Well, so the holiday is on Monday, but apparently people have their Thanksgiving dinners on, like, tonight or tomorrow. It's kinda fuzzy.

The reason we do that is so no one has to run around on Monday like an, ahem, turkey with their head chopped off!
At least that's the reason in my family... unfortunately I am working all weekend and so it's off to Grandmother's house on Monday. Can't wait for the turkey!

my housemate dropped a caramel pecan pumpkin pie off on my doorstep for enjoyment when I got home from work last night.. delicious. I wish I'd brought a piece to work instead of leftover stir fry.

I guess I am kind of startled by a national holiday that is celebrated, you know, somewhere AROUND today, more or less. I mean it works, it just doesn't feel as coherent as the Thanksgivings I'm used to.

Anyway I'm going to make pumpkin rolls, I think.

I have eaten myself into a state of semi-conciousness.
I am not drunk like the rest of the adults though o_o

i made mashed taters with chorizo, green beans, and asparagus.

i'm kind of bummed out, don't know what i'm gonna do tonight.

thanksgiving evening, when relatives go home and my parents go to bed early because they're beat, is a bit of a strange letdown. when you eat ALL DAY it feels late early.

my relatives are making lamb, not turkey, for thanksgiving dinner
most of my family is unhappy over this but i am psyched!

We're hosting this year. So far, pretty relaxed, but we'll see how it is as we get closer to 1PM, when the others arrive.

I am making a broccoli casserole with Velveeta and have to transport it by metro to Maryland

we are going to a buffet-style inn dinner, for the third year in a row. Only have to clean up your lap.

Some lousy Pilgrim just passed me another smallpox blanket so that puts the kibosh on me going to the dinner my friend booked at her club, which I'd only been looking forward to for three weeks. However, the mystery of what the cold is and where it came from has been solved, because the cousin I saw in MN the night before I returned to London has the same damned virus. At this point I would rather have had schweinflü.

Nevertheless, Happy Thanksgiving ILX. May you vanquish your right-wing relatives in all games of chance, including Scrabble.

I have been cooking up a storm preparing for relatives arriving tomorrow using recipes from the last ever gourmet magazine (damn you condé nast </shakes fist colbert style>). Brinign the turkey which is something I've never done before. everything is ready to role so all I have to do is but the bird on, and get the veg done, keeping the sides simple and preparable in adavance, should be pretty easy.

This evening going round to friends for 2nd of three turkey dinners this week and taking a pumpkin cheesecake although I think that my oven here is too temperamental for such a delicate operation. it seems to be too firm on top and too loose on the bottom. Hopefully it will be tasty despite gloopyness. recipe

I liek the sound of Maria's dinner if only because lamb is so hard to come by. I think I will plan in advance and get a leg of lamb in for xmas (the local farmers market will source if you ask). Wrong time of year I know but I'm already three turkeys into the year.

so far today, i have made:
1- cranberry sauce
2- chestnut stuffing with and without andouille sausage
3- a 16 pound turkey (stuffed with the andouille sausage stuffing)
4- my famous lentil nut loaf (for the vegetarians)
5- succotash

i am three beers in and it is only 2:30 here. dinner is at five.

and mostly i am thankful for the fam (my parents flew out to have thanksgiving with me) and the other fam of queers and poets who are coming for dinner.

Mom (age 81) is turning into Gracie Allen. I was charged with leading her to the dinner buffet but underestimated the level of supervision required, as I heard her say "I hope these are mashed potatoes" as she spooned whipped cream onto her plate.

Then she was telling me how her mother (born Ireland, 1883?) used to warm up a small amount of beer in a cup and drink it. "But I thought Grandma was a teetotaler?" "She was, she drank tea all her life."

My Ironic Thanksgiving: Spending the first Thanksgiving post-divorce #2 with my kids and a group of good friends including ex-wife #1. (She's the one who actually invited me.) Life is funny.

Can't think of another year that I've been more grateful for friendship in all its forms. It was hard to get through even with it, but without it I think I'd have been completely lost. That even includes online people I'll never meet who are always around to argue about music or politics or Terrence Malick. Happy Thanksgiving.

So that was all very sweet. Kids for the kids to play with, beautiful house, tons of food and wine, great company. And it was nice to see my ex, she was glad to meet the kids and it was just good to reconnect. Not a normal Thanksgiving, I guess, but it did everything Thanksgiving's supposed to do. (Or maybe it is a normal Thanksgiving now, who knows.)

Just had a fish-based thanksgiving with my boyfriend and his 18 year old daughter. Watched a lot of geek shows instead of the football. When he went out for a smoke she told me (completely unbidden) about his past relationships, asked how he was treating me, and gave me her email address. They fell out and made up. We drank a lot of coffee and had sweet potato pie. I don't think I've had what counts as a normal thanksgiving either, but I enjoyed it despite the strangeness.

I don't know if there is a normal Thanksgiving...but if you feel a little bit of good, share a good feeling with people, thats the important thing. That's the 'normal' part.
I mean, for both of you, Tipsy & Ljublana, you came away with some good feelings. Makes me happy to read that.

Feeling sentimental. Shared thanksgiving with my inlaws. With my whole family on the other side of the globe, this is when I start being thankful, because I don't know if I could last so long living away from home without my husband's family unconditionally welcoming me & giving me such warmth & support. They are good people. I'm rudiculously lucky to have two such sets, in both hemispheres, to balance out the world for me & keep me sane & loved.

Big dinner last night with housemates and their & my friends. Made biscuits for the first time - success, they rose. Made plum crumble for dessert. Slightly weird vibe because of complicated decisions right now about whether to move with these housemates or not. But still mostly fun.

Despise Thanksgiving dinner, except for the turkey itself. Green bean casserole, creamed onions, candied yams, etc. Why do people take perfectly good food and fuck it up by drowning it with butter, cream and god knows what else? Seriously, if you feel like crap after getting up from the dinner table then you did something wrong.

OTM, Thanksgiving food is like 90% garbage and the holiday would be vastly improved by eating just about anything else.

growing up i guess we had all those kind of sides but the Thanksgiving dinners I've been to in recent times people are showing off some great seasonal ingredients with thoughtful preparation and trying their hands at all kinds of interesting things.

There are no laws about what to eat on Thanksgiving, only customs. I expect that people who, on Thanksgiving, gladly gorge on green bean casserole, creamed onions, candied yams and so on, do not customarily eat well-prepared, healthy meals on other days either.

my old friend used to pick a different international cuisine to make an elaborate meal each thanksgiving. I only managed to go once, but it was such a great idea

I propose we switch the traditional Thanksgiving dinner to this. I've made Momofuku's Bo Ssam several times for different groups of friends and it always blows them away. It's a pefect dish to share with a large group of people, too.

I made turkey mole one year and now I'm a victim of its success. I get bugged to make it every year now. Obv it's a pretty big chore to even shop for, let alone make.

that is a chore, but at least mole can be made well in advance, no? i've had mole in my fridge keep fine for months before and it never deteriorated the slightest
