eugenics

Eugenics were very common in nations that were heading to socialism in the 1930s (Canada and Sweden ) . Those that were viewed as retarded were sterilized because they were too stupid to have Children. This happened to 1000s often because of mental illness unrealted to genetics and retardation. As well it was used to keep "hysteric" woman less hysteric.
Does any Utopian System try to destroy those who fail to fit into its utopia ?

IMHO any Utopian project has this danger built into it just by the very nature of it. (Do fleas go to heaven?) Social engineering is either blind-by-design to human behaviour or (more usually) a deliberate attempt to stamp it out. If you want a utopia, unfortunately you need to know where lice come from and how to make an omelette. If that seems harsh, then maybe there should be no more social engineering.

The backdoors eugenics which took place in Sweden appalling (NB - Backdoors Eugenics is easily one of my favourite phrases). In Sweden it was not just an upshot of socialism, it was a very real form of ethnic cleansing too - and the mere fact that sterilisation occurred as government policy and without the knowledge or consent of those taking part is the greatest crime of the Swedish nation.

Yeah Canada got there early, unlike say, the US, who learned their eugenics off the Nazis and were still practising in the 70s.

Depends upon how we concieve of "Utopia" and "social engineering," Dave -- I mean, one could theoretically support socially steering a nation toward an ideal that involved the basic rights and liberties of all people, including "less-than-ideal" ones, etc. The trick, in fact, is to let go of the assumption that any world with certain types of people in it is automatically less-than-Utopian.

The argument becomes semantic beyond that point, but I imagine you see what I mean. And yes, it's problematic when social engineering enters the biological realm; it really is an ideal that works only in limited economic senses.

As you can see, the latter portion of that post was really important.

End!

But w. Utopian systems is the urge to make imporvemnes be limited ? It seems that they have all these neat ideas about x and then when the ideas work for one narrow circumstance the ytry to smother everything in it ?

A utopia wouldn't last more than a minute before someone decided it was a bit boring, probably that person would be Dave Q :)

Yea, a utopia would not be diverse in any way. It would be sterile and constant, no questions. I just can't ever see it working.

nineteen years pass...

is there any recommended reading about the sordid history of Eugenics around the globe, and religion's role in rebelling against the idea of eugenics (i.e. forced sterilizations) and the prevailing scientific consensus of the time?

I've been suggested this as a video from an American perspective, but I know it stretched well beyond our borders: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/0RIEQ8M91S92YINO5UQDYSFH9W/ref=share_ios_movie

A weird nexus between 'progressives' trying to create a better world mixing with out-&-out racists/fascists

I'm afraid it's not just history but probably has a real future, i.e. in the realm of designer babies, etc.
