Admittedly, I've been lukewarm/skeptical since as far back as the start of the Austin Powers era--but the glimpse of trailer I caught today looked truly, truly spoooooky.

The Jim Carrey version of The Grinch was beyond dreadful and missed the point of the book, I'd be very surprised if this was any better.

Was prolly the buzz from the beer;> Since it has Mike Myers in, I can hope tis funny. However, studios have a habit of shredding creativity

I couldn't see the TV well, but he looked sort of like a Teenage Werewolf/Captain Kangaroo hybrid ...

it's a very odd, unsettling story. i just can't see hollywood making it as freaky as it needs to be. maybe tim burton should have made it.

If the Aphex Twin and Chris Cunningham did The Cat in the Hat, it would be the greatest thing ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 01:50 (sixteen years ago) link

but then the Cat would have tits & a bad moustache, and all the children would cry.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 02:58 (sixteen years ago) link

And how is this different from the Mike Meyers version?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 03:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Aphex Twin's tits would be bigger, shoot psychedelic milk, and throb in time with the soundtrack.

mike myers' would just sag there, and occaisonally talk to each other.

I saw this, and it was terrifyingly bad. It was shocking how bad this movie was. I liked The Grinch but this was the kind of movie that makes you feel ashamed the whole time you are watching it. I think it has potential to be one of the Worst Movies Of All Time. My favorite joke:

Sally: Like being in the circus!
The Cat: Yeah, but without those tortured animals or drunken clowns that have hepatitis.

By the time the Cat in the Hat brings the kids to a rave for a cameo from Paris Hilton it had crossed the line from grotesque surrealism into a pure unadulterated nightmare.

Lots of really funny negative reviews of this movie. The most accurate ones likened him to an alcoholic clown at a children's birthday party.

Apparently when MM backed out of doing the Sprockets movie the studios sued him and stuff and I think this was the result of whatever litigation all the parties went through.

The film contains a number of adult themes, such as:

* The Cat begins to explain to the children where babies come from before being cut off by Conrad.

* The Cat sings a song about a cat back home where he was bred who never listened to his mother and was finally taken to a vet and was neutered. He sings the line as "...to cut off both his ba... ba... ba..." and cuts off by saying "Boy!". (In a deleted verse, which is included on the film's soundtrack, the Cat sang about a know-it-all cat who liked to be the "teacher's pet" and sings the line "...it took a ton of TNT to kill the bug up her a...a...a..." and cuts off by saying "Ask me...".)

* When Lawrence is at home relaxing on the pile of messes, on TV, he is watching what appears to be a stripper dancing until the TV is repossessed.

* When the Cat spots the photo of Joan he unfurls it centerfold-style, gets excited saying "hubbata hubbata" and his hat extends. It is revealed in a deleted scene that the photo of Joan featured her in her underwear.

* When the Cat cuts his tail off he yells out "SON OF A BI..." before it's bleeped out and the broadcast is terminated, followed by a cat on a rope with a whistle version of "The Girl from Ipanema".

* After the Cat unsuccessfully tries to capture Nevins he 'talks' to the hoe he is holding, calling it a "dirty hoe" and then apologizing with "I'm sorry baby, I love you", finally proceeding to lick it.

* The acronym of the Cat's car's former name is S.H.I.T. (Super Hydraulic Instantaneous Transporter) which Conrad is about to say before the Cat cuts him off, saying "Oh! Quick to the SLOW!"

* When the children are passing the fire-breathing toilet on Mrs. Kwan, the Cat states "Something like that really burns my--" before being drowned out by Conrad and Sally's screaming.

Many jokes are crude and kid-unfriendly, but the entire character of the Cat plays like Robin Williams' Genie tripping on ecstasy while watching bad early 90s SNL skits.

Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 00:20 (ten years ago) link

I meant to say this film is offensive on a multitude of levels apart from the crude jokes.
