Usually elderly relatives who have houses stuffed full of glass cats!

HSA and his mum were sorting out some of his stuff that is still in his flat. He pulled out a particularly ugly vase, still in its box, and asked her "why on earth did you buy this?" She shrugged and said "I didn't someone else gave it to me." He said "For gods sake, throw it out, then." She said "No, I'll keep it, and pass it off as a gift to someone else."

So tat never actually comes from anywhere, it is just endlessly recycled round and around!

I'm ashamed to say that I have received several candidates for a tat prize from Matt's parents. They are lovely people... but really, why would I or anyone on god's earth need a 'travel candle holder' in antique-style silver?

I bought a microscope for £1 at a Brighton car boot sale. It is all scratched, the mechanism is broken and there are no slides. I think this counts.

It would count if it was a ceramic microscope lovingly crafted to commemmorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of penicillin, Marc. Otherwise I'm not sure.

Ware the wedding present tat for tis the worst tat of all. Especially if you have relatives who think you like "ethnic" things. We got an ethnic envelope opener.

Hehe there were two little china monstrosities like that on the landing of our old flats, just outside our door, and we never worked out who they belonged to if anyone. So we never got rid of them, even though I felt physically sick every time I walked past.

The worst piece of tat I ever bought was in a pound shop. There were these horribly caricatured ceramics of minstrels - one with a banjo, one with a mic, a couple of others. They really were horrendous. I picked up the microphone one and was going "Oh my God look at this" to my friend and I dropped it. Its toe fell off so I had to pay for it. I kept it hidden at the back of my sock drawer as a warning not to trifle with pound shops in future.

Generally I have no problem with tat though.

Uh, what precisely IS "tat"? I tried to figure it out from context and came up with "knick-knacks" but when talk of bed clothing came into it I was lost again. To me, "tat" = "tattoo".
