my parents are divorced. so what ! i agree. so much so, maybe we should have expiry dates for marriage. and when they go by their "freshness date", we party ! like a wake ! in the past it was all about being socially acceptable.....

Let's fire all the marriage counselors and hire fencing coaches.

so with rising divorce rates whats happening with annulments?

For a while, I thought marriages should only last for two years at a time. At that point, the couple would decide if they should keep on for another two or not. That was when I was much younger though. Now I've been with my current boyfriend for over 5 years and it hasn't seemed very long at all.

I'm glad my parents divorced. In fact, I have often wished my dad would divorce again! (ha ha, I'm so mean to the evil step-mother). When my parents were together, it was just night after night of horrible arguments. I'm not saying the divorce wasn't painful - I only realize its importance in retrospect.

Turns out my divorce-iversary is on Elvis's birthday. Like I needed two more things to drink to.

I've heard of break-up parties. A friend-of-a-friend ended her relationship with her long-time girlfriend and was really depressed and whatnot. So her friends had a big "party" to welcome her back to single-hood, but it was more like a supportive we're-here-for-you thing. They bought her presents (she and her gf had been living together so there were a lot of household items the newly-single girl needed), had cake, etc. etc.

Hey--handfasting requires you to only make a commitment of one year...that's pretty close to your model, Sarah!

gff, Monday, 5 November 2007 04:21 (sixteen years ago) link

no, just the woman and her close friends, i don't think the ex-hubby will be throwing one, but i probably wouldn't be invited to his anyway.

Miss Manners says this is in bad taste. I can see how her opinion would be influenced given the mere existence of "The First Wives' Club."

Not hating on enjoying them tho.

my friend was minutes away from beginning a three-way with the guest of honor at one of these when her 13 year old daughter walked in the room asking what was going on.

he got so sick that he left the party entirely.

we went out to dinner with my dad when my parents' divorce came through, but it wasn't so much a celebration as drawing a line under the whole sorry mess.

I was married once before skot, to a guy i randomly called a cockfarmer on this space. Tonight I was looking at an old bag of photos/memorabilia. Found our divorce announcement. We had colour copies made of a Barbara Kruger http://www.barbarakruger.com/art/tell_us.gif and on the back we wrote something about peacefully going our separate ways. It was a sneaky trick of mine cuz he was dutch and took the "tell us something we don't know" statement at face value, whereas I thought it meant kind of like, "duh... we didn't get along and everyone could see it." We chose the eyeball picture too cuz we felt very exposed.

I was driving by the local laundromat and saw a woman getting into a car that was decorated all over with "JUST DIVORCED", "FREE AT LAST" etc in paint-pen, with streamers and cans hanging off the back, a la a wedding car. I kind of liked it...I grew up thinking divorce was such a horrible thing, but to see it celebrated like that made me feel kind of happy for the girl, so I guess hooray for her. Kinda weird though.

They have a roast and the audience gets to decide at the end "who is at fault"

one year passes...

there's "wedding photographers" how come there's no "divorce photographers"

Well one time I was buying sausages at the local butcher when a woman in a wedding dress strolled into the store and handed me a camera. "I got married 10 years ago today and I've been divorced for 8. I thought I might as well get some use out of this dress." She posed for some photos and then buggered off.
