Hilarious or deplorable?

Neither, just fucking dull. He's chasing some women and it's sped-up a bit; what the fuck is funny about that? And that "Ernie" song blows too.

And Snoop Dogg's comedy mentor. That would explain a few things.

Benny Hill was a strange man - has anyone read that recent bio of him by the guy who's also done bios of Python and the Beatles (Roger Wilmut, IIRC)? I read an article which excerpted bits from it and it revealed he was quite a sad, pathetic sort of bloke.

Main thing that comes to mind from that article is the anecdote about how badly he went down in front of stage audiences before he got his big TV break - he was once singing a song that went "A, I'm simply amazing, B, I'm beautiful" and an audience member interrupted him by going "C, you're a cunt" and throwing his pint over him.

Apparently in real life he liked to be fussed over by two women at once.

his shows had some pretty interesting sight gags.

and his slapping that old guy on the head = CLASSIX.

The Benny Hill Show was a pre-emptive metaphor for ILX - Hill is the (ex)moderators, the scantily clad nurses are c-man, Momus is the slaphead obv.

so the mods lust after the posters?

arf, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago) link

no they just chase them with intent to administer a jolly good spanking.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago) link

A classic but total dud once the singing commenced. I never understood a word after that.

'Naughty Samuel peeps!'

There was a whole song based around this punning conceit. That's all i can remember, really.

I finish watching The Manchurian Candidate for the first time (good film but at this distance its paranoid weirdness sometimes doesn't work) and one of the first things I see is a link to a thread where I said "Dan I lick your frosting." So much is clear. I am off to play solitaire.

watch it again. it takes abt 5 viewing b4 you see everything

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 5 January 2004 01:07 (twenty years ago) link

I'm thinking that would be the case, yes. Anyway, more ruminations on the revived Manchurian Candidate thread.

Ned, where is this bizarro universe you inhabit and can we send you puppies and croutons?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 January 2004 02:07 (twenty years ago) link

Sure. Mind you, it's a bit hard to crawl inside my skull if you want to come visit...

his humor always seemed like some caricature of a ghost of silent movie slapstick, like the result of misremembering bad 8mm prints of harold lloyd sped up to incoherence.
