I need to fucking get out more.

EDB, Sunday, 8 July 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

We went to Fabric in the end, dull and clumpy for the first hour or so and got progressively better. Weird highlight was Petre Inspirescu dropping a significant section of Debussy's La Mer over some skeletal house.

Matt DC, Monday, 9 July 2012 10:06 (eleven years ago) link

usual fabric thing of not putting first guest on till after 4

was kinda underwhelmed by cobblestone jazz:/

coal, Monday, 9 July 2012 10:14 (eleven years ago) link

I've heard guests play earlier before, but that may have been years ago.

Matt DC, Monday, 9 July 2012 10:30 (eleven years ago) link

guests do play earlier it depends who tho, if its ricardo, zip or RPR it will always be later

two weeks pass...

http://wearetelegraphhill.com/londonpleasuregardens/site/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/GB-Poster.jpeg

Any thoughts on this? It's during my last week(s) so I don't mind spending extra for some kind of blowout.

last week(s) in London

Refuse to entertain anything at the London Pleasure Gardens again.

mmmm, Saturday, 28 July 2012 09:43 (eleven years ago) link

Been playing it safe recently, just Corsica Studios. Last Sat with Jay Shepheard and the Sat before with Michael Mayer. Mayer wasn't so good but Shepheard was really great.

mmmm, Saturday, 28 July 2012 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

what was lacking w/ mayer? i managed to persuade a bunch of visiting friends to go to beauty and the beat instead of that and they collectively had one of the best clubbing nights of their lives, RESOOLT and such.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 28 July 2012 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

What type of stuff is Mayer playing out these days?

Fred p today but can't go

coal, Sunday, 29 July 2012 10:09 (eleven years ago) link

last time i saw mayer i was very disappointed. might have been something to do with the shit sound and overcrowding though.

Right now I'm at fabric for dixon, shackleton, joy o, etc. and I am getting really good work done on my MA dissertation!

No joke! I wish I was this productive all the time, no less while writing on my phone.

ha, people have found it quite amusing that my notepad is full of scribbled moments of club inspiration. move the body move the mind.

emo mcgee vs ricky hitler (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 26 August 2012 05:16 (eleven years ago) link

Heheh, conversely people have been amused, but mostly baffled, seeing me reading academic essays during downtime at dance parties.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Sunday, 26 August 2012 05:25 (eleven years ago) link

Hooo... That was a fun 14 hours at Fabric. And yes, Moodymann did play Nirvana! (seconds after I walked into the room and passed someone wearing a Nirvana shirt...

― Hills Like White Broncos (EDB), Monday, October 24, 2011 1:25 PM (10 months ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Lol, last night Theo Parrish likewise played Nirvana.

So, the two and only times I've seen Detroit House DJs here they've both dropped Smells Like Teen Spirit in the middle of their sets. Am I missing something here?

formerly EDB (ed.b), Sunday, 2 September 2012 08:07 (eleven years ago) link

Laurent Garnier is also a well known abuser of that track. I'm not sure quite how I'd react to it, it was a "gateway track" for me, but hearing it hundreds of times in my misspent indie club years has massively dulled the appeal. I feel the same way about Out of Space, which is often used by DJs in a similar way.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 2 September 2012 11:55 (eleven years ago) link

i was at the dfa thing at corsica studios last night, and fucking hell was it ever packed and boiling. i gave it a go but getting enjoyment out of that environment was beyond me. wish i'd sold my ticket and gone headbang to theo instead.

tubular, mondo, gnabry (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 2 September 2012 14:41 (eleven years ago) link

If it's any consolation Plastic People was packed and boiling, too.

I just regret waiting until my last week in London to go to his monthly night.

Anything happening sep 13-24 and I do know about poptimism so that's already in the plan.

I am going to ask a question that may be met with raised eyebrows: anyone ever been to Slimelight?

(I rather like dancing to goth/EBM/industrial)

homosexual II, Sunday, 2 September 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

Don't expect to do much dancing, but I figure this will be potentially nuts, no?

I am so tempted by that on almost every level. AND YET: I hate Eat Shite; Become Shite so much that I would probably actually refuse to go to a night that had put them on the bill. :-/

i contemplate pantha du prince, efdemin, lawrence and redshape on saturday in ldn fields

lex pretend, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 11:43 (eleven years ago) link

roman flugel is there too! tempting but those big name lineups just scream 'roadblock' to me (lol old). i'm thinking about factory floor/peter gordon at the ICA on the same night, and/or juju & jordash at corsica on friday.

jabba hands, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 11:53 (eleven years ago) link

If I was still in London there would be NO question about that Dial night. That lineup could be in the 9th ring of Hell and it would still be amazing.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 12:06 (eleven years ago) link

I went to the Komische night. We stayed for Roedelius but could have done with some beanbags to lounge around on during the performance! After he finished we opted to leave for some house music so went across to Nomad. Never been there before, sound system not brilliant and odd crowd. There was a couple heaving petting in the middle of the dancefloor for at least an hour. It emptied out by 3 for Audio Werner who was really very good.

mmmm, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 12:19 (eleven years ago) link

heavy not heaving!

mmmm, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 12:34 (eleven years ago) link

i have tickets for the dial thing (a fiver back in july) but i'm mega-skint paying for a diploma at the moment, so i might pass, even the price of a drink or two is beyond my meagre budget.

it is an unbelievable lineup tho, and i could walk there in about 10 mins.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 12:38 (eleven years ago) link

how was the dial night?

J&J live were good but it was a fairly sparse crowd and the atmosphere was a little flat. tama sumo livened things up afterwards. factory floor & peter gordon the next night were really, really great.

jabba hands, Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

dial was good imo, the venue was decent, v v hot. tunes were good in fits and starts, half hour here and there, but overall a good vibe. flugel was v odd, he played what sounded like 05ish minimal stuff. efdemin played some great bits at times, and i think it was lawrence in the main room who was good.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

venue was good but waaay too hot and overofficious security running around like FBI men gone wild (running to close a window someone just opened?)

efdemin/roman flugel played different kinds of things, no particular coherent theme but was good in places
pantha du prince was actually not too bad, better than i thought he would be

lawrence was easily the best tho, tapered a bit towards the end but great otherwise

suare, Sunday, 16 September 2012 17:31 (eleven years ago) link

i felt guilty for bailing after being up for it but looks like it wasn't such a bad decision

lex pretend, Sunday, 16 September 2012 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

Corsica still continuing to oversell their nights

Is that just a programming issue, with a relatively empty Room 2 as often happens at Corsica; plain over-crowding; or are you talking about having to wait with pre-bought tickets because it's overcapacity?

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 September 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

sometimes lopsided line ups with empty second room, and sometimes just plain overcrowding - not had any problems with waiting to actually get in though

suare, Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, last time i was there the second room was like a pretty busy normal club while the main room was jam packed beyond any possibility of dancing.

tubular, mondo, gnabry (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

You just need to go to the nights no one wants to go to, like me. :D
