From the early 80s, I think, where the people of a small town get replaced by aliens. Their souls get contained in these floating blue balls and at the end I think the heroes (a mother and son, possibly) release them and restore everyone. And the alien ship is cylindrical with a sphere at one end.

Might be "Strange Invaders". That had a cylindrical vaguely 30s-esque alien spaceship-thingy in. And it was set in small town America with people being replaced...But aren't they all like that?.

If I were an alien wanting to take over the world, that's the last place I'd go, as they'd have to be ready for it by now.

Wasn't "Strange Invaders" set in Manhattan, at least partly? I remember a scene set near Columbia, at 114th and Riverside. And I don't remember blue spheres but it's been a while.

Almost positive it's Strange Invaders

Aha. Blue spheres right on the poster. The Columbia professor goes to the small town. I'd like to see this again.
