Radio Shack bigotry : C/D/S/D

People who are irrationally bigotted against Radio Shack because sometimes their products don't work quite as well as those by other electronics companies : C/D/S/D...

(I admit to being a Radio Shack bigot at times.)

(Probably for the Americans only, but not sure if Radio Shack is a global phenomenon or not)

I hate em because the clerk always asks if he can help you find something & won't leave you alone .. unless you actually need help in which case he's helping someone else. (Or getting all of their vitals into the computer... for some reason, although they're an electronics store, their POS is still not networked with other stores...)

Also, their shit is marked up too high.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:09 (nineteen years ago) link

It's not quite 15 years, there was a Tandy in South Shields and Gateshead Metro Centre 'till about 5 years ago! Thery turned into some cellphone retail place. Obviously this was a sensible response to the ongoing national shortage of high-street cellphone retailers :/

Tandy will always rull as the home of the archer mini-amp, inadvertent king of guitar fuzzboxen.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

we had the same problem when we were trying to buy some travel speakers in Miami, we knew exactly what we wanted, but the clerks were either helping someone else, or avoiding eye contact and acting as though we had the plague.

A good few years ago I moidered my parents for ages to get me a remote controlled car. So I got one for Christmas, but it was radioshack, and the steering on it was so crap and the power wasn't much better, I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in anything in my life.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Radio Shack is fine for last-minute converter necessities and random high school science project materials. For everything else, according to everyone I've ever spoken to, they are completely worthless, though occasionally you will actually find a helpful salesperson who can tell you where to get something that WORKS.

Their cables are totally garbage usually too, except the stuff you buy on the spool, which is no worse than spool cables anywhere else in my experience. I paid way too much for an RJ45 crimping tool there once.

Only thing is ... I just went to look for it to take a picture of it, and I can't find the fucker. Hmmm. I wonder if I lent it to someone....

Also, their shit is marked up too high.

Their electronic components are especially overpriced.

I have an Archer 43-231 and a few other Realistic synth clones and cheap mixers and stuff. There are a lot of older Realistic pieces worth owning still, but the sad fact is that the vast majority of the stuff they make now is crap.

And when it is functional (like some of their mixers or whatever), it costs more than it's worth.

They never seem to have much tech knowlege, and many times Ive had the "oh youre a girl, here allow me to patronise you" thing from staff. Except the Tandy in Chapel St, where some guy from the goth scene I know works - he just leches all over me when I come in to buy spare crossover cables (which is about all Ive bought at Tandy I think).

Apparently Radio Shack is a pretty hellish company to work for, very nastily competive. That is probably the reason for the bad service you all have been getting there.

Radio Shack employees are the stupidest of the retail class - geeks with no social skills who are obviously too dumb to get a real tech job. Yeah, I remember Tandy doing this when I was a kid and Tandy still existed in the UK. Never really knew why, it's not like they ever called or sent anything in the post. It was weird though because this is not normal in the UK. istr that some stores in the US used to request your phone number if you paid by cheque?

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 3 February 2018 22:19 (six years ago) link

So this:

isn't a joke? It's a real thing? One of the very few Seinfeld jokes I never got was this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgfaYKoQxzQ

They all crack up. Is it because Kramer's remark is just his typical 'out there' reply, or is it because there really is something about them asking for your phone number? And if it's the latter, why is that funny? (I assumed maybe it's funny because everyone knows why they ask for you phone number, except me?)

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 3 February 2018 23:30 (six years ago) link

Yeah, that was a real thing. My Dad asked them about it once, and IIRC they said getting addresses was a way to research customer traffic (how far they were travelling to stores and finding places to put new ones) and to send out mailers, while collecting phone #'s was so they could inform you of sales and stuff (this was pre-internet, obvs).
