^^ that escalated quickly... Ding sunk like a stone. Zhou did too, but you can forgive the young lad. Missed the respot!

I like Ali Carter though, he's in good form. Shame Bingham seems unable to rough up Higgins.

I'll be going to my very first live snooker tournament in November, in Coventry. As a spectator, not a player :) Am already trying to think of what shirt to wear to that televised event. I do know this: it will not be that 'Neanderthal morphs into snooker player' one that's all over the screen this tournament. Nor will it be 'Keep calm and watch snooker', ugh. Recommendations are welcome though.

Ding, choking? Never

Ikr? He wasn't even awful awful, just... choking's the word.

My analysis of why Kyren the Warrior will never be the best: he often lands too straight on a pot when he should err in the other direction. This means he is often forcing angles or really deep screws and ultimately breaking down. A bad angle is always better than no angle.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 10:55 (five years ago) link

Sadly can't watch this now, stuck at work. Gilbert had some crazy good pots last night.

Kyren has the most melancholy expression of the bunch. Even when he's winning his face is just stuck in this 'nothing matters we're all gonna die' despair.

make your own shirt! (I don't know, think of something. "Snooker? I don't even know her!")

lol, I might!

time to get rid of that shouty guy on the BBC though (WHERE'S THE CUE BALL GOING? (nowhere near the pocket, shut up) - RIGHT IN THE HEART OF THE POCKET! (no it wasnt, shut up))

JV has memes himself to death with that shit.

Higgins is all time third in ranking titles, centuries and maximums. Imagine if he didn't throw games for Russian money.

not all Trumps can be the best in the world

StanM, Saturday, 4 May 2019 20:51 (four years ago) link

Worst possible outcome of the two semis. But yeah it will have to be Trump now. Dull as ditch water but eh.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 5 May 2019 10:07 (four years ago) link

In the past, Higgins being a mad keen Celtic fan might have prompted me to support him, not now though.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Sunday, 5 May 2019 10:28 (four years ago) link

gilbert higgins semi was tense but higgins was fairly clinical in the last session. gilbert had a chance in the last but must be tough to clutch it out at that level w/out experience

||||||||, Sunday, 5 May 2019 10:41 (four years ago) link

Probably the worst final line-up ever. I don't want anyone to win but I reckon it will be Trump, although I probably want the cheating Scot. He was a really great player, once.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 5 May 2019 10:49 (four years ago) link

is trump an arsehole or just a boring bastard? don't know much about him

||||||||, Sunday, 5 May 2019 10:56 (four years ago) link

imago, Sunday, 5 May 2019 11:09 (four years ago) link

I kind of think that there are levels of cheating: throwing matches for money is vv bad obv, but he's not getting to 3 consecutive world championship finals by cheating, is he?

StanM, Sunday, 5 May 2019 11:12 (four years ago) link

i was uncharacteristically hating on his opponent just then!

higgins, i reckon, does disproportionately well in long matches, because he is a gritty fucker

imago, Sunday, 5 May 2019 11:25 (four years ago) link

Nobody cares about Trump's lack of charisma - when he arrived he was just a really heavy scorer with a lot of flair at times, but crucially he had no safety game and little maturity. Its why he has never won this.

Higgins is a top 5 all-time match player. He can beat Trump because of the way he plays disrupts the flow of Trump's game. It is going to be a fucking test to see where Trump's game is really at. The only thing is Higgins has had a terrible season so Trump might get away with it, the examination of his game may not be as severe.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 5 May 2019 12:25 (four years ago) link

'Terrible season' doesn't really say anything, just like 'had a great season' saw most of those bow out early. Agree Higgins is one of the best at sinking his teeth into a game and not letting go.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 5 May 2019 12:28 (four years ago) link

Sometimes you can win the WC by not having that much form going into it but usually you win a title or two or you bring in a strong record, especially these days with so many more tournaments.

Higgins made a lot of errors in his SF. He will need to be a lot of sharper.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 5 May 2019 12:32 (four years ago) link

Didn't take long to get so sick of John fucking Virgo that I had to turn it off. He's beyond parody with his barfing of 'ONE UP! ONE UP!' Total embarrassment.

Decided to support the only actual human being in this final after all. Give me a cheating cunt over Trumpbot any day of the week.

I was just taking an easy cheap shot. He's shown repeatedly he has the game and the temperament to beat and be the very best but he'll ultimately end his career a bit Andy Murray to O'Sullivan's and Hendry's Nadal/Federer. Is that because he lacked drive or because he took bribes?

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Sunday, 5 May 2019 15:45 (four years ago) link

Higgins winning this year will tie him with O'Sullivan..

||||||||, Sunday, 5 May 2019 21:35 (four years ago) link

he's probably just tired this time

StanM, Sunday, 5 May 2019 21:38 (four years ago) link

Does look that way: although I want Higgins to start grinding away, get Trump into an hour's worth of scrap and get his rhythm off, really test him out.

I don't believe he is enough of a safety/tactical player even now but you only meet who is put in front of you and at the place where they are at. In frame 2 or 3 he got two snookers out of Trump and nearly stole it.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 6 May 2019 10:17 (four years ago) link

Higgins was very near a 147 with an incredible double to pot the last red

xyzzzz__, Monday, 6 May 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link

Terrific yellow under pressure from Trump, and he goes on to a century: 13-7

xyzzzz__, Monday, 6 May 2019 13:59 (four years ago) link

Terrific shot with his right hand to keep that break going

xyzzzz__, Monday, 6 May 2019 14:02 (four years ago) link

Sheesh, this could be over with a session to spare (which would mean no live snooker for me after work). Last time that happened was Hendry-White (18-5) in '93.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 6 May 2019 14:16 (four years ago) link

Imagine having to take two weeks off to see the final of 1952, which ended in 94-49 o_O

Lindrum and McConachy met in the 145-frame match.[8] The score was 6–6 after the first day[8] but Lindrum pulled ahead, leading 14–10 after the second day and[9] 22–14 after three days.[10] The 12 frames were shared on day 4 but Lindrum still led 28–20,[11] extending his lead to 38–22 after day 5.[12] Lindrum led 44–28 after the first week after another level day.[13]

Lindrum won eight frames on the second Monday, to lead 52–32[14] and then nine frames on the second Tuesday to leave him 61–35 ahead.[15] After another good day, in which he won 10 frames, Lindrum led 71–37, needing just 2 of the remaining 37 for victory.[16] On the Thursday, Lindrum won the first two frames to reach a winning 73–37 position.[2][17] The remaining 35 "dead" frames were due to be played, although in the end only a total of 143 frames were played, Lindrum winning 94–49.[2] Lindrum became the first non-British player to win the World Championship.[18]
