How much do you think ppl's drunken utterances reflect their true feelings?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 10:03 (twenty years ago) link

People's drunken outbursts are their Ids, unchained.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 10:06 (twenty years ago) link

the thread title was said by a character on TV (in a soap prolly, can't remember who I was channel-hopping) who was haranguing someone, possibly 'on the morning after the night before' about something momentous they said whilst inebriated.

I mean, what is more "true"? The Id or the Ego?

I would hope the Ego, because if I'm to be judged by my uncontrolled drunken Id, I'm even more of an asshole than I ever feared.

When I'm drunk I am really clumsy & almost always knock my drink over (sorry to all of those whos carpets have had to endure my red wine stains) & I am really loud. Oh & I get quite dirty/rude with it. That isn't my usual personality, I think, but I get quite embarassed about the clumsiness thing.

"Monsters! Monsters from the Id!"

(I apologise for my Freudian terms, but the sentiment is still quite meaningful.)

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 10:09 (twenty years ago) link

In vino veritas etc.

I think you do say things what are in there; they are not things you do not think, but they are your partial takes on an issue, when the restraining counterarguments you let influence your base emotional immediate response, are forgotten.

Hence - someone is ball-busting you. They may be good reasons for this. In conversation, you recognise this. But the base emotion is that they are ball-busting you, and this is not ncie. A few glasses of bouze later and the factors that affect their ball-busting are forgotten and you are left with the fact that they are a cunt and you hate them and they are a cunty hateful person.

AKA a version of the Mannoni formula for fetishism - I know very well that most things are shades of grey, but fuck it, I'm pissed.

I agree, Dave. End of the day, it's certinaly more real as to how you feel, but only mad people (or drunk people) only live their lives, or voice their opinions, based upon how they feel from moment to moment.

But when Mark says "true feelings", I suspect you're not refering to ACTUAL feelings, just your real opinion of things at the time coimprised of how you feel and how you think. If this is so, then how your drunk rantings are far FAR less "real" than rantings conducted in sobriety.

I'd say it comes more from the ego, unchained from the superego.

There's a sociologist called David Matza who has a theory of deviance based around what he calls subterrianian values.

Everyone has these.

So the deviant are those who do not let social norms and values chain in their subterrianian values. I point this out, because although he was mainly using it as a model to look at criminal behavior, he also felt the need to point out that the drunk also act on their subterranian values.

I am a pathological liar when drunk (not always, but it does happen), I could site many example - and I don't just mean exaggerating, in certain drunken states I can make up the most incredible, imaginative stories so I tend to disagree with the "it must've come from somewhere" thing! In fact I wish I was that imaginative when sober, I reckon I could make a fortune writing fiction....

smee (smee), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:50 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe the "it must have come from somewhere" is the fact that you are a frustrated fiction writer!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:51 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know, people say lots of things they don't mean, all the time, for different reasons. Being drunk is no different, the things don't mean any more or less than anything else I guess. Possibly less cos nobody remembers things if they're truly wrecked.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:54 (twenty years ago) link

Kate you are a genius! Now all I have to do to make my millions is stay permanently inebriated, what bliss ;0)

smee (smee), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:56 (twenty years ago) link

Well, it worked for Bukowski et countless al. so...

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:58 (twenty years ago) link

I'm off to the offy....

smee (smee), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:00 (twenty years ago) link

I wanna be clumsy & loud, I'm coming with you Smee!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:08 (twenty years ago) link

Kewel! Shall we drink cheapo booze or pretend we are posh?

smee (smee), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

Go with the posh dahling!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:19 (twenty years ago) link

ooh, OK I'll put the buckfast back and buy some cider, now THATS posh!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:20 (twenty years ago) link

being a non drinker for so long, this is an interesting topic to me. i always found it hard to believe that people would say and do things that they 'didn't mean' and also that they'd forget entire chunks of evenings.

now having joined the ranks of you crazy english binge drinkers, i still think that people are generally telling the truth, but dave b's explanation seems right to me.

although this has ended up with me having scarily relevatory (is that a word?) conversations while we were both drunk, and am still dealing with the fallout from such conversations. so i don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:28 (twenty years ago) link

I think ultimately a good thing if the conversation needed to be had.
