British People who just dont get America at all

i read an argument, very recently, that everett trues fetishization of olympia must have required a degree of airbrushing of poor people out of picture. to fetishize olympia is to not get america at all, a schoolboy error on the part of the eager young brit there

but, surely, this is not the only time a brit has not got america. there are thousands!

some of them committed by people on this board. one or two of them by me.

but, what are they?

Christopher Hitchens: cravenly mistook the Merkin Revolution for the French.

some british attitudes to americans (for mark who has apparently been living in a cave): they all voted for bush, they are all extremely right wing and expansionist, they all own suvs, they have the ethics, greed and refusal to accept personal responsibility of spoiled toddlers, they are all brash, overfriendly and loud, they expect all countries to supply them with specifically american products and foodstuffs, that's if they bother travelling at all, they are endlessly and pettily litigious, they are vulgarly obsessed with money and profit, they are fat, they have a uniquely strident sense of entitlement, they are racist.

i exoticise and romanticise the USA/'America' to an extent that is perhaps unwise or just daft (tho we say that about Anglophiliac from over there too). i wouldn't say i was disappointed with the reality at all, but, and this is priceless, everything was smaller than i imagined (or perhaps was just used to imagining from childhood days)

Annoyingly I can't find a shot of the edition featuring "I'll rot in hell before I give that little bastard a quote for his book" Julie Burchill

With all the complaints about Americans having no sense of the world outside their own borders I'm flummoxed at the thought of having to explain where Minneapolis is to Brits while being heartily congratulated for knowing the difference between Bradford and Bicester, and where each is located.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Surely it would be worse if you weren't congratulated, IE if you were expected to know where Bradford & Bicester were.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 17:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Also well done you!

I think I've lived here long enough for the knowledge to have seeped in, and there's nobody like an American Smiths fan for knowing Britain's nooks, crannies, crap towns etc.

but this is all true! however the rest of the world is just as obsessed with money and profit as america is, if not moreso.

Americans, British. Sure, you're both lovely.

Now come on over here to Ireland on your holidays. And bring plenty of money.
