Also, off-site, my conversations with nakh are often disorientingly educative. I don't know if people here really know how much information that guy absorbs on a daily basis.

There have been many influential posters over the years, but the one that I think has had the greatest effect on my life is this little nugget from the running running thread:

Had been thinking about starting again tomorrow. Got a wild hair about it, the stars are aligned, whatever. But the forecast is for 95 degrees. I might go through with it anyway but goddamn.

"rip ― lag∞n" goes through my head now every time I start to flake out about my health and self-care. I still don't always make the best choices, but this little phrase has helped me more times than I can count and I am on a slow but steady path of improving health and fitness. hopefully will get where I'm going before I die.

lagoon is a great guy

Treeship, Friday, 13 October 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link

From what I know through ilx and social media at least.

Treeship, Friday, 13 October 2017 15:37 (six years ago) link

There are so many here. So many, and I'm worried about missing anyone but off the top of my head:

Sick Mouthy offered me my first writing gig back in 2004
Branwell, despite falling out with me a huge number of times, did make me reassess my position on a number of issues. That could be said for other ilxors, Lex, DJP and many others.
FGTI gave me some fantastic advice about songwriting once which I'll never forget
And then there are those who have either inspired me a great deal, offered advice and opinions, or just helped me in my life with friendly encouragement, among them Le Bateau Ivre, imago, Rev, Ned, marcos, wins, NickB, chewshabadoo, M4rk H3st3r (can't remember what handle he goes by now), Johnny Fever, man alive, Kerr, Gravel Puzzleworth, seandalai, Moka, emil.y, Michael B, Drugs A . Money. Like the latter says upthread, the Outloud chats were so so great and I miss them a lot

So many more.. I've been on here for 18 years now so...

lagoon also convinced me to stretch before lifting and that was helpful

god, Treeship and flopson and Karl Malone too. I don't interact with them directly much on here but their posts all seem to either be really reasonable, insightful or funny and it's influenced me to at least try not to just write any old shit on hear (I still do though)

i keep writing tl;drs (true love doctors) here and then deleting them, so instead this is the quick summary: ilx is more of a "community" for me than just about any irl community. in certain ways that is endlessly rewarding, and i don't even want to know how many times i click the ilx bookmark everyday. it is weird. it's too much. when i think about transformative effects it's not so much one person or group of people that i think of, or a specific thread, but just the overall influence of what i'm reading and thinking and talking about all the time with you all. true <3 doctors

with all that said, big ups to pplains. dr casino said something about pplains' "finest hour" on the steely dan thread today, and my first thought was "more like pplains finest year, with 8760 one-hour blocks, each one featuring a pplains greatest hit. god, 8760 hours isn't really that long for a year, i really expected the number to be higher."

also: if you're having a bad day and need something to lift your spirits, check out the only song by The Bonzai Predicament. it is really good:

seriously, put that song on if you're ever feeling down. i just listened to it for the 4th time today and literally spilled coffee all over myself and my couch

Every day is a good day for Johnny Logan. Go ahead and fp me Deems, you only need 31 51 socks to make it happen.

Horseshoe (miss u, lady) specifically because she talked somewhere on board about body positivity and HAES and posited that dieting might be unhealthy. For someone who had an eating disorder in the past and who has been on a diet pretty much constantly since I was 10, being introduced to these ideas was nothing short of life changing.

Feel bad now for fooling around because that is one beautiful, sincere post.

Horseshoe is great

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Monday, 30 October 2017 20:07 (six years ago) link

Aw, don't feel bad! I meant to post that here last week but realized I didn't. It was such a big deal to me at the time (this was like 2010 ish) that I wrote to her separately and she sent me all kinds of reading recs and it was a really big thing for me.

I'm not sure if she's gone but I haven't seen her post in a while but I don't really post very much these days so idk.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 30 October 2017 20:08 (six years ago) link

I'm also going to say Odysseus for dragging me out to regularly participate in things like chat and plug and reading philosophy, through which I made irl friends. Also, the mid-00s metal polls introduced me to contemporary avant- and post- black metal, which became a regular part of my listening diet.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 30 October 2017 20:29 (six years ago) link

Don't want to be nasty and there some assumptions coming up on my behalf but, if by 'A***' you refer to Horseshoe: there's probably a reason why she *never* used her real name on ilx and would probably prefer for it to stay that way?

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 30 October 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

her name isn't abby?

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 30 October 2017 23:33 (six years ago) link

anyway that's now how she spells it but yeah maybe not use her name
