Addams Family vs The Munsters

Incredible. TV found room for both of these weird sitcoms about happy, but perversely oriented families in the mid sixties and I was just wondering which one was a copy of the other. I have seen nearly all of the Addams Family shows, but never really got turned on to the Munsters. Does this make sense?

Sorry if this has been done before, but I coudn't find a thread.

Aw shit this is the ultimate throwdown!

Addams Family by a mile! Any naysayers can suck it!

Munsters. They had a cooler car and no cruddy '90s comeback movie.

Munsters: better theme music, though the Addams finger snaps were cool.
Addams: better characters and funnier scripts.
Addams Family by a fur piece.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 15 August 2004 01:24 (eighteen years ago) link

is there even a discussion needed??

Addams Family had Yvonne DeCarlo in that shroud, Lurch, Hand, the indelible chracter of Wednesday Cousin It, Gomez (with a brilliant performance by John Astin) Cousin It (ok Pugsley always sucked) and that theme song.

Thanks to Charles Addams' brilliant cartoons a whole new family was born that, while drawing on archetypal horror images, slanted them anew. Loving, ooky and kooky.

The Munsters offered up a slight take off on Universal Films Horror characters that never brought much to those and functioned as much more than a one note gag.

(I may be biased by having fallen in love in my impressionable youth in Ethiopia with a collection of short stories in my school library based on The Addams Family. Following that, I discovered that the great aunt of a college friend having dumped Charles Addams served as his 'inspiration' for Morticia which just made me even more enamored with the show as I tried to imagine this woman as Morticia.)

The Addams family IS easily one of the greatest shows ever. But I did enjoy the munsters as a kid. It was broader and goofier and cheaper, kinda. But it was funny too. And even though Marilyn was kind of a dud it was funny that they all thought she was ugly. And Herman was a hoot. He was so gay!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 15 August 2004 01:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Morticia Addams was married to Aaron Spelling!

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 15 August 2004 02:12 (eighteen years ago) link

well, i only knew this from my friends family legend (and great aunt was believable as an inspiration) but isn't Aaron Spelling, old as he is, a bit young to have been married to the inspiration for Morticia?

of course i could check if she had at some point been married to Aaron tho I doubt it

H (Heruy), Sunday, 15 August 2004 02:20 (eighteen years ago) link

He was married to Carolyn Jones.

Munsters all the way! I never could get into the Addams family as a kid. Gomez creeped me out. I didn't like him.

The Munsters had the better theme song.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Sunday, 15 August 2004 03:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Addams Family had Yvonne DeCarlo in that shroud, Lurch, Hand,

Hand was actually named Thing. and Addams Family was way better. Much darker and funnier at the same time. So many great characters: Uncle Fester, Lurch, Cousin Itt. and the comic strip rules too.

Joseph Pot (STINKORâ„¢), Sunday, 15 August 2004 04:29 (eighteen years ago) link

The Addams family was superior, I always liked Cousin Itt and Thing. The Munsters I can't really remember, just that Frankenstein was in it and he kinda reminded me of the dad in Roseanne.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 15 August 2004 12:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't really argue against all the reasons why the Addams Family was the superior show (and there WAS a modern Munsters comeback, TV and film (probably a TV movie, I think), and they were incomparably worse than the Addams movies), but for me, I so liked two of the performances in the Munsters - Al Lewis as the vampire Grandpa and especially the great Fred Gwynne as Herman - that I always preferred that. They were both great, though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 August 2004 15:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, John Schuck (sp?) played Herman in the remake. Of Holmes & Yoyo fame.

the addams family was one of the most fantastically subversive and hilarious things ever to hit the air (gomez = my hero!); the munsters were a bland sitcom family posing as ghouls. that said, fred gwynne was awesome and saved the latter show from total mundanity.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:53 (eighteen years ago) link

The Munsters has some great things going for it:
*Best TV Theme ever, written by Mr Vic Mizzy, who also wrote the themes for The Addams Family and Green Acres & Petticoat Junction AND Ghost & Mr. Chicken.
*Al Lewis
*Bitchin hot rod.
*Worst jokes and laughtrack conceivable. Case-in-point: "Munster, Go Home" .. When Grandpa takes a horse, he's holding on tight as it gallops along - and he says, "The next time I steal a horse, it's gonna have HANDLES on it." WTF? Awesome. And the gear shift lever in the car had the gears labeled as "1, 2, GO-GO"

The Addams family was probably a better show, objectively, but The Munsters is more fun to talk about.

MUSTERS all the way!!! Yyvone Decarlo (who was LILY MUSTER BTW!) was way better than Mz Aaron Spelling. Plus Cousin Marilyn was a FOX and Fred Gwyne and Grampa Al were and still are hilarious as all fuck. Gomez/Fester couldnt compare. Fred Gwyne > John Astin

the funniest scenes on either were between Gwynne and Lewis on The Munsters, but Addamses were generally more sophisticated even tho it was sitcommed up from the Chas A vision.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 16:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I think an R-rated remake of the Addams Family on HBO, :30 episodes, Morticia's plunging necklines and Lurch decapitating salesmen, would be good.

OG Addams TV shows are amazing. Gomez standing on his head while smoking a cigar, 'Tish plunking away atonally on an exotic stringed instrument, etc. The episode where Lurch accidentally becomes a teen rock idol by grunting over chamber music. All of it, so so good.

The movies are great in spite of the lazy plots and have the best casting ever, almost better than the TV show.

pitch yer scripts here

...the 2017 twist is... the Munsters will be living in Brooklyn.

According to Deadine's Nellie Andreeva, the single-camera remake (not the first attempt to bring it back to life) is now in development, and "follows members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn."

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Friday, 16 July 2021 15:52 (one year ago) link

From the first moment I saw the show, I hated Eddie Munster. I also hated the bland, 'nice girl' daughter who was the 'normie' thrown in so the writers could play around with a bigger variety of plots; she was so bland and awful she basically disappeared on the screen like a black hole from which no charisma could escape, so the writers wisely tossed her overboard in most of the episodes.
