Marijuana: Classic or Dud?

Classic! The only safe drug known to humankind. The only drug that: 1) even if you're an addict, you don't mind sharing and 2) won't kill you.

shookout (shookout), Sunday, 14 November 2004 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Dud. And I wouldn't be so quick to call it 'safe' either.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 14 November 2004 16:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Classic for listening to music, taking a walk, getting busy.
Dud when it becomes a daily habit and you start thinking ancient Aztecs are sending you messages through indie rock songs.

Eep, that's no good. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

dud because it stinks and too many people I know do nothing but sit around and smoke weed and talk about smoking weed.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 14 November 2004 17:40 (fifteen years ago) link

classic! but like anything, not to be used to excess.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Sunday, 14 November 2004 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Classic if you like pot.
Dud if you're a pothead.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 14 November 2004 17:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Dud (assuming it's smoked) if you have allergic rhinitis.
Classic for getting into the actively passive state that is an ideal one for listening to music.

Not entirely harmless, but not bad in comparison to most other drugs.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I still like the smell even though I haven't smoked in several years.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Like Cheech Marin, I've given it up for salsa dancing, although in my case that's really kind of true. (Unfortunately, I haven't been doing that for a while either, but I expect that to change within half a year, if not sooner.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Or maybe that was Chong.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:11 (fifteen years ago) link

but like anything, not to be used to excess.

Indeed. My uncle was (and probably still is) a tremendous smoker, and this definitely had a hand in his daughter's learning disability -- the kid didn't speak until she was almost 4. All that pot done fucked with his DNA for reals.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link

king of the eyesores, my condolences. You can't choose how your zombified husband acts, but his bad choices are horrible for him and are going to force some extremely painful choices on you.

You need to decide whether you can live with him this way for the rest of your life. If you can't, then you have to decide where your cut-off point is. Then you have to make it absolutely clear to your husband where that cut-off point is and how much or how little you'll support him in making better choices and following through on them - but if he fails to make better choices, you'll cut him off. Then you have to act like you meant every word. That takes enormous strength - after all, you love him.

Aimless (Aimless), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Total fuckin' classic, but I'm sure my mind will be changed once I've "grown out of it" a bit...

I smoke marijuana almost daily; often multiple times per day. I like to play music while high, listen to music while cook, cook while high, eat while high, watch football (and baseball) while high. It is NOT conducive to me being a good student, however.

other things i like to do while stoned:

-fuck
-make out

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Dud, most of the time, for me. Unless it's supposed to be fun sitting around being shit scared to talk. And what gear said. And they even sit aruond smoking weed, talking about smoking weed, talking about the intricacies of rolling weed, listening to songs about weed... like a void of nothing.

Classic for getting to sleep, nice and easy. If that's what you want to do.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 14 November 2004 19:01 (fifteen years ago) link

dud to the point of abject fucking tragedy if you're one of several of my friends who are getting close to 40, and who've spent the last 20yrs of their lives with their main/only motivation being scoring & smoking it. Man, fuck that.

:| (....), Sunday, 14 November 2004 19:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I used to hate getting high and sitting there having no idea what the fuck everyone was talking about. So then I hung out sober and watched them smoke up. Guess what? I still had no idea what the fuck everyone was talking about.

And saying that music sounds better high is like saying ugly chicks look fuckable whist drunk.

Pot tasted like a dirty sponge, and I've also figured out that I don't need any more help being lethargic and sleepy. Dud for me.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Music sounds DIFFERENT when stoned. YOu hear all kindsa things you wouldn't ordinarily hear. It's cool. But, yeah, it can make bad music sound interesting. But that's kinda cool too. I don't really smoke a lot of pot. every blue moon. but i would never hang out with potheads. that sounds awful. i mean, i used to when i was younger. i hung out with lots of people i would run screaming from today. it's better as a substitute for booze in the safety of your own home with a goofy movie or t.v. show to watch or an entertaining record on the hi-fi.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:15 (fifteen years ago) link

(the kind of pot smoker that doesn't even tell people they smoke pot. The people you would never even GUESS smoke pot. they are the cool ones.)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

DUD in every way except for some good music having been made under its influence.
still, you gotta wonder if that isn't cancelled out by even larger amount of crap music...

used to be classic, now total dud. anxiety, fear of people looking at me, fear of mirrors, fear, fear, fear. and flashbacks, believe it or not.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i used to get horrible panic attacks from pot when i was younger. i come from a long line of panic attack sufferers. my brother used to smoke every day and he would call the ambulance when he thought he was dying. so, i stayed away for years. when i was older i tried it cuz i was bored and it wasn't bad at all. i just don't feel the same. so, in my teens i could smoke pot: no biggie. but my 20's: no way. 30's: kinda nice every once in awhile. (hell, 2 or 3 times a year is enough for me.)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

dud, for same reasons as scott suggests: doesn't go well with anyone who has ever suffered from any kind of anxiety...

I guess i don't get why the DEA, as opposed to the FDA, needs to concern itself with whether it's classified as a medicine of any kind. There are tons of things we ingest besides medicines that are not in their purview. I guess both the DEA and FDA are involved in the schedule classification, and since it's deemed a drug it has to be placed somewhere in their lineup? I'll listen to the interview later on though.

Silence, followed by unintelligible stammering. (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 13 August 2016 04:02 (three years ago) link

The guys says it's actually the HHS that determines schedules, not the DEA. Stuff on schedules around the 4-minute mark in the interview. Catch-22 stuff is that the reason it is considered schedule 1 is because it falls under the category of "the drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical treatment use in the U.S.," which is complicated because even though marijuana *is* being offered medically in several states it's really still doing it extra legally.

The takeaway is basically that it is very unlikely that marijuana will ever be classified a medicine in the US, but that after it is (eventually) legalized on a federal level here it should get tacit FDA approval (as such) on the same tier as stuff like vitamins and other supplements. That is, the FDA will not give its imprimatur and vouch for its not scientifically consistent claims as a medicine but will allow it to be sold with the usual printed caveats. It all sounds sort of roundabout and catch-22-y, but the biggest hold up in FDA approval seems to be its illegality on a Federal level, yet once it is made legal then the FDA approval will be made moot.

Sounds to me like Obama admin has its finger to the wind and is just waiting out the clock, a la marriage equality.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 August 2016 04:12 (three years ago) link

Part of my takeaway is about the specific comments on it being a potential drug of abuse (ie getting high) - other than alcohol (though everything there revolves around 'responsible use' despite making things like Fireball that exist only to get 19-year olds fuckin' hammered), we're still hamstrung culturally by this idea that it's wrong to get high.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 13 August 2016 06:00 (three years ago) link

But no one is trying to classify alcohol as an FDA approved medicine, dangerous as it can be.

two weeks pass...

the pure CBD oil does seem a little relaxing but nothing mindblowing - taking some did calm

Tried a hash oil that's 78% CBD/8% THC through a vaporizer - very strange, definitely some body relaxation (like a mild muscle relaxer) and a mental calm without feeling 'high.' If weed ever becomes legal, this kind of combo will become incredibly popular.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 05:31 (three years ago) link

where do you hail from milo? so weird that weed is just straight up illegal almost everywhere. i'm in WA state, and I'm right on the border of OR too, so there are just...stores. weed stores everywhere. they sell all manner of everything and I haven't even been in one yet because you need a photo ID to get inside, I just send the missus in like she's stopping by the grocery for milk. so !

of course we aren't living in any kind of mad max scenario everything is fine.

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 2 September 2016 08:44 (three years ago) link

speaking of the missus she quite likes the "CBD"s because they help with her migraines, may have to look into this pure CBD oil business

I guess we've come a long way from "here's a baggie of whatever is is, good luck"

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 2 September 2016 08:48 (three years ago) link

From what I've read, that kind of a percentage of CBD seems really high...I thought about 5% was about where that tops out in traditional strains.

calstars, Friday, 2 September 2016 11:54 (three years ago) link

It's very high, but once the stories came out about CBD and epilepsy/etc. it seems like breeders managed to encourage high CBD quite quickly. There are other strains that are more like 1:1 by bringing down THC levels to 9-10% and bringing up CBD to that level.

i live in a shitty state (OH) so this is still what we've got, though the quality of whatever is in the baggie has increased considerably since i first started buying weed in high school

OH almost legalized rec last year but it was a weird monopoly w/ a restricted # of growers (though still allowed home growing iirc) and was voted down, we also just passed a shitty medical bill

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:31 (three years ago) link

Reading about all the things that exist in OR/CO/WA is crazy. Here's an e-cig juice that will get you high if you want the easiest route, or here's some pot with the actual THC/CBD/etc. characteristics tested or here's edibles/wax/etc..

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:45 (three years ago) link

yea it is truly wild, i do wonder whether more widespread legalization will eventually come with some heavier restrictions on what can be sold

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:46 (three years ago) link

Edibles probably need to be regulated more than anything else - Maureen Dowd had a column about eating an entire chocolate bar and getting way too high, it's not uncommon in the legal states apparently. The guide Dowd used says he told her that the bar was meant to be split among multiple people but the package didn't say that.
