get a Radio Times for Peel's sake!

Heat is simply trying to protect its readers from scary big words.

Scary big documentaries too...

it's art... but will the public understand?

I love BBC Four at the mo. It's pretty much the only channel I can tolerate for more than 5 minutes now (unless there's football on...).

I was just thinking how good it would be to have a programme called The Hour or something which just flies through that week's most interesting new music videos, viral web things, tv adverts, computer games, events etc. at high speed packing as much in as possible into that 60 minutes (with no adverts) from a broad range of scenes, genres, cultures. No visual presenter, just narrators, Trans World Sport style.

Just like that video update on the current culture that the minister was supposed to watch in 'The Thick Of It' (current fave BBC4 show)

mms (mms), Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:59 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

I thought that was a whole tape of actual programmes, but yeah I did think of that as well. Zeitgeistic.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:18 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

wasn't 'Movies, Games and Videos' similar (but smaller), back in the day? isn't there a dvd like this given away with some newspaper or other every month? (girl on advert is gina bellman from black eyes and coupling, can't remember the paper). what's that thing the Wallpaper guy does on bbc4? always mean to watch it but never do...

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:15 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

it's the fkn times or sunday times. so it's everything fox and affiliates have done, rather than a total round-up.

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:20 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

Something like that on the Beeb with a decent producer could be excellent.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:26 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

'Movies, Games And Videos' was so inane though. And American. I also had 'The Month' DVD in mind but it's too mainstream.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:30 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

I mean a one hour music magazine on it's own would be good but dipping too much into contemporary pop culture as you would have to there isn't highbrow enough for BBC Four and not lowbrow enough for BBC Three, annoyingly.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:31 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

Sounds a lot like 'Passengers' like what used to be on Channel 4 in the 'The Word' slot.

Whatever happened to BBC4's 'The Late Edition'?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:40 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

the writing team offed themselves, justifiably.

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:43 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

do you like football, stevem?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:56 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

Passengers was more of a culture mag tho, not actually focussing on the art, or just showing you things (ideally narration would be minimal, maybe even just text-based ala The Chart Show). It would have to be an amalgamation of all of these things and more (see also Content presented by Tony Wilson, er, minus the blabbermouth natch).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:59 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

four years pass...

is there another heat mag thread? reading mark friths celeb diaries at the mo. curiously reads a lot like the celeb biogs out there - looks like its going to be quite revealing but ultimately isnt. more interesting for the bits about the mag and publishing world more than the celeb stuff. seems quite light on opinion about the celeb world too (though i have about 100 pages left) or the debates around it, though i suppose this isnt really the place for that. i suppose libel might have had something to do with it but its not as gossipy as i thought it would be.

Good!

seems quite light on opinion about the celeb world too

Hray!

Mark G, Thursday, 29 October 2009 11:17 (nine years ago) Permalink

well at times it seems like hes willfully ignoring the questionable side of the whole celebs/decaying culture etc thing to put forward his own position as heat editor. which is totally understandable obviously. but it just seems a bit lightweight. and the fake-oh-god-what-a-mistake judgements/mistakes which all seem to get sorted out by the next page are a bit LOL. cant stop reading it though. so frith is obviously winning.

but then the other book im reading is a fine balance (good but grim).

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 29 October 2009 11:27 (nine years ago) Permalink

Can't believe the Heat editor's Celeb Diaries book is a bit lightweight tbh

Erol "Bomber" Alkan (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 29 October 2009 11:28 (nine years ago) Permalink

Mark G, Thursday, 29 October 2009 11:30 (nine years ago) Permalink

not up to that bit yet.

im planning on reading the marina hyde book but imagine itll be a bit pious.

He's a bit much, I'll give you that. Still not as bad as, top of my head, Neil Oliver, Tony Robinson, the boy Cox. Maybe a poll in this, on another day.

im not allowed criticise cox in the house soz

topical mlady (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 21:58 (one week ago) Permalink

Duly noted. Cox isn't the word of my list tbf

Oh god Paxman, don't know know if he should count but he's probably the worst of any cunt who hasn't presented Top Gear

For a guy that spends a lot of time on a board called ‘I love everything’; do you like anything?

None, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen you express a positive sentiment about anything ever.

it's like Lloyd Grossman joined the priesthood after the botulism scandal and started wearing a fucking cowboy hat.

calzino, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 22:33 (one week ago) Permalink

lol, it's hard out there for a "commoner" with a detached 5 bedroom house in the middle of a national park.

calzino, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 22:45 (one week ago) Permalink

Bartlett always seemed authorative and interesting on medieval history but I haven't seen him in anything for years now. That fucking mediocre poshboy cock Dan Snow (great grandson of Lloyd George) has been hogging all the bbc history programs and he's just making more fucking forgettable wallpaper.

Noodle pretty clear on the merits of given Mancunian rap artists iirc

loving everything would mean loving death, disease, war, hitler, russell howard, michael gove etc... so I surmise that hate is not without merit.

Noodle also squeals like a 15 yo girl over Nuno Espírito Santo iirc. He's got love to give, Ed.

In fairness, Paxman was last good about as far back in the past as MC Tunes.

Matt DC, Thursday, 10 January 2019 10:11 (one week ago) Permalink

lol I saw MC Tunes live in 1990 at the Sheffield Octagon with 808 State/K-Klass, and I can confirm I've never heard Paxman imploring a crowd to "fuck the babylon (sic)".

calzino, Thursday, 10 January 2019 10:23 (one week ago) Permalink

also pretty sure Tunes could do a better documentary on the British Empire than Paxman
