I saw Morricone at the Royal Albert last night dhharling, Damon was there, and Lewis-Smith, and Mark from Eastenders, but still, it was beautiful, anyway, isn't a live orchestra an amazing thing?

Perhaps this thread belongs on ilm but since I was going to go off about the timpani bloke swivelling to stare at Maestro Morricone so hard before bringing the theme from The Mission to a ringing crescendo, breaking off abruptly on the twitch of a baton, I thought maybe it should go here. A live orchestra is an amazing beast, I haven’t seen one in action for some time. So whose you’re favourite member of the ensemble anyway? I liked the smiley, breezy waif like solo pianist from last night, but the percussionists were all dons too, the eighty year old classical kit man squinting at the pages arrayed on the stand in front of him thinking "ah, ‘swing’ is it? Right then…" as he gets right into it, flicking the splash at the same time as turning the page like the seasoned pro that he is.

Clearly nobody on this slag shares my post-Morricone enthusiasm. Pah.

I'm jealous you got to see him, at least. And I like yr post. I'm glad you seem to appreciate "The Mission", too, no-one ever mentions that

i thought this was going to be about famous ppl. i saw michael moore and john leslie coming out of the preview/first night of jerry springer: the opera at the cambridge last night...

It was amazing. Really. Those soaring strings that he loves, and the trumpets. Started off with the Untouchables theme - what better way to begin... Then there was a whole suite titled somewhat pompously something like The Myth and Moderninty in the Movies of Sergio Leone, which opened with the ole -wa-ee-aa-ee-aa-

The Mission was incredible (although the encore of it was marred slightly by the fact the diva chose to sing it in English), in fact the whole thing was incredible, even witnessing the RAH sing an impromptu happy birthday to a clearly unimpressed Morricone, who turned from the pedestal to bow with obvious reluctance, and then spy the great man do the Maestro classic of waving away an avid autograph hunter with disdain during the series of standing ovations.

It sounds wonderful, I would have loved to have been there.

If he plays again, you simply *must* go (sweetie). Felt kind of like a once in a lifetime type thang, you know etc.

ME TO THREAD.

I'm going to be on TV again singing with The Boston Pops for their holiday concert (special guests VINCE GILL and AMY GRANT). It will be on A&E Dec 12 at 8:00 PM. It will be good (mostly).

Every instrument in the orchestra is worthy, but there are few things more wonderful than a fantastic string section (particularly cellos). One of those few things is a tight french horn section.

Any Berlioz fans out there? I'm going to be in the chorus for Berlioz's "L'enfance du Christ" in January.

twenty years pass...

Slightly random question but, generally, where's good to be sat at the Royal Albert Hall??

I was at this concert.

But did you have good seating?

djh, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 16:14 (one week ago) link

I think so, I can't remember where I was sitting though!

I was at a much later gig, and I do not recommend the balcony, felt scared that I would somehow fall off the whole time.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 17:00 (one week ago) link

Oh, that's good to know.

djh, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 17:23 (one week ago) link

tbc I do not believe I was in actual danger, just if you have any fear of heights I'd recommend against it

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 17:40 (one week ago) link

RAH is legendary for poor acoustics but that might be more relevant for recitals, possibly it's a different scenario for amplified performances but I've never seen anything resembling a rock band there so I couldn't say for sure. Maybe on the floor seating area would be best? Near the mixing desk usually works!

the deep cut is the firstest (Matt #2), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 17:45 (one week ago) link

Floor seating or the boxes around the perimeter are best, if you're higher up you need to be no farther from the stage than say between the 10 o'clock - 2 o'clock positions.
