It's a shame they've built all over Pomona

There's some open wilderness left but that bit has been cut off by the developments I think, you can't get on there to wander about.

(Pomona a possible Real England candidate if not done already)

Probably worth posting on the other thread too. If you've not seen it, it's here: Explosion at Ariana Grande concert in Manchester May 2017

Haven't been for years, and the immediate context made me wonder whether i should cancel my trip but Manchester is looking absolutely resplendent and thriving in the early evening sun.

how long are these bikes going to last

ogmor, Sunday, 16 July 2017 20:43 (six years ago) link

I think it is a great idea and should be encouraged, but don't fucking call them Burnham Bikes!

calzino, Sunday, 16 July 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

I've had no need to try one but they look like they'd be fun

ogmor, Sunday, 16 July 2017 21:18 (six years ago) link

the local smackheads in old trafford set fire to one in the street. came back a bit later when the lock had burnt through and trundled off with it. idea's fine if you can rely on a degree of social responsibility, but it appears to be in short supply.

lefal junglist platton (wtev), Friday, 21 July 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link

drug addiction/homeless services getting completely annihilated by Tory scum might be much of the real story here, amongst other causes of the squalid diorama you present here, wtev. At this point, I wouldn't want to rule out scrap/bike theft as a future survival strategy myself, so I won't judge!

eight months pass...

So I accepted a job offer in central Manchester a couple months ago, and I'm moving to Altrincham at the end of this month. Short of annual visits to family I don't actually know the place that well so looking forward to investigating the recommendations above (in particular a HOME membership seems ideal and the Armenian Taverna sound delish).

Also set on joining the Manchester & Salford Film Society and going to more gigs (excited because this is a massive improvement on the Edinburgh scene and saves me heading to Glasgow every week).

Can you guys recommend any interesting book shops (first or second hand) to explore?

I'm Finn thanks, don't mention it (fionnland), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 13:27 (six years ago) link

Altrincham food market is great, a real place to hang out. Chorlton Oxfam bookshop is up there with the very best Oxfam bookshops IMO. HOME is indeed a must.

Paramount books in Shudehill is always worth a visit

why tf would anyone leave scotland for england rn

imago, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 13:47 (six years ago) link

Sweet, thanks for the recommendations.

Imago, well it's a combination of the fact that right now it's convenient for me to be closer to my family and I've hit a wall in terms of progression/enjoyment at my current job. Oh and I really love rain. But thanks for your concern.

(xp) It's a longstanding tradition. Gives folk singers something to sing about.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 14:34 (six years ago) link

Altrincham is where Cheshire starts imo, things start getting posh v quickly around Hale. V good for cycling about

ogmor, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 14:34 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I will be taking my bike with me. Is Bridgewater Way safe enough for cycling down at night?

manchester feels like england's glasgow to me

star wars ep viii: the bay of porgs (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 14:41 (six years ago) link

the canal is pretty quiet even in the day, so I do feel wary at night but my difficulties have been limited to a group of kids going BOO at me as I squeeze in between them and the canal. the main problem is all the furious, suicidal geese round trafford park

ogmor, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 14:55 (six years ago) link

and yeah manchester and glasgow definitely seem more akin to me than they do to a lot of nearer places

ogmor, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 14:56 (six years ago) link

Liverpool is a better Glasgow analogue than MCR IMO

Thomas NAGL (Neil S), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 15:05 (six years ago) link

I thought about that, port cities, even accent, but liverpool is just liverpool

ogmor, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 15:07 (six years ago) link

Yes, definitely Manchester.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 15:08 (six years ago) link

Liverpool seems too small for a start.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 15:09 (six years ago) link

on the perils of manchester cycling: i've heard a few people say cyclists have been mugged on the fallowfield 'loop' (not a loop). that's probably my fav bit of cycling round manchester though and i've never had any problems

ogmor, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 15:14 (six years ago) link

Manchester has no real river whereas the rivers in Liverpool and Glasgow are integral features. I think Glasgow also has that "place apart" feel like Liverpool, but maybe not to the same extent. I know Liverpool much less well than the other two cities, though.

Thomas NAGL (Neil S), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 15:20 (six years ago) link

What all three have got in common is Catholics. I don't think Glasgow is a place apart from the towns around, tbh.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 15:25 (six years ago) link

true and true

Thomas NAGL (Neil S), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 15:26 (six years ago) link

The BW canal is a pain for cycling, bumpy, narrow, not very well lit. Fisherman with their goddam poles blocking the way.

If you're working in central manchester then foodwise you wanna try Lunya and Evuna (spanish) and Bakchich (lebanese)

Never changed username before (cardamon), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 19:38 (six years ago) link

can't believe you've erased manchester's only catalan deli/restaurant (lunya) like that. the third part of the mcr tapas holy trinity (& my fav) is el rincon.

ogmor, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 20:03 (six years ago) link

oh no yes, you're right. there's more to lunya than 'spanish' obvs. in partic the smoked sardines from the deli.

el rincon is also great. i can't go there any more because of knowing too many people that work there. whizzed on my chips.

Have a bit of a fondness for Altrincham - my gran lived on Oldfield Brow and worked at the Linotype from 15-60 - though it has changed a lot recently. I like the food hall but it gets rammed.

Tony Naylor at the Guardian seems to be a fan of the food (I guess he lives there or thereabouts) so might be worth following on Twitter.

djh, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link

lunya serve a famous tapas delicacy - crisps on a plate next to some anchovies. as catalan exports go it's up there w guardiola and the statues of people having festive shits
