How would you feel if you went to the video store to buy a lottery ticket for your moms, only to find a $20 bill in front of a soda machine, inspiring you to attend the nearest drug store to buy some schweet candy, in turn discovering a $10 badass lil' Kawasaki keyboard that's probably as kooky a Christmas gift as you're likely to find for yourself, to then coming home and having police helicopters hovering above your roof pointing rifles and machine guns at you 'cuz your neighbors happened to rob a few banks outta a shitload o' money figuring somewhere in the $200,000+ range, and having everyone from the FBI to the SWAT team to a buncha coppers with VERY bulky firearms all involved and hanging out at your doorstep, all looking like a scene right out of a movie? WHOoOOOoOOooOoO! Anyone care to sympathize? I wish I had had a camera. It was pretty wild (yuppers). Anyone had an afternoon like this before?

Did they let you into your house? I can sort of sympathize only because the scene you've described is kind of similar to the gauntlet I used to run through to get to work in the mornings at my old job.

Before we married my wife opened the door of her apartment, only to have a pair of armed men barge past her into her living room. After some initial fear and confusion, they finally identified themselves as police officers (in plain clothes) called to the area because an escaped convict, a murderer, was believed to be occupying the house next to her apartment building. She was evicted into the street and told to leave the area until further notice. No mention was made of how this notice might be given.

After a tense three hour standoff, the house next door was discovered to be empty.

TOMBOT: Oh yeah, it was no problem at all. They apparently already knew who the suckers were before it even happened. The authorities had been setting their sights on 'em, it seems. It is rumored that they are responsible for several other bank robberies, but it hasn't been proven yet. Plus that wasn't the first time the cops have been called on 'em. According to my mom, while I was out in college earlier this year, two of the dudes had a fight with each other and a shot was fired, but nothing major occurred, seeing as the 'victim', who was also the aggresor's twin brother, didn't press charges.

The Dog hews pretty close to the Lumet film in the details of the robbery--saw them on a double-bill tonight--and fills in lots of fascinating stuff before and after. I thought from the trailer I saw a few weeks ago that John Wojtowicz was going to be too much--in terms of playing to the camera--but he's not that way at all. One thing Lumet avoided--and turned into a joke--was that Sal, Cazale's character, and Robert Westenberg, the kid who backs out right away, were also gay. The documentary adds a really nice touch at the end, which you can probably guess if you know Dog Day Afternoon.
