Colin sets free mouse number three

It was a beautiful morning this morning, and my mouse friendly trap was closed again, indicating I had caught a third mouse in my kitche. As I had done with the previous two, I walked down to the local park to set him free. Children were playing on the swings, birds were singing, somewhere a dog didn't bark. I was going to set free my mouse by the fence, but inspired by the beauty of my surroundings I set the tiny brown creature free on the cut grass, and watched with a self-consciously motherish pride as he hopped away. I was about to turn and leave, my job well done, when suddenly a large magpie swooped down from a nearby roof, scooped him up, and carried him off squeaking to a nest somewhere.

Dear Lord, please don't let me be reborn as a mouse in Australia.

When we lived in Colo, Iowa we had a lotta mice and we got one o' these here Hav-a-Heart traps. I would take the mice across the street to a field near some grain bins, and watch them run back across the street, through our yard, and back underneath the house.

Then we bought a cat.

And then the cat took them across the street...

Three or four days after we bought the cat I woke up and stumbled out to the living room. Sat down at the piano bench we were using as a computer desk. It was still dark inside 'cause it was late autumn, and I'm staring at the floor waiting for a page to load or something and I see what looks like, I don't know, some random dust-bunny or something. Got distracted and ignored it for a while, but then it started getting lighter in the house and my wife woke up & when she came out to the living room she was like "What's that?" and I was like "I don't know, a dustball or something" and she leans down and says "No I don't think so: it's a mouse head"
