Saw a big exhibit on the Aktionists last year at the MUMEK in Vienna, and I was slightly repelled but mostly very amused.

Vienna Actionism = completely rendered irrelevant and obsolete by Tom Green, CKY and Jackass

Nitsch has almost nothing in common w/ Knoxville, other than a shared love of blood and bile

i have written a long essay calling the recent spate of shock antics on mtv and elswhere "the democrataztion of preformance art", the attempts at specatcle, the use of violence, the ritualazations, grotesquries, and the isolaton of audience are all right in line with the Actionists. miller is quite assute here.

go tom!

Yay Anthony!

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

The music i've heard from 'em is pretty bland and generic, and here i was led to believe it was an unholy union of Beerhall polka and Throbbing Gristlesque electronics. I was most disappointed.

Anthony, you must post said article or a link to it, posthaste!

Hey, i just noticed that Anthony said 'asstute' instead of 'astute', but given that Knoxville was invoked, i'd say it's intentional. You rock!

one year passes...
Anyone see the "Art In the 60s" documentary on BBC2 last night? Along with too much stuff on Yoko and not enough on John Latham, there was film of Nitsch and Muehl actions - tho I'm not convinced they were actually filmed at the Destruction In Art Symposium in London in 1966, as implied. The Muehl stuff was genuinely quite scary and they even had a contemporary interview with the reprehensible old pervert. Anyway, rather daring stuff to be shown on the old Auntie Beeb.

i knew two people at college who talked abt the aktionists all the time. both of them were incredibly sexually repressed in their personal life (or just unlucky, or some combination of the two), and (so i ascertained) made up for it by constantly referencing the most extreme taboo-breaking things they knew of, as though they had become jaded and unimpressed with anything else. does anyone else know people like this? it's an interesting phenomenon.

this has nothing to do with the aktionists really.

nineteen years pass...

And today brings another farewell - to Günter Brus (1938-2024), the last surviving co-founder of Vienna Actionism. I still remember first seeing films of his performance works at @Tate in the early 1980s in free film programmes. A truly inspiring artist pic.twitter.com/zibF298XiI
