh, are things that bad?

Google lobster hierarchies (Bananaman Begins), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:08 (six years ago) link

Don't want another Moaty scenario for sure

not gonna lie, the thought of ant and dec and gazza has a certain appeal

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:09 (six years ago) link

I don't understand why people really loathe these guys as TV personalities. They were good on SMTV and the light entertainment stuff they've done since isn't designed for me so it doesn't bother me.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:11 (six years ago) link

yeah, they're fine with me - i actually kinda like that two adult males have had such a long and visibly affectionate friendship for so long, it's not something you see too often in the public eye

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:15 (six years ago) link

too many longs there, sorry

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:15 (six years ago) link

I wish he would take up drunken skiing in the Alps during avalanche season or base jumping on m-cat or something. He can fucking Rhumble off into oblivion for me, and the other twat!

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:22 (six years ago) link

I think you are overstating that slightly tbh. I generally just ignore celeb crap on here, it's only roughly once every couple of months I'll post something nasty.

calzino, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:23 (six years ago) link

Obviously there's worse people on TV, but I don't think being personable is that much of a talent tbh.

(Henry) Green container bin with face (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:24 (six years ago) link

And once you start drunkenly ramming into cars full of kids, well...

(Henry) Green container bin with face (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:25 (six years ago) link

I think they both voted for Cameron. Actually could picture the cunts going into the voting booth together.

calzino, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:28 (six years ago) link

Hey god speed to the lad idc, but this bit rubs me up the wrong way:

District Judge Barbara Barnes told McPartlin "you are a well-known and successful entertainer", whose weekly income is around £130,000 a week.

Sentencing him, she said: "At the time when it happened you were struggling with various personal problems and also alcohol issues for some months.

"This incident happened, sadly, when it seems you suffered a brief relapse."

Seems awfully nice for a judge to say. He should've said all this himself in first person, no need for a judge to add extra sympathy. Or would she say these nice things if it were a non-famous person too?

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:35 (six years ago) link

if it was a non-famous person who also earned £130,000? probably tbh

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:37 (six years ago) link

£130,000 a week i mean

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:37 (six years ago) link

You mean a rich person. Definitely.

(Henry) Green container bin with face (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 09:38 (six years ago) link

I think you could change the "and Whitey's on the moon" refrain in the Gil Scott-Heron song to "and Ant + Dec are on quarter of a million quid a week, jesus fucking wept, why?" and it would still be good.

calzino, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 10:00 (six years ago) link

I've always said, and so I'll say it again..

If you want a sympathetic ear from a judge, do drink-driving. Something about that has judges going "ahh, that could be me you know.."

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 10:03 (six years ago) link

^^ nails it

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 17 April 2018 10:06 (six years ago) link

Ant's a great guy apart from destroying wildlife in the name of entertainment, or laughing at the vulnerable and deluded on a Simon Cowell game show, or drink driving like a cunt, great guy.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 10:10 (six years ago) link

sort of related - someone I went to school with got done for drink driving, probably aged around 19 or 20, his dad was apparently a judge and the cops were fucking loving it that they nicked a judge's son. maybe because he kept letting people off for drink driving? dunno. That story is at least 3rd hand though, he wasn't a friend of mine. For all I know he could've tried a "my dad's a judge" attempt at getting let off.
