Goths are nasty people who need a wash and smell of Patchouli, a lot like hippies really, and you know my opinion of hippies. Funnily enough though one of ny best friends the G was a complete Goth, I've seen the pictures of him in black, leather, hat and full flour effect. I've forgiven him.

and Mark S, to answer that one , yup, turn a goth upside down and they become instant hippies, it's true.

Stuff I don't have in common with Goths: I don't do Class A's, smoke Djarms clove cigarettes, have anything pierced or tattooed, am not terribly obsessed with death and don't much care for horror films, industrial music, or God v. Satan and I have never fleshed out every single marker of all that is Goth by authoring fan fiction, cough cough, Drusilla ;).

Horror films: mmmm I want to see CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST.

Fashion nightmare, but quality pop songs sung in a deep voice. I was a goth for a few years and am amazed I never got beaten up. I wore an arm full of bangles, purple tye-dye shirts and pointed suede boots. I certainly deserved a beating.

The thing with ALL subcultures, not just your Goths, is putting on that superiority schtick is their (immature, intellectually bereft) way of reconciling themselves to the fact that 99 per cent of people don't share their interests and think they dress funny, to boot. There's more to being different or creative than relative to 'the normal' or in blatantly reactionary terms. Most of the British Goths I have met come from net-curtain homes and whinge all day in Estuary-speak (this voice, when talking about decadence, puts me in mind of Readers' Wives sections of yer top-shelf jazz mags). The American ones are all middle- class because at least when I was growing up you needed time and money to source all the lifestyle accessories. Most of them grow out of it and don't really make such a mark in the world.

Poppy Z Brite, however, is ACE. I commissioned her to do some work for this project of mine and she hooked me up, completely unbidden, with her literary agent. Now THAT is pure class.

Anyway, I dunno about estuary accents either, see goth haven WHITBY.

Yeah, all of the proper goths girls I knew would spend hundreds of dollars on boots or custom leather corsets.

I was never really properly goth in that sense, never had the money or the inclination to dress up like that. I would just wear loads of black, but I really always looked more like an indie boy than a goth girlie.

I dye my hair black, own lots of black clothes and have tattoos but shudder at the term goth. I have matching pin-up girl red nails and lips so hopefully this disqualifies me?

Wow... we are finally taking a stand against the chavs! I can't say it was a very good way of doing it though, beating up a guy who did nothing to them first.

Right i dont wish to take sides especially because i knew neither of these people personally HOWEVER every day the chav culture affects our society in a negative way, theres an increase in gun crime and knife crime surprise surprise its the dickheads wearing tracksuits that do it, they form street gangs to make shitty music about each other in there bedrooms and wait for a reply so they can use it as a reason to engage in violence, they vandalise my neighborhood and smash all the cars in the street up, they spend there lives smoking weed and trying to impress people with their machetes and guns and illegal dogs, they have no aspirations and no will to benefit this country in any way shape or form and they dont care about anybody but themselves probably due to emotional distress which has lowered their confidence and left them with an easily influenced pathetic mind pattern. on top of this they frown upon anybody who reads kerrang magazine or listens to any music promoted by kerrang because it promotes the use of musical instruments that they dissaprove of because theyve been easily influenced into believing they'll get more respect from other chavs by listening to shitty homemade bedroom MC's. now i'll give my opinion on the most likely happening of the night, the chav started shouting abuse at the goth for wearing different clothes and not wearing a cotton nike air max tracksuit the chav then swore at the goth and because the goth is sick of the little unemployed drug taking dick head chavs ruining the country he lost his temper and kicked the chav to death, personally i'd love nothing more than to see this happen to every single chav in the country and i hope it hurt.

i went to a goth party last friday, and it was very strange but kind of fun. they played an entire Christian Death album, and some old-time Bauhaus shit, then it sort of went the way of 80s-postrock dance party, which is not inherently goth, but pretty good nonetheless.

- What I admire about that 'gothopotamus' person upthread, and the other person in the photo, is that the look transcends what they've got to work with physically. There's a dark, glamourous ideal that they're going for, and, whether or not that's a good ideal, the devotion to it against all the odds (short fat male w/ eyeliner for example) is surely Classic.
