(Not that that matters; mine did but I still wear them. Out of loyalty or something.)

Nice one, I was gonna start a new one of these threads!

No, I just like shoes. I'm like the Imelda Marcos of men who work in the AV dept. of Exeter Uni. Library. Which means that I have about 14 pairs and Billy has about 2.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:54 (twenty years ago) link

Yesterday I was wearing three-year-old Nike ACG trainers which have no sole anymore, and I nearly died slipping down a greasy road.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:55 (twenty years ago) link

Nice, Nick. I am going to Top Man this lunchtime and may well come back with a new pair myself. Top man totally rocks at the moment.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:03 (twenty years ago) link

I need a pair of shoes that actually *fit*. Shoeworld of the Brunswick Centre may be cheap, but it's hell on us half sizes. Both my pairs of shoes are either too big or too small to be comfortable.

But Suzy has agreed to take me shoeshopping at the weekend, so hopefully this will change.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:05 (twenty years ago) link

My sister's just bought us our bridesmaid shoes for her wedding on new years eve, and she spent £115!!! They'll hardly be seen, as the dresses are floor length, and I really can't imagine me wearing them again. They're nice, but not very me - lots of beading and stuff, and dainty. Definitely evening shoes.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:13 (twenty years ago) link

I'm watching the buckets of rain right now and the huge puddles and thinking about the mile walk I'll need to make in it later and really wishing I'd gotten around to buying new shoes that didn't have holes in the soles.

(Ironically those holey shoes were bought because the last pair were ruined in hurricane flooding.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

Appearances can be deceptive. This is the most uncomfortable shoe I've bought in a long time (I do mean that in the singular - the left foot is pain-free).

I didn't buy any shoes today in Top Man (I got a parka instead), but they DO have the Green and white Fly shoes I've been craving for the last 3 months, so I might have to go back tomorrow. They have loads of great shoes, actually - I must not go mad, I must not go mad, I must not go mad...

I like the red fuckme shoes in teeny's pic but haven't worn heels since about 1997 and quite possibly never will again. They are evil.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:57 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah Steve Madden is actually not my style either, but it's a good price, so I thought I'd pass it along to the New Yorkers. Tell me more about these "mountains" though; can you order them in?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:57 (twenty years ago) link

Archel, if you lose the desire to wear fuck me heels then you lose the will to live. And Matt will be very disappointed. You could wear them to Glasgow!

I have to say that I find hiking/walking etc. boots to be the least stylish things ever invented. They go with fleeces and mutlicoloured rucksacks, for god's sake. Sorry Ed.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:01 (twenty years ago) link

I own, two pairs of walking boots, two pairs of mountaineering boots, a pair of ski-mountaineering boots and a pair of climbing shoes, I wear none of them in an urban situation. They are not meant to be stylish they are meant to be functional. Incidentally I own a fleece but I hardly wear it, even in extra-urban situations, its covered in dried on expanding foam for when I rat proofed a converted pig sty. It was ugly before that I much prefer my woolly jumper.

Shoes are great. Gloria Hunniford once said: "You should always spend good money on shoes and your bed, because if you not in one then you'll be in the other." I like those silver Prada slipper things. I'd buy a pair but they'd look ridiculous on me. And I don't think they probably do them in 12.

What is a kitten heel?

I need help in this regard, because I don't like heels either. I used to be able to get away with a Cuban Heel, which I could actually balance in, but these days it just makes my feet hurt.

I've GOT to find something to wear on my feet that isn't trainers or hiking boots! (I forgot about my hiking boots until Ed reminded me, but I only ever wear them in Wiltshire.)

Yeah mine were canvas. Converse are made of canvas, right? Lotta friends tell me their feet feel great in them, that they really get to breathe and are great barefoot...and I'm just always going wtf. Sometimes I really think think people are misinterpreting the quality as some sort of metaphorical thing... like their feet get to "breathe" via nut being "crushed by cushions or thick materials. imo I don't think I've ever owned a shoe where I felt my feet... um, tickled by the wind.

I am having a miserable time finding decent-looking (like, somewhat officey professional style) shoes that I can walk ~3 miles a day in. Question for in orbit and anyone else who knows anything about character shoes: these are intended for serious wear, yah? But are they somehow OK for dancing on stage but not walking around a lot in places that, er, aren't theaters? Because I'm getting desperate here and a nice T-strap with a 2-2.5 inch heel that is kind to feet and can take a beating would be sooooooooooo great.

and I really like them, but the bottom layer of the sole is this weird synthetic material that I guess is glued on, and I had the glue melt and the sole come loose while I was on a subway escalator. Luckily I was at Lex/53rd and my shoe repair guy is right in the subway station -- he said he had never seen the sole material before.

they are "expensive" because they're made of natural calfskin, made in europe, and aimed luxury consumers. but they're actually rather cheap for a sneaker that ticks all of those boxes.

the late great, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 22:31 (six years ago) link

yeah was gonna say price actually seems very reasonable, in a similar range to campers, many of which are not as expensive a material as calfskin.

Anyway, I was actually gonna put in a word for Beckett Simonon -- one of these internet only companies that takes advance orders, mostly for dress shoes but now they also do boots and sort of luxe sneakers. I'm not really a fan of their sneakers, but I did order a pair of burgundy oxfords from them and they are pretty sick and incredibly well-made for $160. I want to buy boots from them now, the only problem is the lead time means I won't have them til January and I kind of want boots now.

Yeah, those turned out bad and I'm returning them. Color is really ugly in person, less red and more tan than pictured, and I'm not sure the chukka shape suits me anyway (I feel like in pics they're always shown with extremely slim leg pants, jeans that are hemmed high, and I have thick calves and can't wear super slim-legged pants without looking like I'm wearing tights.
