magic mushrooms in the UK

So judging by the amount of boutiques openly selling "fresh magic mushrooms" of late, it seems that there has been a change in the law on these.

What are your views? Good/bad?

Also - I want to know if they work better dry or fresh and also which are your faves?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:29 (twenty years ago) link

I like them but am fairly iffy about doing them in the depths of cold dark winter. Last time we kept them in honey, which is meant to make them stronger and yes they were kind of psychosis inducing. Urban myth has it that Irish ones are particularly potent though.

Dry are certainly alot nicer to eat.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:37 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think there's been a change in the law; it's always been the case that fresh mushrooms are entirely legal, but if they are "prepared" in any way they become a Class A drug. The definition of "prepared" is a bit fuzzy, though.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:41 (twenty years ago) link

suddenly, they're on sale everywhere though. does anybody know if these are the ones that actually work or some poor imitation? it would save a certain amount of (fruitless,(vegetable-less?) this year) tramping around hillsides if they were.

hello caitlin.

Hello!

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:23 (twenty years ago) link

They're the real thing. We got some from Camden market the other day but took them at entirely the wrong time (whilst pissed round a mate's house). They didn't work too well because of this although I do remember thinking I was turning into a goat at one point. Better to wait for a sunny day and go for a walk really.

Another time we bought them legally from a stall at reading festival - Philosopher's Stones. They tasted really horrible but we had a great time on them.

sounds like they worked pretty well to me

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:42 (twenty years ago) link

There was big article in the Grauniad about this on the 29th - there's some loophole which allows them to be sold in some circumstances or whatever. If the walls weren't melting, just up the dosage and brew them up in tea and they don't taste too bad.

Alex K (Alex K), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:52 (twenty years ago) link

i've taken hand-picked a few times and never had that effect. sounds like the purchased ones are just as good.

although i'm not sure i WANT to think i'm turning into a goat. not at this stage of my life. or at any stage of my life.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:53 (twenty years ago) link

I used to role the dry ones up into tiny balls and pop them like pills
which meant you avoided having to taste them, obv

but chicken cuppa soup is the ideal way to brew them up.

worst idea eva was my mates who decided to wash them down with lemon tango.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:06 (twenty years ago) link

what.the.hell.?.

kephm, Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:52 (twenty years ago) link

My housemates made curry out of them once, and served it.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:04 (twenty years ago) link

I read that as "...and deserved it" which struck me as hilarious for a moment whew boy.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

it's not worht buying those ones in the shops usually, they're shit, theymight say mexican mushrooms or whatever thai mushrooms whatever but they've just grown them themselves and they're rubbish you'd have to spend about £100 to get any effect and that those prices you might as well take acid. you're much better off just finding a spot somewhere if you can.

l.:., Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:27 (twenty years ago) link

I remember my 1991 university fresher pack giving info on drugs and telling us that fresh mushrooms were legal (I guess otherwise you'd be prosecuting fields).

I too have been confused about why it's only now that they seem to be on widespread open sale.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:54 (twenty years ago) link

They were on sale at loads of stalls at Glastonbury, it was great.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:58 (twenty years ago) link

the law says you can sell them unprocessed, i.e. not dried only fresh.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:57 (twenty years ago) link

We know! But we were wondering why it's only lately that they've been everywhere.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:05 (twenty years ago) link

Someone stopped taking them long enough to work out how to cultivate.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:07 (twenty years ago) link

I remember my 1991 university fresher pack giving info on drugs and telling us that fresh mushrooms were legal (I guess otherwise you'd be prosecuting fields).

Giving info - like, where to score what? How much of a dose is too much? What to do when you think you're a goat? Molecular structure? Historical contributions to art because of?

"Don't do drugs, kids! Umm...unless they're legal! Then go ahead and get fucked up - the Student Life office would like to remind you that it is indeed an integral part of the college experience...but they're too fucked up at the moment to write anything cognizant down."

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:08 (twenty years ago) link

Do you not get 'straight up talk to ver kids drugs' info in your country's colleges? I suppose I should add that this was from the student union - not the university itself.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:12 (twenty years ago) link

We were told they were "bad". I think that's about it. I mean, I've never really indulged myself, but god knows that the choice had nothing to do with shit like that.

said article:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1095822,00.html

seems odd that it is legal, and that there has not been more crackdown.

it's like the south park episode where everyone tells the kids that the time for experimentation is in college, mmm-k?

fourteen years pass...

Any reason not to take a trusted friend up on an offer of a pot of tea and a trip sometime

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Sunday, 21 January 2018 01:21 (six years ago) link

i don't like tea

i am a skinematographer (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 January 2018 01:22 (six years ago) link

I wish I'd taken more advantage of this loophole era when you could just buy them in shops. Probably got them about 4 times?

they're rubbish you'd have to spend about £100 to get any effect

^ this was complete bollocks btw. my wife completely lost the ability to speak once, she had to write things down and she is not a lightweight

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 21 January 2018 01:44 (six years ago) link

xxp
Psilocybin tea is vile and always made me want to vomit, on the other hand LSD lasts way too long and is a mare if you are still tripping long into the next day. I wouldn't touch either with a bargepole these days tbh.

calzino, Sunday, 21 January 2018 02:01 (six years ago) link

You need very high quality trusted friends to help you if a trip becomes becomes a bad psychological squeeze, and this stuff isn't for everyone imo.

calzino, Sunday, 21 January 2018 02:17 (six years ago) link

Can you micro-dose? Or at least take a tiny bit first and work your way up but not in the course of a few days but like one little bit one day then maybe whenever the next time is try a little more?

infinity (∞), Sunday, 21 January 2018 02:36 (six years ago) link

Never gone the tea route, but I imagine it would be difficult to gauge the amount you’re ingesting? Too much is... too fucking much.

circa1916, Sunday, 21 January 2018 02:50 (six years ago) link

had some indelibly wonderful experiences with shrooms
back at the time this thread was started, which i look back on with great fondness

that said, it was probably only wonderful through carefully weighted measurements and gently increasing the dose, as infinity suggested, so i dunno if tea would be good for a first timer

I don't know, I've always had a cavalier disregard for caution with psychedelics. They're just the best

i am a skinematographer (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 January 2018 09:11 (six years ago) link

Jealous of that. Heaven and hell, in my experiences. Dark times the most harrowing moments of my life. Don’t regret it though.

circa1916, Sunday, 21 January 2018 09:21 (six years ago) link

Never made tea, it's easier to just get it over with and chew them up and swallow.

Of course, I had a cast iron stomach when I was eating them regularly, now I might be more prone to getting sick.

louise ck (milo z), Sunday, 21 January 2018 09:23 (six years ago) link

Yeah idg the attempts to make it palatable by mixing it with food or drink. Hold your nose, throw it down the hatch, chase it with a drink. It’s nothing.

circa1916, Sunday, 21 January 2018 09:38 (six years ago) link

I always felt it was one of those things I should keep away from...

The number of times I'd express some sort of creative idea I had, but whoever I was telling would roll their eyes and go 'eh, lay off the acid Mann' (e.g. a song where everyone feels the need to rise up and take back the means of production but are hampered by being bicycles)..

Not being in too many creative enterprises these days, I guess i don't need it now, and back then I didn't need it either.

Mark G, Sunday, 21 January 2018 09:55 (six years ago) link

Growing your own shrooms, then drying, powdering, and filling them into gelatine capsules, is neither hard nor expensive, and resolves all the taste and dosage issues.

oder doch?, Sunday, 21 January 2018 10:06 (six years ago) link

we clearly have different levels of estimation for effort

i am a skinematographer (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 January 2018 10:58 (six years ago) link

If that method turned shit into gold I still wouldn't be fucked doing it tbh

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Sunday, 21 January 2018 11:38 (six years ago) link

Stronger is better ime. When I had access, I really liked the strong Hawaiian ones that came on quickly. Some of the weaker types were not so good as they didn’t have enough uplift to take you fully out of your current concerns. There’s nothing worse that sitting in your apartment with the same depressing thoughts going round in your mind - but this time on shrooms.

psychedelics turn the shit of human consciousness into the gold of knowledge of the godhead, man

I'm awful easygoing tho and have no worries so xp

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Sunday, 21 January 2018 11:42 (six years ago) link

find most of my worries were replaced with "i'm tripping balls this is fucking awesome :D :D :D"

i am a skinematographer (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 January 2018 11:45 (six years ago) link

If you’re with a trusted, experienced friend and are solidly of the “no worries” mental disposition, yeah, you should absolutely do it.

circa1916, Sunday, 21 January 2018 11:55 (six years ago) link

yeah, tripping is just straight-up fun, i wish i’d had the opportunities to try more types of psychedelics back in my youth

not to get all timothy leary but it’s also an experience i wish more people in general had tried cuz it’s pretty instructive to realise just how easily your everyday sensorium can be tweaked and just how much of what you take for granted about what you see, feel, hear, taste and touch every day is an illusion you’ve simply become accustomed to

okay i failed at not sounding like a raddled old hippy but fuck it

grim-n-gritty hooty reboot (bizarro gazzara), Sunday, 21 January 2018 11:55 (six years ago) link

I wouldn't do it these days, I'm too concerned that the flimsy B+Q decking that's keeping me from sinking into the swamp might be an illusion - but it's possibly a very necessary one. But I had some some serious fun and terror with LSD in my youth.

calzino, Sunday, 21 January 2018 12:00 (six years ago) link

xp

Haha. It really is impossible to talk about the (legitimately instructive and profound) insights you can have on this stuff without sounding horribly cliche. Needs to be experience firsthand.

circa1916, Sunday, 21 January 2018 12:03 (six years ago) link

The small handful of times i tried this (shrooms or acid) ranged from no perceptible effect to horrible introspective paranoia, the feeling that everyone was looking at me and judging my every word and facial expression. I wouldn't have said I'm a super anxious person, no more than the average shut-in nerd on this site anyway. Maybe that is in fact pretty anxious.

lana del boy (ledge), Sunday, 21 January 2018 12:33 (six years ago) link

Mix the shrooms into a smoothie. Really nice, micro dose it as well so it's just a night of laughs - don't get carried away

itt: a bunch of ilxors realise how much they miss tripping, gofundme a bulk purchase of shrooms for the board

tried it again for the first time in years on my birthday last year. we got up and went on a big walk. I definitely felt more anxious, more self-conscious and more cynical about the experience than when I was younger, especially when it involved being around other members of the public. walking through the streets and negotiating traffic was not much fun. reaching nature and larking about in the woods was a lot better. Despite everything, it was a lot of fun

Badgers (dog latin), Sunday, 21 January 2018 14:54 (six years ago) link

being in a natural environment, even if it’s just a park, is prob the best way to maximise the experience ime

had a deeply awesome experience in kelvingrove park once which has stayed with me ever since, then on the way home spent way too long staring in pie-eyes half-awe, half-fear at a large statue of a tyrannosaurus rex which was then on display in front of glasgow uni

it were a good day, that
