I agree. especially late at night.

ugh
it tastes like paracetemol

robin (robin), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:19 (sixteen years ago) link

what is paracetemol? I know it only from the line "on the elevator... you shit paracetemol " from suede

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:25 (sixteen years ago) link

No mixer nothing. Soda, and plenty of it. Plus a big thick wedge of orange. It helps if you're in the slaughtered lamb at the time.

paracetamol = acetaminophen

Good things to do with campari

With Ice and soda water

Spriss: White wine or prosecco, ice, campari and soda water. (the national drink of the veneto)

Negroni: Gin, Campari, Vermouth, Soda Water.

Aperitivo Florian: Gin, Dry Vermouth, Campari, Dash orange liquer, orange peel

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 05:39 (sixteen years ago) link

campari = pelligrino bitter with alcohol. ed's right - i enjoy a negroni in the summertime.

j.a.e., Wednesday, 23 April 2003 06:18 (sixteen years ago) link

paracetamol = acetaminophen

Arent generic drug names fairly universal? I'm very very suprised to hear "what is paracetamol" and I've not heard it called acetaminophen before. I mean everyone has tylenol/panadol/etc dont they?

Or have I missed something here... wouldn't suprise me!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 06:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Paracetamol is a term not used in the US but Acetaminophen is

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 06:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Campari also complements the decor in our flat.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 07:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Campari and orange juice. Yeah.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 07:29 (sixteen years ago) link

mmmn, a campari with white wine and soda at about 4.30pm, on the beach on Lido, after a hard day sunbathing, swimming and reading, with olives. More than made up for the fact that I'd got heat rash cos it was stinking hot.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 07:32 (sixteen years ago) link

ah and those Campari Soda 6-packs that come in those nifty trinagular bottles.. they're great!

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 07:35 (sixteen years ago) link

"Campari Soda 6-packs" I'm unaware of these... yum!

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 07:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Absolutely essential summertime drinking. They're a little hard to come by in the UK but some Italian shops have them.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 07:55 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah I would say that most Italian shops have them. They're pretty easy to find in supermarkets on the continent tho'
only dud is that the bottles are definitely too small (when poured they only fill like half of a normal glass)

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 08:13 (sixteen years ago) link

They were only like 2000 lire a pop in the bar down the road when I livedin Italy. At that price I can afford 2.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 08:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm with Ed and Vicky on this. I should be in Lido in July, Vic, so I'll have one for you :)

I didn't drink them when I was in Italy, though. When wine was 50p a litre, who needed anything else? (answer: I did, desperately, I just didn't know it. Tavernello, ugh.)

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 08:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:21 (fifteen years ago) link

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Anna (Anna), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:35 (fifteen years ago) link

it's like pernod in that respect. and coffee.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:36 (fifteen years ago) link

It's very pretty, and quite refreshing with soda and a slice. But should only really be drunk when it co-ordinates with one's outfit. Not when it co-ordinates with one's sunburnt nose.

I can sort of see the burnt-rubber thing, though I love Campari. But manhattans? What could be more delicious? Where have you been drinking them?

Camparis should only be drunk whilst wearing linen suits. Me, I am a mojito girl. Barbados rum, brown sugar, crushed ice, muddled mint leaves. None of yer Barcadi flim flammery.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Camparis should only be drunk whilst wearing clothing you don't mind getting slightly reddish vomit on.

I tend to love any bitter liquor, especially when mixed with a sweet liquor, like Cointreau (more Campari than Cointreau, please). Other bitter liquors I should know about?

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 02:56 (twelve years ago) link

NO BARTENDER I've ever asked knows what a sidecar is. "What's in that?" Oh crap, now I have to tell them I don't know what's in one but I saw the recipe in a cocktail book once and it looked good & yummy but fuck if I remember anything, and oh I liked the name...too... "Oh, no worries bartender, I'll just have a ginger ale w/whiskey."

No sloe gin fizzes either. And last time John ordered Chivas on the rocks, he got Sauza tequila. Stupid crappy bars.

Abbott, Friday, 13 July 2007 04:12 (twelve years ago) link

Every bar in SF knows what a sidecar is.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 04:13 (twelve years ago) link

Every Abbott is within 100 miles of bars that are only crappy and know how to mix four kinds of well boozes with coke, tonic, or (if you're in an especially nice one) ginger ale. And they'll usually open your budweiswer for you and sometimes give you fresh glasses, too, if you ask a couple times.

Which is why I drink at home.

Abbott, Friday, 13 July 2007 04:22 (twelve years ago) link

You should move to SF. I'll sponsor you.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 04:45 (twelve years ago) link

Is Campari served in skanky old public houses or only in classy establishments?

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:07 (twelve years ago) link

In the US, both but only on the coasts.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:35 (twelve years ago) link

In Aust? I am looking for a new drink to try tonight.

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:35 (twelve years ago) link

What the fuck is Campari? Pics please.

Bimble, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:37 (twelve years ago) link

I generally have decent luck asking barkeeps what they like to pour. Ask for a drink with campari and see what you get.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:37 (twelve years ago) link

Campari is a red liquor. It's quite bitter, and extremely delicious.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:39 (twelve years ago) link

The staff type of pub I am going to tonight will probably give me a look of "whatthafuk?"

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:40 (twelve years ago) link

It's quite bitter

like Benedictine? That stuff tastes like grass clippings. So I would find it quite different to Malibu & pineapple then?

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:42 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't had either, but I think that if you find bitter tastes appealing, you may like campari.

libcrypt, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:47 (twelve years ago) link

Bitter tastes...so are you supposed to mix it with anything? What would happen if you mixed it with soda water?

Bimble, Friday, 13 July 2007 06:02 (twelve years ago) link

How about cranberry juice?

Bimble, Friday, 13 July 2007 06:02 (twelve years ago) link

mmm Campari on the rocks....the official drink of Team Zissou.

l, Friday, 13 July 2007 07:22 (twelve years ago) link

i always suspected a chinotto/campari connection, but now it's confirmed

"The chinotto is a small bitter citrus fruit from the chinotto, or "myrtle-leaved orange" tree (Citrus aurantium var. myrtifolia). The tree grows to a height of 3m and can be found in Liguria, Tuscany, Sicily and Calabria regions of Italy. The chinotto is an essential flavor component of most Italian bitter amari digestifs, and of the popular Campari liqueur."

how did you have it? just with soda?

just sayin, Thursday, 17 October 2013 18:29 (five years ago) link

soda, large wedge of orange

was seriously difficult to finish it. does a negroni take the edge off?

cozen, Thursday, 17 October 2013 19:03 (five years ago) link

yeah, it has sweet vermouth in it which balances the bitterness.

just sayin, Thursday, 17 October 2013 19:10 (five years ago) link

if you're not in the mood for the full hit of a negroni you can make a campari americano - a negroni but with soda water in place of gin.

i find campari often tastes a little too much like marmalade for me these days, though i still drink it on the regular (i'm drinking a campari-soda right now!)

can't imagine finding it bitter, unless you also find marmalade bitter.

Well, I mean, it's bitter - it's an amaro! - but it's... sweet-bitter. (one of my housemates once said he found it too sweet and syrupy, like cough medicine, which i didn't really understand)

I keep meaning to branch out into the other amari - amaro ramazotti, say, or that one that's made from artichokes or something.

i was going to post the video for Jennifer Hudson's "Spotlight" where she bails on her possessive boyfriend and goes to a club where they ONLY SERVE CAMPARI, but the edit on Vevo has significantly fewer shots of red glasses and campari bottles.

that shit is nasty.
