He's inexplicably hot.

He was great in MI:3 (& Jesus' Son), and am looking forward to his funny-book turn in Watchmen.

Excellent in Jesus' Son. Still don't know why he didn't become a Brad Pitt-type star. Just as strange: director Alison Maclean followed up with a mix of shorts, TV, and a documentary, but she's never directed another feature.

Really noticed the music this time around. I think it's the only film I've ever heard "Cowgirl in the Sand" in. (The Strawberry Statement uses "Down by the River.") Also, Barbara Mason's "Yes, I'm Ready," "Hang on Sloopy," a nice Doug Sahm song, and Crudup singing along with Joe Tex's "The Love You Save" (he's great, regardless of what the female barfly says). Tommy Roe's "Sweet Pea" isn't much, but it gets a lot better with Samantha Morton dancing to it.

Even Denis Leary's good.

I tend to think he didn't want it? He had it for a while: looks, talent, and my fervent affection.

Must be. I remember he got good notices for his next film, Waking the Dead (never saw it), and even better for Almost Famous. (Even if you didn't like the film, I don't think anyone would blame him.) After that, mostly supporting roles. I don't think I even realized it was him in Public Enemies and Too Big to Fail until the credits.

by far the best actor in Public Enemies. Also, in common with many stage actors he was blank as a protagonist, used to good effect in Prefontaine and Jesus' Son.

Iirc Walking the Dead is a massive tearjerker. Great in Pre and Jesus. Wasn't he in Watchmen?

Didn't know a thing about The Stanford Prison Experiment until five minutes ago (movie or source material). I'm going to try to see it this weekend--hope it's not overly brutal.

Didn't know a thing about The Stanford Prison Experiment

Wow, really? It's sort of a socio-psych-cultural touchstone. Worth reading up. Still surrounded by controversy.

Finally watched Stanford. Well done, Crudup good as always, but kind of redundant? Even without knowing much of anything about the source material (^^: never took the time to read up), felt like I knew what was going to happen every step of the way. And I was puzzled for the same reason any non-psychologist might be: why don't you just leave? I mean, I understand the Stockholm-Syndrome dynamic at work, and understand they wanted to get paid, but still somewhat perplexing. The very last line...made it feel like a Trump film.

Joe Reid and Chris Feil devoted an episode of their podcast to Stage Beauty, a second-tier Shakespeare in Love but with the bisexuality front and center. Crudup and Ben Chaplin are hot together. Crudup never more beautiful.
