Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

speaking on behalf of all us beer-drinking Slovaks: screw them wine-slurping Czechs and their fancy playwriting presidents and their beautiful cathedral-like cities! up with turnips and melancholia and shaggy eyebrows 4eva!

(actually I'm only 1/8 slovak, with swedish and unspecified yugoslav thrown in on that side, and then half Irish too)

Neudonym, Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

but you know what they say: once you go Slovak, you never gobak

Neudonym, Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to hurt you now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

But Ned, bad puns are the best!

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Helltime Producto is of Czech descent.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Czechs! Vaclav Havel! Joy!

Romanians! Cool language! Joy!

Slovaks! Um, who? ;)

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Where is the hot dude from ER from? I'll take that side.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Neudonym, Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course a slovak has never bounced on me either, for better or worse.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 10 July 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 11 July 2003 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

You're missing out, Martin.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 11 July 2003 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, there isn't that much difference between Czechs and Slovaks: the language is the same, the people are quite alike - the only major difference is that Slovakia's poorer and more rural. I went to Bratislava last winter, and had a great time there. Sure, Bratislava is poorer, shabbier and less illustrious than Prague, but it's also cheaper, cosier and less tourist-ridden.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

the languages are not the same. they are mutually intelligible, but no more 'the same' than swedish and norwegian, for example.

cameron, Friday, 11 July 2003 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"A language is a dialect with an army."

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

My ex's father was a professor of Slovakian studies, despite being a Czech. The authorities either were too ignorant to know the difference, or simply hadn't czeched (thank you very much) properly.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer the Czechs. The Slovaks are more racist towards the gypsies.

fougasse (Jake Proudlock), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I once met a professor of computer studies that was a human.

I think I prefer the czechs.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I once met a professor of computer studies that was a human.

You mean hunan?

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

So you're being racist against the Czechs in return?

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Gypsies stole my robot baby :( :(

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Couldn't say. I'm one or the other. Grandpa was illiterate, and back then it was one country ... we were "Czech" by way of "Czechoslovak."
