this is not a celebrity but i've been working on a video project for somebody and we had to do some last minute work today and at the end of it her coworker made us a nice meal. during dinner they dropped the info that he had a bit part in "Murder in Coweta County", the 1983 made-for-tv movie staring Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash. he never actually met them but he did go to the premier party and Johnny and June Carter Cash were there. so that's pretty sweet.

We had about a dozen program directors in my 11 years at the radio station. My favorite one was this older guy named Jimmy. Kind of a shorter fella, kind of a rugged Bob Costas thing about him, if you can imagine something so crazy. Brass pipes that sounded just as sonorous in his office as it did on the radio.

He was always vague about his background, just listing a bunch of WXXXs and KXXXs real fast if asked. He once said how "the boys" used to love a big yard he had back in Virginia, but never mentioned them again. But one time, he let it slip that he had played the bad guy in an 80s made-for-TV movie starring Mean Joe Greene.

Say the fuck what? This was 15 years ago, so with an hour of searching online and an hour of waiting for the video to buffer, we finally found some clips. Apparently, the plot began soon after the moment in the Coca-Cola commercial where MJG throws his jersey to the kid. There's Jimmy, with 80s porn stache, walking in on MJG in the locker room, admonishing him for giving up the jersey. "You should've never given away that property. It's worth a lot of money. For someone as washed up as you, Joe, with his better days behind him, that money might be worth something."

"The jersey belongs to the kid now!" says Greene, as he storms out of the room.

(Looking this up on imdb, I guess Greene tries to adopt the kid? That's one way to get your jersey back.)

My co-workers and I stared at the screen. What the fuck is this? Who is this guy? On cue, Jimmy comes down the hall, sees what we're watching. "Oh you finally found it, huh? Now put that away. We've got Bert Sugar calling in!"

So like Adam, maybe this post doesn't belong here. But then again, maybe it's Jimmy who's the real celebrity here.

I was sure for a moment that you were making up this idea of a movie based on a Coke commercial, but...

Kenneth Cranham got on the (17) bus about halfway down Cally Road this morning. Wasn't sure it was him until he started having a very raucous actorly phone conversation peppered with ironic 'darlings', unfortunately I had to get off just as he was starting an anecdote about having to brush up his Scottish accent which involved Brian Cox.

Oooh, Tennant and Lowe, interesting!

Is Karen O'Leary a famous person?

Mine was talking to Billy Bragg and finding he was, disappointingly given the abuse I've given him over the years, quite a nice bloke.

i.e famous enough for me to have been aware of her back in Britain and enough to consider her a celeb now I'm in NZ.

At least Mackenzie Crook level if that helps.

Only for the summer/winter depending on your perspective. (Which is why I guess it's a celeb thing, coming from outside.)

Humour is a bit more Wellington-centic but it's pretty funny.

Same set up as their roles in the film, Minogue and O'Leary are oblivious to what's going on around them.
